1988 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz Convertible by R. Straman. Sapphire Blue Firemist/Blue Leather/White Top. So you think you've seen one of these before? Probably not. Do a Google search...you are unlikely to find any information on these...maybe a photo or two. This car was ordered brand new by a physician through Frederick Cadillac of Seattle. The car was initially sent from the factory to the distributor in Laguna Niguel, CA...just a few miles down the road from the Costa Mesa workshop of Richard Straman. Mr. Straman initially built his reputation by slicing the tops off of priceless Ferrari Daytonas and 4-Cams. By the late 1980's he had a comprehensive portfolio of conversions, including more Ferrari models such as Boxer Targas, Tessarossa Spyders, and 400i's....as well as Camaros/Firebirds, Honda CRX's, Mercedes SEC's, Nissan 300ZX's, and even Rolls-Royce Silver Spirits that were converted from 4-door sedans into 2-door drop-tops! R. Straman today remains the single most prestigious name in the conversion industry. Once the conversion on this car was complete it was sent to the Seattle dealer to be delivered as a new car with a full warranty...and with the full blessing of the Cadillac factory. We have the original Cadillac window sticker showing the Coupe price of nearly $30K. Not included on the sticker is the price of the conversion, which was said to be about $14,000. Loaded with options. They include the Biarritz package with full leather interior, illuminated entry and vanity mirrors, signal seeking AM/FM cassette stereo, special Firemist paint, and the all-important Touring Suspension. Very suitable aftermarket chrome wheels with 17" low-profile tires. This is a two-owner car with 70K original miles. It has always been garaged, and along with the mild climate of the Pacific NW we have a car that is a lovely unrestored survivor. Everything works and the AC blows very cold. No error messages in the computer. The custom vinyl automatic top is still in very good condition. It is fully trimmed with a lovely wool headliner. We have fully serviced the top by installing a new rear window and installing brand-new custom-made hydraulic power cylinders. As you can see from the photos, the top folds very flat and has a nice custom thick padded vinyl cover. There are a couple flaws in the original paint, but you really have to look for them. Factory records state that 121 of these conversions were completed on 1987 and 1988 Eldorados. Former employees of Straman have indicated that this is just not true, as Richard Straman would seriously exaggerate his production figures to make the company look better. Today, Straman authority Robert Witman has identified just THREE OR FOUR OF THESE CARS IN EXISTENCE! He guesses that total production was probably no more than 25. It must also be pointed out that the 1987 conversions were made on the less-desirable 4.1 liter Eldorados without the more attractive tail fins that appeared on these 1988 models along with the new 4.5 liter motor. CarFax also makes mention of this several times. First of all, this is impossible...as the car has a six-digit odometer (see photo) that will only roll over when the car passes one million miles. Also, CarFax expressly states that the notation on this title WAS ISSUED IN ERROR. What likely happened was that the second owner checked the wrong box on the DMV form when he applied for a new title 20 years ago. We are absolutely confident in stating that this car really does have 70K original miles. It is also likely that the new owner will be able to have this notation removed when they apply for a new title in their home state. PLEASE TAKE NOTE: We have identified a few non-functional items. The recline function for the driver's seat-back does not work. All other fore/aft, tilt, and raising/lowering functions do work. We replaced the switch but this did not fix it. Fortunately the seat-back is in a comfortable position. We also replaced the switch on the passenger side and that now works fine. The lumbar switches also do not work. The power antenna does not work but can be raised and lowered manually. This, of course, is only necessary for AM reception. We have identified no other problems.
