We’re relisting this nice Coupe after the flakey high bidder failed to carry through. Folks, please be sure little Jimmy doesn’t have access to your eBay account and can’t place bids for you. I know this would be a really cool first car for sixteen-year-old Suzy Q and I’ll expect you to pay for it if she can’t! OK, enough rant. Here’s the listing again as it appeared last week:
1977 Oldsmobile Toronado Brougham 66,000 Original Miles !! VIN: 3Z57K7M734009 I’m often asked where we find these unique cars. My best "birddog" cruises parking lots of retirement homes, Elks clubs, the V.F.W halls and the back alleys of a well-known Scandinavian neighborhood here in Seattle (Ballard). He can spot a seatbelt slammed in a car door a mile away… He even notices when a vehicle is driving down the road with a turn signal on just a little too long and he positively twitches with glee when he passes a car with metal bumpers. If you’re in the market for a great driving, smoke-free 70’s vintage two-door please give this bone-stock Toronado Brougham your kind attention. You’re also welcome to contact me with questions or to discuss a sale before the end of the Ebay listing. My name is Mark Thompson and I can be reached at 206/914-1173. HISTORY & CONDITION: On September 7, 1977 F.E. Smetheram stopped in at Riach Central Olds here in downtown Seattle. In those days they were the premier Oldsmobile franchise dealership in Washington state (and had just added a second product line: the little-known Honda Civic). Mr. Smetheram had seen advertisements for the new ’77 model Toronado Brougham, in showrooms less than a week, and knew it was just what he wanted! A Detroit-made front wheel drive car was a real rarity back then. GM was the only manufacturer offering them on the Toronado, Cadillac Eldorado or the Buick Riviera; all built on the same basic platform. Just over two hours later Mr. Smetheram drove out with his new fully-loaded ride, considering $10,230.45 a fair price! Music was important to his wife so he insisted the deal include swapping-out the existing AM-FM stereo for an eight track factory model. The Smetheram Family would continue to own the Brougham for more than two decades before turning the car over to a Toronado collector here in the north Puget Sound. All of the original purchase paperwork, the factory window stickers & build sheet, owner’s manual, Olds Maintenance Schedule, on-preference price sheets, Radio guide and other assorted “glovebox candy” will come to you with the title. As detailed on the build sheet and window sticker, this is an absolutely fully-loaded boulevard cruiser. I don’t believe ANY options were missed as the rig moved down the Lansing, Michigan production line. The photos really tell the story of our Toronado today. As detailed to me by the collector (only the second owner) this car has been in western Washington all of its life and driven only 66,079 original miles as shown. I take great pride in the vehicles we sell and feel that you should know as much about them as possible. Accordingly, here’s a list of the good and also things possibly needing attention: All the glass is great. So is the original color-matched padded vinyl roof; no UV-induced “tiger claw” tears or any fading to speak of. The engine compartment is fairly clean and original. Rust? Well, we get very little snow, hence no road salt so it’s rarely a problem on any local vehicles and isn’t an issue here. Climb over, under and throughout and I know you’ll come up smiling! About the only negatives to point out can be seen in the pics – the paint is a bit oxidized so I’d plan on having it buffed out or possibly resprayed. As is very common on GM cars of this vintage, the rear plastic bumper fillers haven’t held up. Not to worry though, I’ve got a new fiberglass set boxed safely in the trunk for you to have installed. All four matched Goodyear Weather Handler touring radials are virtually new with at least 90% remaining tread. One turn of the key and the strong L80 403 cubic-inch V8 fires right up with just a few pumps of the gas pedal when cold. The Turbo-Hydramatic transmission shifts smoothly, just like it should with NO slippage. I freeway cruised at 60 MPH this week and am very appreciative of the power steering. The brakes also feel just fine, with no pulling or binding. It really is a blast to drive and always gets a “thumbs up” everywhere you go! Take another look at my interior shots. You’ll want to be sure and have your best white “Saturday Night Fever” disco suit pressed and ready to go before slipping into the cushy striped velveteen driver’s seat! All the upholstery is remarkably flawless front and back right down to the seat buttons. There are NO cracks in the dash cover. The original headliner and sun visors are about as nice as you’ll find! The color matched original cut-pile carpets are very decent and appear to have always been protected by the factory mat as shown. Both door panels are original and in excellent condition. I’m quite impressed with the condition of the dash gauges, the stereo and all the switches, knobs & sliders too. They still look as clear and bright to me as the day this rig left the plant back in August of 1977! The ashtray’s never been used for anything more than coin storage and even the factory digital clock works great! Both front seats have six-way power but don’t operate correctly now. I can hear the system activate, but get no seat movement. There is no belt on the A/C pump, though it seems to turn OK by hand. Assume at least a recharge is in order. Finally, the gas gauge reads inaccurately. Please BID WITH CONFIDENCE and know that you are purchasing a nice vehicle from a respected Ebay Seller. My main goal is be sure you’re happy with your purchase - and your dealings with me – with the hope that you’ll be back again for another and pass my name & number along to friends as well. Please Note: WE will NEVER, EVER “shill” or falsely "bump-up" an auction (a violation of eBay rules and also Federal Law). Because of the amount of money involved in buying a vehicle, I require that Ebay members with a feedback history of five or fewer transactions call or email before placing a bid. If we don’t have this initial contact, your bid may be cancelled. The phone number to talk directly to me, as outlined above, is 206/914-1173. Please feel free to call any time during the auction. My name is MARK THOMPSON. A Few Additional Terms and Conditions: Please check the photos over closely and call with any questions BEFORE you place a bid! You’re encouraged to inspect the vehicle at our premises on weekdays, so send your representative early to be sure you don't miss this one. We reserve the right to cancel your bid if you have any negative feedback. DEALERS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME TO BID AS WELL! Additionally I reserve the right to end the auction early if the Toronado is no longer for sale or an acceptable offer has been agreed to. A nonrefundable $500 deposit is due within 48 hours of the auction’s end. The balance is due by cash or certified funds within seven days unless prior arrangements have been made with me. Please remember you are bidding to buy and I fully expect the winning bidder to fulfill their Ebay contract! You’re not bidding to hold, inspect or then come test-drive the vehicle later (You’re more than welcome to do this at my Auburn, WA storage facility before the auction ends). If you do decide to have the car shipped home, there are numerous vehicle transport companies to choose from. We ship vehicles regularly and I'd suggest that you get a transport bid from my rep, Janice, at Dependable Auto Shippers (DAS). Phone her directly at (800) 826-1083 ext. 5096. Be sure and give her my ID number, 2362642, so she can pull up our warehouse location for pick-up. Alternatively, you may also want to go to www.U-ship.com. Transporters will bid delivery of the vehicle and you'll be able to choose who you want to use. The zip code for pick-up would be 98002 (Auburn, WA). As always, the shipping of the vehicle and company chosen are the responsibility of the BUYER. The Buyer will be responsible for the licensing requirements in their state of residence. If you live here in Washington State we’ll need to collect the 9.5% sales tax, title preparation, transfer and registration fees (meaning if you’re from out-of-state, I’m NOT collecting any sales tax from you). Because the Toronado is advertised and for sale locally, we reserve the right to cancel this auction early if it’s no longer available for sale online.
