Vehicle Detail
Running and driving Mercedes 350SL roadster convertible and coupe with the hardtop. California car all its life after being imported from Germany this roadster starts up immediately at first try and runs pretty well. Electric windows go up and down as they should and surprisingly so does the power antenna. Interior and door panels held up pretty well for the age. Seats seem to have the original German vinyl with some scratches but no rips, door panels look very decent though just a bit undone on the bottom part. The dash has the usual sun cracks a very common thing, this car had a beige fabric dash cover which I removed and put in the trunk area. The sun visors are missing altogether somebody actually saw them off...what a pity! Sun visors clips are easy to break off especially on early 107s and when that happens the visors stay constantly on the way. A new set of clips would have solved the problem although whomever did that felt differently. This car has Zenith wire wheels with forged Mercedes Logo spinners, these wheels are very desirable by some Mercedes collectors, I personally love them on the early 107s or 113 chassis Benz. These wheels are actually pretty wide and fill up that ugly gap that is between the rear fender and the wheel when original wheels are on. This car has never been involved into any accidents, the body is super straight. The rare grey/cognac color combination, the condition of the body, the original California blue/yellow plates were things extremely appealing to me when I first saw and eventuallypuchased this car. Like every car that I decide to keep I always take off the windshield wipers just because I do not drive the cars the I collect under the rain. I placed the winshield wipers including the arms in the trunk area. These can be easily put back, the winshield wipers nipples are covered with perfect fit rubber caps. I am pretty reluctant to sell this car since I have been waiting to run into a very straight 350SL for a long time but by using the buy it now option I will include a brand new exhaust pipe and muffler, another very good original copper radiator, the original soft top and frame which is does have a few rips but it's still very solid. I will include these items only if the car will be purchased for the asking buy it now price. This would have been a rust free car though the passenger side floor pan would need to be replaced. This is a very common area where early 107 develop heavy rust and this car nonetheless has suffered it. Another common area is the trunk compartment right side area, a rectangular portion of the trunk that luckily is extremely solid on this car. With the exception of the passenger side floor pan this Benz is extremely solid. I personally hate rust with passion so I make sure I go throughout the entire car in order to find hidden places. Any rusted area I find, I scrap it and with a rubber mallet separating the corroded area in order to discern the extent of rust damage. Under my ownership I performed an oil change (Castrol 20/50) new spark plugs, a much healthier battery, replaced the soft top with a much newer rip less one. This 350SL starts right up and after a 10 minutes warming time the engine pulls beautifully with impressive take off. The engine does take awhile to warm up and during that time the idles might go up and down for about 5/7 minutes until it regulates itself. The brake pad light is constantly on although spending some time pumping on the brake pedal make that light go away. Regular air works fine although A/C does not. I do not know if it needs a recharge or if it has a bad compressor. Rare Mercedes 107 chassis first year of a very successful Benz line that lasted for almost 2 decades. Although production of these cars started in mid 1971 the 350SL came to the USA in 72 and this car is one of them. This specific roadster was made May of 1972. This is an original Blue & Yellow (Front and Back) plated California car. I purchased this 350SL from a close friend of the original owner who purchased the car for her 18 year old daughter. The young girl deiced that this Benz was to complicated to drive so I purchased the car, parked it inside my warehouse waiting to be restored. As a hobby I have dealt in Mercedes 107s for several years. I have purchased over 50 of them and personally owned a dozen though I always wanted the first year production 350SL for many reasons. I was told that all yearly 350SL were hand built I wanted a European Bumper car from birth I love the triangular front turn signal lights The 4.5 liter engine on the early 350SL is supposed to be the fastest of the entire line ENGINE RUNNING VIDEO CLIP: http://youtu.be/w4aYi6azEmk POWER WINDOWS & ANTENNA VIDEO CLIP: http://youtu.be/2FzWub739qE I have a clear California title in hand and I have shipped and can assist shipping should this car go overseas. I do have a video of this car in running mode and a video of the power windows and power antenna in perfectly working order. This is the perfect candidate for a restoration project that can be driven while being restored. I will post the videos asap. I will add more pictures is necessary and or info. This Mercedes 350SL is located inside my warehouse so I can take more pictures in detailed areas if requested. Local inspection is very welcome.
