Vehicle Detail
1955 CHEVROLET RARE SERIES 1 3600 PICKUP ¾ TON I have a clear title on this survivor Taskmaster Truck. This was a registered running Chevrolet 3600 Series 1 truck in Wyoming until a couple of years ago when the owner passed away. I just bought it from a friend to help him out because he didn’t want to mess with figuring out how to do it on ebay. Now it can be yours to restore or part out. As best as I can tell the 1955 Series 1 models were produced from late 1954 to early 1955, and then the Series 2 model was produced the later half of 1955. I understand that some of the 1954 and eariler models have similar parts, so you may be able to find similar parts from other vehicles in those years. It looks to be a fairly solid in the motor and drive line, and the main part of the box and cab, but does have some rust in various places. The fuel tank is behind the seat. There is a homemade tool / carrying box in the bed of the truck (bolted on) with an air bottle that is hooked to the owner-installed air horn (see engine pictures). This truck had a motor rebuild of some kind back in the late 1990’s. I’ve included pictures of receipts found in the glove box. Looks like a nice rebuild using the 261 cubic inch block, machine work done to the head with all new parts, new clutch and re-surfaced flywheel. This work appears to have been done around 56,000 miles, and the truck now shows 80,292 on the odometer. The gauge cluster is in very good condition, and the dash seems to be in fairly good condition as well. The clutch works and engages, and the transmission appears to hit all gears (1st, 2nd, 3rd, Reverse). The engine turns over by hand, and appears to have good compression. The generator also spins freely as does the water pump. I believe the 2 chrome canisters near the carburetor (see pictures) are oil filters. There is a chrome velocity stack air filter on it now, but I also have a new chrome stock-looking air cleaner and filter for it. The battery appears to be fairly new. It still has liquid in all cells, no apparent leaks, but I do not have a 6-volt charger to be able to test it. There are several sets of numbers on the engine, so I’ll do the best I can to convey them. Head numbers are 3835913 GM18 on the driver side near the valve cover, and passenger side numbers are B28 913 241 570 (see picture). Intake manifold number is 3836922 GM. I don’t see a number on the carburetor, but I’m probably missing it. It is marked ROCHESTER GM on one side, and is a single barrel carburetor with a Carter in-line fuel filter. Based on some maintenance receipts found with the vehicle, and my own research, the engine block appears to be one of the harder to find 261 cubic inch inline 6-cylinders. The maintenance receipts seem to support the shop work done on a 261 block. I wouldn’t swear to it being a 261, but you can see the pictures for the 2 “captains bars” on the side of the block above the starter that seem to reference the 261 CID motor. There is probably more on the driver side hidden under the build-up of dirt and grease, and there are definitely more numbers behind the starter that I’m trying to uncover. http://www.oldchevytrucks.com/blog/index.php/2010/02/the-forgotten-261-6-cylinder-engine/ There are 2 blocks under each leaf spring which appear to be a lift kit (4 inches in total) in order to support the larger than stock tires and aftermarket wheels. The rest of the drive line appears to be stock. The tires hold air, but the sidewalls are all cracked. The driver and passenger side door windows and windshield are cracked, but the back windows and triangle windows are all good. I’ll try to answer any questions as best I can, and I can send additional pictures of anything you need. Just ask. PAYMENT: PAYPAL or CASH in PERSON if you live locally or come and pick it up. SHIPPING: BUYER IS RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL SHIPPING CHARGES AND ARRANGEMENTS. I don’t mind helping load it on a trailer picking it up at my house. On Jan-20-13 at 15:46:27 PST, seller added the following information: IT RUNS! - JANUARY 20TH, 2013 - IT RUNS, IT RUNS, IT RUNS - AND ACTUALLY SOUNDS PRETTY DARN GOOD. I BOUGHT A BRAND NEW BATTERY FOR THIS BABY, FILLED THE CARB FLOAT BOWL WITH SOME GAS, AND IT FIRED UP ALMOST RIGHT AWAY. THE FUEL LINE IS EITHER CLOGGED OR PUMP NOT WORKING SO THE CARB WASN'T GETTING GAS THROUGH THE LINE, BUT IT RAN FOR 20 SECONDS OR SO - SEVERAL TIMES - IF I FILLED THE FLOAT BOWL AND GAVE HER A SHOT OF ETHER. IT RUNS! I thought I posted the VIN, but it is actually the Serial Number off the tag that is on the driver side door jamb. The VIN on the actual title is 0117284F55UA. On Jan-21-13 at 10:02:07 PST, seller added the following information: ADDITIONAL NUMBERS FROM THE TRUCK: The transmission appears to be a 4-speed plus reverse (over towards driver and then back/down reverse), and then standard "H" pattern 1st through 4th gears. C0N5 8 GM H310 591907 ENGINE: It does have the additional "Captains Bars" under the intake manifold on the driver side - further indication of the 261 cubic inch motor. Additional numbers of block: (above starter) 1st is either a G or a Zero - too hard to see without pulling the starter, so it's either G0N4 J124 or 00N4 J124 and then a pad a bit more towards the front of the motor reading 0063I 46F55N. REAR DIFFERENTIAL: 8699535 are the only number I find on the drivers side facing front. BRAKES: I bled the brakes and put some fluid in the master cylinder. The brakes seems to work just fine, but could probably use a more thorough bleeding or cleaning.
