The 225hp V-8 was replaced with a 302 cubic inch engine that was rated at 230hp. 1968 was the only year the J-code Mustangs were available. J was the engine code indicating the new 302-cubic-inch engine under the hood. They were the only 302-ci, 4-barrel, 230 HP available that year.J-code Mustangs with the GT option had a 9-inch rear differential. Other Mustangs with the 9-inch were the 390 and 428CJ. The current theory is that "regular "J" code cars, with either automatic or standard transmission, are equipped with a 3:00 8 inch axle and if the "J" code 68 options included the GT package it has a 3:25 ratio axle which is of the nine inch variety. .The 1968 Ford Mustang used the same body style as the previous year with minor trim changes. The Mustang emblem was in the middle of the grille with no horizontal or vertical bars attached to the emblem. The air scoop on the side had a cleaner look to it due to the absence of the horizontal stripes. The 1968 Mustang was little changed from it 67 counterpart. Most of the changes were in subtle refinements to the interior and exterior. New options for 68 included an AM/FM stereo radio, rear window defogger (coupe and fastback only), re-designed front power disc brakes, and the all new 302 cid engine.Other changes included the deletion of the F-O-R-D letters at the front of the hood, simplication of the quarter panel ornament, and many other safety features.Due to increasing governmental regulations, the 1968 Mustang now included front and rear side marker lights, folding, flush mounted interior door pulls, and an energy absorbing steering column.
