Vehicle Detail
Vehicle Description: Up for sale is my Guards Red 1986 Porsche 911 Targa with 3.2L H6 5 speed transmission and 178k miles. I bought it about 4 years ago on Ebay and have refinished the interior and made numerous upgrades. It shows very well and gets looks and comments whenever I drive it. This is the most desirable body style and most desirable color and has been steadily increasing in value. The interior is all new with custom red and black vented leather seats with seat heaters, new steering wheel, RS style door panels, aluminum shifter knob, leather shifter boot, new carpet, dash cap, and stereo. I still have the original tan interior door panels and steering wheel if you want them. I pulled all of the carpet out and the floor panels are all solid with no rust at all. I painted the panels before I put the new carpet in. I replaced the catalytic converter (still have the original cat) with a track pipe and got more power out of the engine. My neighbor had a 1990 911 3.6 SC and this 3.2 would smoke it. I replaced the shifter and other bushings that commonly wear and it shifts smooth considering the age but is not perfect. Sometimes I need to double clutch to put into first. The engine is strong and has always started right up and ran well. At some point it will need to be rebuilt but it is not smoking (a puff on startup), not burning oil, not leaking (maybe drop a week/month – I have it in my garage without a pan), and running great so it is not necessary. I have not cleaned the engine in over a year and you can see by the picture that it is pretty clean and dry. The paint is overall good. I think it is a mix of original and new because I can see signs of repaint before I had the car. There is no evidence of rust or bodywork that I can find. Clear coat is good and looks perfect from 10’ as you can see in the pics. The car has been driven on the road and does have some rash like you expect and you can see upon close inspection. The paint dinks are what you would expect and I tried to represent them in the photos. The best I can tell you is it looks great but has some surface flaws. The car runs straight and handles well. Clutch is strong and I have not found any issues with handling or performance. This is my first Porsche and I found out quickly why they have the reputation they have – fun to drive and digs into corners. It needs to be driven more that I drive it. The car comes with an RS style tail ($500 value) that needs paining and bolting on. I have other miscel parts like trim parts, fuses, and oil filter that comes with it. These are very tight little cars and have very little room for big sounding audio. With the top off you need some volume so I added a Pioneer CD tuner with Aux port for your iPhone, Infinity speakers, Kenwood tweeters, two slimline powered Boss 10” woofers and an Alpine amp. This produces a very nicely balanced sound without losing the back seat. It has some bass but not a thumper to annoy the neighbors. See pictures. I believe the odo is accurate and it has always worked while I have had the car. These have plastic gears that often wear and quit working but this one is good. The clock works. All gauges work (Oil level gauge works but has an inaccurate reading because of the thermostat being stuck.) I replaced the lights in the gauges where possible. Known Issues: After I bought it I had it checked out and got a list of things that needed attention. I have addressed them all except the following: 1. The AC is not working – the mechanic said the compressor worked but there was a line leak. It has a lot of lines in the AC and I was going to convert it to the new coolant but never took the time. The blowers work but no cold air. Heating works great plus it has seat heaters! With the top off who needs AC. 2. The oil thermostat is stuck. It has two oil thermostats, one behind the right rear wheel and one on the engine. This has no functional consequence that I have found other than the oil level gauge does not read properly. The oil temp and pressure is always good so I have not worried about it. I do have the parts to fix the rear t-stat but never got to it. The engine t-stat is about $150 but kinda hard to get to - its a Porsche! 3. The knob that controls the intermittent wiper speed is not working. 4. The Targa top is not perfect, has a crack in the vinyl but does not leak. 5. Since it is 26 years old there may be other issues but this is what I am aware of and my “to-do” list.
