Vehicle Detail

No this is not my first ad as a new account. Due to a long distance move, the powers that bE messed up my account and I had to start all over again. I have been a member since 2002 and you can search my 100% feedback under 'luvlotus' This is a genuine 1600E ( for Executive) and, as it was only ever produced in its four door body style and right hand drive for the UK market, it is the rarest of the variants in North America and it is possibly the only 1600E in N. America and certainly in Canada. And it is one of only a very few anywhere converted to lhd. The mileage is in kilometres and on the odometer fitted it is 25,908. A spare speedo with the car has 57839 kms so I don't know which is original. Either way it is very low mileage. There's plenty of info on the model online if you search for Cortina 1600E.. This car was imported into Canada via South Africa sometime in the 1970's. I first saw it in 1989 along with 3 Lotuses in a commercial warehouse. It has sat unmoved for the past 25 years and has not seen any cold, damp or sunlight in all that time. It was last licensed for the road and driven in 1987. I had tried numerous times over the years to pry loose an Elan coupe which eventually went back to its original owner after his 'abandonment' of it many years ago. The other 3 cars became available as a result of the building and business being sold recently. The shop was a professional high end body and refinishing business and the owner converted the car to left hand drive with all correct parts from a Mk 2GT. The car has had significant performance upgrading: twin 40DCOE conversion, Speedwell cam, hc pistons, block decked and is estimated at over 10:1 compression. It has Lotus flywheel and distributor. This work was all done before the car was put away and the engine had been run but has few miles on it. The car has Lotus suspension as originally fitted on this model. A Lotus 3.7:1 diff is installed. I have installed a new fuel pump and pressure regulator and the engine is running well. The brakes now have a NOS master cylinder installed and have been bled. The transmission was rebuilt and I have had the the clutch hydraulics out, cleaned and checked them over. The springs and all steering components had all been replaced with new as well as the driveshaft. I have new drag link bushes installed. I have installed an NOS fuse box that came with the car. The body and underside are in amazingly 'rust free' condition. The only body work ever done are small repair pieces above the rear wheel arches. The previous owner was a professional body refinisher. The lhd conversion was well done and no evidence shows the original location of the wipers, steering column, pedal assemblies etc. The car was repainted in its original color but unfortunately the old acrylic enamel has become 'crazed' and has numerous cracks so it will need a repaint. The only areas needing attention are small area at the left front dogleg and the top outer ends of the radiator shroud/crossmember. The body and underside are as 'rust free' as you could ever find. I've been all over the body with a magnet and there is absolutely no filler anywhere. The car has never been in any accidents and is free of any dents or dings. The interior is all original and near immaculate. No rips, tears or worn spots. It looks like the carpeting has been replaced. The instrumentation and dash is all original (as GT) and all the wood interior door trim cappings are in good condition. The rear seat is unique, split with a fold down armrest. All the unique features and parts are intact. The only item missing is the original steering wheel (fitted is a vintage Moto Lita) and there are no seatbelts. Note that I use the term 'new' somewhat loosely as the previous owner went through the car 25 years ago. All the parts originally installed, that make this car unique, are intact and in good condition. So what does it need? A quality paint job would turn it into a show winner but it isn't so bad the way it is for the time being. I have replaced the fuel lines, and fuel filter, the tank will need flushing out. I have had the clutch master and slave off the car, both are working fine and the system has been bled. The wood dash facing needs refinishing. It could use some new rubber side window 'wiper' strips as the original are quite hard, the filler strips in the front and rear screens could be replaced. I expect there will be some rubber parts, hoses etc that will need replacing. The calipers may need a rebuild (kits and pistons are included) and the rear wheel cylinders may need attention. The chrome is all very good, straight bumpers with no dents. The original 'rostyle' wheels are in good condition with the original center caps. The car just hasn't seen the road in so long that there may be some things to go over again. I'm going to be working through the car and attending to all the above, other than painting, as long as the car is in my possession. My experience is Lotus Elan, Mk 1 Cortina and Europa. There is no benchmark as to what should be a selling price for this vehicle, it's a vehicle for the true enthusiast who would like to have something that no one else has, literally. As a project, it's a fantastic unmolested time capsule, 'barn find survivor' that doesn't need a lot to turn it into a beautiful car. I have some photos taken 'as found' and all the outdoor shots are just recently taken after some cleaning in the interior and under the hood. The car is located less than 1 hour east of downtown Toronto. Enquiries welcome, I'll send any photos as requested and third party inspection is welcome also. Pictures don't do the car justice, you will be amazed at how good the condition is. The car is for sale locally and I reserve the right to remove from auction at any time.
