Vehicle Detail

1970 Volkswagen Westfalia Camper VIN: 2302035736 I was still just a little kid in the fall of 1961 and can vividly remember the first time my Dad came home with a VW Microbus. He was an underpaid junior high teacher and needed something with enough seats (and luggage space) to carry all eight members of our family. I know my mother really wanted a nice, big, powerful American station wagon, but that would have stretched their budget way to tight. Over the next two decades Volkswagens were the only vehicles that filled my folk’s carport. I learned to drive in their well-loved (and now highly collectable) ’64 twenty-one window Microbus. Later, as married college students with little kids, VW Transporters served my wife and me very well. We’ve now owned just about every type of Volkswagen over the past forty years, having grown to appreciate their cool Teutonic, no-frills nature. This Westfalia has had only four owners. It was originally sold forty-three years ago this month in Jacksonville, FL by Catlin-Griffin Volkswagen on October 31, 1969. The family loving cared for the camper for 23 years before turning it over to the second owner, who brought it here to Washington State in 1990. They later sold it in late 1999 to a single gentleman living in the small town of Enumclaw. I acquired the rig from him in December, 2004 and it has literally sat in the back of my warehouse for most of the past eight years with only occasional use. I’ve reluctantly concluded that it’s time to pass it along allowing the next caretaker to give it the love and attention it deserves! My name is Mark Thompson and you’re welcome to call me anytime during the auction with questions. My direct number is (206)914-1173 The photos really do tell the rig’s story. It wears decent, though not original, beige and white paint. We’ve made no attempt to update the decent stock engine compartment and the photos clearly show the overall condition. Rust? Well, here in the Pacific Northwest our vehicles hate body rust and we generally see little of it! Yes, we get a bit of drizzly rain, but hardly ever any snow so our winter roads are rarely salted. Last winter we had one minor storm. The local news detailed how the City of Seattle refused to use real sodium-chloride salt as it might pollute the Puget Sound and hurt fish (Nobody told Seattle’s dumb-bunny mayor or other politically-correct officials that it’s a saltwater body to begin with). Anyway, feel free to climb over, under and around this nice vintage Bus - I’m sure you’ll come up smiling! The only real corrosion is found on the floor panel in front of the bucket seats (it’s been there, unchanged, since we bought the vehicle). Mechanically, the bus appears in decent shape. I had the carburetor rebuilt a few months ago and now the engine never fails to start right up with just a few priming pumps of the gas pedal. The four speed transmission shifts as it should and the clutch is strong. I’m driving to my mechanic tomorrow to have the brakes checked over while the auction is in progress and any other immediate needs addressed before handing it over to a new owner. Please take another good look at the interior. The original upholstery on the front seats has been replaced as have the door panels. The rear bench vinyl is still quite serviceable, as is the carpet. I’m quite impressed with the condition of the dash gauges. They’re about as clear and bright as the day this rig left the factory in September, 1969! If you are in the market for a decent, fun Westy Camper that can be driven just as is - please give this car your attention! About the only real negative I can think to point our is the need for new pop-top canvas. What’s there is worn with a few holes. I’ll include a new gasket seal tucked away in the storage closet, ready for installation when you do get around to it and copies of all the labor & parts receipts I’ve accumulated over the years. The original owners manual and dealer service booklet will be in the glove box. Special Note: We will NEVER, EVER “shill” or falsely "bump-up" an auction (a violation of eBay rules and also Federal Law) and we will NEVER solicit a “Second Chance Offer” from ANY Bidder! Because of the amount of money involved in buying a vehicle, we require that new eBay members with a feedback history of five or fewer transactions call or email before placing a bid. If I don’t have this initial contact, your bid may be cancelled. The phone number to talk directly to me, as outlined above, is (206)914-1173. Please feel free to call any time during the auction. My name is Mark Thompson. A Few Additional Terms and Conditions: Please check the photos over closely and call with any questions BEFORE you place a bid! You’re encouraged to inspect the vehicle at our premises on weekdays, so send your representative early to be sure you don't miss this one. We reserve the right to cancel your bid if you have any negative feedback. DEALERS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME TO BID AS WELL! A nonrefundable $500 deposit is due within 48 hours of the auction’s end. Because of the high fees they charge, we accept PAYPAL for the deposit only. The balance is due by cash or certified funds within seven days unless prior arrangements have been made with me. Please remember you are bidding to buy and I fully expect the winning bidder to fulfill their Ebay contract! You’re not bidding to just place a hold to then come inspect or test-drive the Westfalia later (You’re welcome and encouraged to do this before the auction ends). Please BID WITH CONFIDENCE and know that you are purchasing a nice car from a respected Ebay seller. I want you to be happy with your purchase (and with me) and that’s the main goal! Please don’t be upset if I miss a minor flaw or you are required to spend a small amount on an unforeseen problem! No used car is perfect. If you plan to have the VW shipped home, there are numerous vehicle transport companies to choose from. Most of our buyers get several bids from the U-ship.com website. I’d also suggest getting a quote directly from Dependable Auto Shippers (DAS). They're the largest in the business and are Ebay's preferred transporter. Lately there fees have been very competitive. The zip code for pick-up of the vehicle here on my end is 98002. As always, the shipping of the vehicle and company chosen are the responsibility of the BUYER. The bus can be stored free of charge at my location for up to two weeks after the auction ends, assuming full payment has been received. The Buyer will be responsible for the licensing requirements in their state of residence. If you live here in Washington State we’ll need to collect the 9.5% sales tax and registration fees (out-of-staters pay NO fees). Because the VW is advertised and for sale locally, I reserve the right to cancel this auction early if it’s no longer available for sale online. The State of Washington shall have exclusive jurisdiction over all disputes. Venue shall be exclusively in King County. The final contract signed between both buyer and seller shall be binding. The final signed contract and terms thereof shall govern the sale. All disputes arising out of or relating to this auction, any negotiations, the signed agreement, or to the breach, enforcement or interpretation thereof, shall be resolved by binding arbitration in Washington, in accordance with the terms contained in the final sale agreement and under the laws of the State of Washington. Whew! Don’t you just love legalese?
