Vehicle Detail
1956 BMW Isetta Z-mold click pics to see larger ones 1956 BMW Isetta 300 This is the "bubble window" style of Isetta, it preceded the "sliding window" style that most people are more familiar with. This is a US-export market car originally sold new in the USA. The body style changed to the sliding window variant the following year in mid-1957. The beltline trim on all 2-tone Bubble Window Isettas was the "Z-MOLD" This was later dropped for the sliding window model in favor of a simple straight piece. It is sort of the Isetta equivalent of a "go faster stripe". This car has been completely redone inside and out, both mechanically and cosmetically. It starts right up and will go anywhere you may dare to drive it. It is currently titled, licensed and insured in Illinois. Serial #494156, it is a matching numbers car. The expansive wrap-around rear window is tempered glass, not plastic. The side windows are tempered glass as well. The sunroof opens wide letting in plenty of air and sun. You will need it because there are no sliding windows to open! The triangle side windows open but I think they are more for flicking your cigarette ashes out of... Your view is surprisingly unobstructed by any thick pillars or supports. It is almost like being in a convertible. Almost. Your view from the driver's seat. No cupholders But there is an ashtray! This is the chassis after all mechanicals were redone and just before the body was placed back on. The only thing changed now is that the center black shield in the middle of the fan is no longer black, it is silver. The car comes with an original unrestored Jack and Handle as well as an original owner's manual in English. The wheels are all powder coated the proper color and the car rides on 4 new 4.80x10 Bias Ply whitewall tires. A new spare tire is behind the seat. The heater is NOT hooked up as there is no heat exchanger under the seat. This car has been exhibited at the 2009 NY Auto Show were it was seen by hundreds of thousands of people. The car also seems to be quite popular with the show models. The car was on display at the 2010 SEMA Show in Las Vegas where it tried to race a Cheeta for CLEANTOOLS (sponsor). Recently the car was photographed for an upcoming ad campaign that has not yet been launched so I can't say what it is but you might be seeing it on billboards at some point in the future.
