Vehicle Detail
This 1960 RR Silver Cloud II has been restored and is in excellent condition. Purchased 2005, 3rd owner. 82,212 miles Always garaged California "black plate" car personally restored by veteran RR appraiser and master mechanic Rudy Turner. Rudy located this car for me in 2005 following an extensive search and meticulously set about returning it to its original beauty and performance level. This Silver Cloud II looks and drives like a dream and has afforded me many years of motoring pleasure. A picture truly is worth a thousand words: the attached photo gallery reveals the time and effort this widely respected RR craftsman put into restoring an automotive classic that now truly merits the title "Pebble Beach car." Rudy slowly worked his way from bumper to bumper--starting under the "bonnet" by installing new valve seals and brakes, engine mounts, replacing the old radiator and every hose, adding electronic ignition, new Goodrich "Control-Plus" Radial tires for an incredibly smooth ride and an authentic Rolls-Royce exhaust system. No detail, however small, escaped his watchful eye. Even something as minor as a left rear hubcap that was starting to lose its luster had to be returned to a shiny condition by being re-chromed; likewise, accumulated black age flecks on one of the rear compartment's vanity mirrors meant that it had to be replaced. The car's immaculate interior includes original unblemished high gloss burled walnut, camel colored Connolly English leather seats, plush lamb's wool carpeting throughout, and a 1960 headliner which is in pristine condition. All dash instruments work accurately (including a flashing green light which appears when only three imperial gallons of petrol remain in the tank). While the Smith's clock on the dash looks just as it did in when it was installed by Rolls-Royce in 1960, it now keeps perfect time after being rebuilt with an internal quartz mechanism. The car's original air conditioning system supplied A/C only through two vents mounted on either side of the rear parcel tray. Rudy added a more powerful, state-of-the-art supplemental A/C. Together, the two independently operating systems now serve to assure the comfort of both front and rear passengers at all times (as a year round Palm Beach County, Florida, resident, this was more than a little important to me because of our chronic heat and humidity). As the accompanying photos reveal, the retrofitted A/C vents and controls were so skillfully blended into the burled walnut dash that they give the appearance of being original equipment. Ever the perfectionist when it came to restoring what has been widely hailed as "the best motor car in the world" since 1915, Rudy made certain that the even the "torch" located in the "boot" worked and that every tool stored there was in its proper place. He insisted that even the new hand-painted ivory striping conform exactly to the pattern Rolls-Royce had applied when the car was hand-assembled in Crewe, England over a three month period in the Spring of 1960. The car's "build number" (LSTB 142) shown on the front bumper had to be displayed with authentic English license plate lettering and an appropriate frame. Rudy was a stickler even when it came to Rolls-Royce semantics. If a novice RR owner made the mistake of saying "hood" instead of "bonnet," or "windshield" instead of "windscreen," his thick eyebrows would arch disapprovingly. To Rudy, the rare inability to drive a Rolls because of something like a bad battery was simply an "FTP" ("Failure to Proceed"). A "Breakdown" in a well maintained RR was unthinkable to him. I remember when he returned the car to me after its restoration he reminded me that I am only the temporary "custodian" of this Silver Cloud and that someone else will be enjoying it twenty-five--even fifty-- years from now. Sadly, my friend and mentor in all things having to do with Rolls-Royce passed away suddenly this summer. He is missed by Rolls-Royce and Bentley enthusiasts throughout the nation.
