Vehicle Detail
1951? BMW (EMW) R35. 350cc Here we have an interesting motorcycle with a history steeped in the cold war. After WW2 the BMW plant in Eisenach Germany where all BMW R35s were built by wars end was now behind the iron curtain. BMW in the west was prevented from producing motorcycles by the allies so the plant in the East continued to produce motorcycles as BMWs, as in fact they were! Mostly the R35s were built using wartime spare parts that were saved from allied bombing by being stored in underground bunkers. As these parts were used up the East Germans began to manufacture them on their own.In 1952 BMW in the West won a World Court case that restored the name exclusively to them. The eastern BMWs were renamed EMW for Eisenach Motor Works and continued building motorcycles and cars for many years! This bike is among the last of the BMW badged EMWs from the east.It was produced by the factory that would later be called EMW but badged as a BMW as it came from the factory. All markings are BMW.Repeat, these badges and markings are how it came from the factory in 1951.Do your research on the history of EMW and BMW before you bid! This bike does run although it needs the wiring completed. When I got it I hooked a battery up and it started up pretty easily with no strange noises , etc.I rode it around the block a few times then parked it in air conditioned storage. It has not been started in a couple of years but has been turned over regularly since. It needs a battery, the wiring done, and probably a bit of fiddling with but it seems a solid bike and pretty complete. The kick starter is a touch stiff and requires pulling back up with your toe. It would be a good start for a nice restoration or ride as is.It does have new tires that I put on when I first got it The exhaust pipe is a crappy cobbled together thing from the Soviet era. New ones and in fact all parts are easily available from Germany with many , many vendors selling every imaginable part on ebay and elsewhere . Not only that but reasonably priced too! NO TITLE or paperwork with it. I did not see that option on ebay's listing process. NO TITLE!.I can give you a bill of sale. Numbers on frame and engine do not match.I don't know why. The mileage is my best guess as the numbers are illegible and probably wrong. $500 deposit within 24 hours via paypal. Cash on p/u for the rest. Can hold for a bit if you need to arrange shipping. Thanks and good luck!
