She’s always been garaged when not in use but, lately, she’s spent more time parked than she deserves so it’s time for someone else to take the wheel. The Pontiac faithful can tell from my eBay username that I’m a true fan of these cars. I’m also the Webmaster for www.1967gto.com (this is the featured car on the home page) so, as you can imagine, this sale is being made with a very heavy heart. This goat is non-numbers matching but is a bona fide 242 VIN ’67 GTO ragtop. She’s the consummate “20 footer” and was built to cruise! While the paint and chrome still have a nice luster to them, the body and chassis are far from perfect and the original motor and trans are long gone. If you’re searching for a trophy winning parade queen, this isn’t it. However, if you've been looking for a true “driver” you can enjoy right away, your search may be over. I’m starting the bidding below market value with NO RESERVE so even if there’s just one bid, she will be sold! I've included dozens of detailed photos for your reference and review as well as a video of the car cruising down PCH circa Spring 2003 (before the new exhaust was installed). NOTE: For those of you wondering, the California license plate "1967GTO" is real and is registered in my name. I'll be holding onto this plate for future use and it will not be included with the sale. Long story short, winter was coming when this glossy sled crossed his auction block. He was in the process of restoring his first ’67 and, even though the previous ownership history and true mileage of this car was unknown, he ended up bidding on it without hesitation. Unfortunately for him, he made the mistake of not consulting his “finance department” about the purchase. He only had the car a few weeks when his wife told him one of them had to go so she could park her Blazer in the garage. I had the good fortune of being the first one to respond to his newspaper ad. A few phone calls and photo exchanges later, the car was loaded on a carrier making its way to sunny SoCal.When she arrived, I ran all the numbers against the PHS docs I ordered prior to the sale. Starting life in Montego Cream, she was resprayed Starlight Black at some point in her past and a 400ci Pontiac motor (code #YC) out of ’67 B-body (Catalina, Bonneville, etc.) was swapped in and mated to the original TH400. Over the first five years of ownership, I performed a number of upgrades using period correct parts (either NOS/OEM purchased through eBay or repop specialists Ames, OPG, etc.) while judiciously selecting some tasteful mods. In January 2001, I had the Turbo-Hydramatic rebuilt by Foothill Transmission in Pasadena, CA. Next, I gave her a 2” drop using low profile springs from OPG in June 2001 so she could cruise slow and low. Around the same time, I purchased and installed a used set of 14" Rally IIs I picked up at the Pomona Swap Meet as well as an OEM Rally Gauge Cluster I won on eBay. The following February, I had the motor rebuilt by Tom Rice Automotive Machine in Pasadena, CA (.030 over with a fairly mild cam grind). While the engine was out, I performed a tranny swap installing a complete, date correct 4-speed Muncie M20 wide-ratio kit I won on eBay (trans, driveshaft, hump, shifter and console) that was pulled from a ’67 A-Body donor. To complete the vintage look, an OEM Pontiac vacuum gauge that was in a box of old parts which came with the car was mounted to the console. Finally, on August 2, 2003, a Pypes Performance Exhaust 2.5" stainless X-pipe kit with polished tips was installed by Kirk at Advance Muffler & Auto Service in Pasadena, CA.In 2005, I got a job transfer to Connecticut and brought the car with me to enjoy and drive on the weekends. She never saw rain or snow but did many runs down Merritt Parkway as well as through all the gorgeous back roads of Fairfield County. I had good intuition to hang onto my personalized plate as, a year later, I was transferred back to SoCal where she and I have been ever since.I’ve retained every receipt for parts used and work performed along with photos of how the car looked when it originally shipped to me. The original keys, owners manual and Protect-o Plate as well the PHS docs and a gas mileage log I've maintained since August 4, 2005 are also included. MECHANICALS & ELECTRICALAs mentioned, the engine was rebuilt 10 years ago. Though still running on points, she fires up faithfully on the 2nd or 3rd crank from a cold start. Once warmed up, she doesn’t smoke but does have a small oil leak that appears to be coming from the area where the motor and transmission mate up. There's a tad of coolant that seeps from the common weak point in these BOP motors between the top of the timing chain cover and the block. The water pump gasket also has a bit of dampness on top and will eventually need to be replaced. The M20 was inspected on January 17, 2002 before I purchased it and shifts fine through all gears but is probably now in need of a rebuild. During the transmission swap, the cross member mounting points were moved forward using heavy duty brackets bolted to the original TH400 frame tabs and have performed flawlessly. The differential cover leaks a little gear oil and should be looked into. She has four wheel drum brakes which do an okay job slowing things down but she pulls to one side indicating the proportioning valve may need to be replaced. The original convertible top motor gave out in September 2003 and was replaced with a new repop from OPG. Around May 2007, I was having fuel delivery issues so I rebuilt the Quadrajet and installed a new, stainless steel repop, also from OPG. The fuel gauge wasn't working so I tried replacing the sending unit while the tank was out but it still didn't help which leads me to believe the flat ribbon cable running from the front to the back of the car will need to be replaced/repaired. All other gauges work but are definitely in need of recalibration and shouldn't be trusted for accurate readings. The original AM radio still tunes in stations and squawks wonderfully through its monaural speaker. Unfortunately though, the windshield wipers and washer fluid pump don't work and neither does the horn. All interior lights and dash bulbs illuminate as do the headlamps, high beams, driving lights, tail lamps, brake lights and hazard lights. However, only one reverse light appears to be working so I suspect the wiring harness may have a short. Lastly, the 225/70R14 tires are a tad big on the front and rub the inner fender liner on hard turns. I'd suggest going with a set of 205/75R14 BF Goodrich T/A radials for nice look and no rubbing. PAINT, BODY AND CHASSISThe paint shows good and I've kept it waxed and under a car cover in my garage when not in use. For a 45 year old car, the body actually looks fine from afar but there are a number of dings, dents, scratches and other imperfections that become apparent close up; the most evident of which I've included photos of for review. The trunk pan and rear quarters appeared to have been replaced at one point with repop steel panels. There's mild surface rust on the trunk pan from standing water that sat between the mat and the metal. As for the frame, the car was out of NY so it's not without rust conditions. On June 6, 2001, a few months after receiving the car, I had it inspected by Bells & Vaughn in Pasadena, CA. Expecting the worst, they reported the frame was actually fine (inspection sheet included in documents). Recently, however, some surface rust has appeared which I've shown in the photos. There's a large dent in the passenger side rear quarter panel that came about when the previous owner included a spare transmission in the sale (presumably from the same '67 B-Body the engine came from) and improperly stored it in the trunk during transport to me. It came loose, banged around then slipped over and dented the quarter panel from the inside out cracking the paint and also scratching the inside of the deck lid in the process. There's another blemish between the trunk and rear window where a 2x4 accidentally dropped from the rafters in my garage denting and scratching the panel. Both doors sag and are poorly aligned so the hinges are probably in need of replacing. There's also a dent in the front header panel that came courtesy of a rogue shopping cart as well as numerous other battle scars on the doors and fenders from having been driven on SoCal highways and having to coexist in a cramped garage alongside gardening equipment and kiddie bikes. Finally, the floor pans had some surface rust and patch panels welded in so I applied a coat of Por-15 in May '02 to seal everything up.INTERIOR AND TOPBoth the interior and top appear to be original. The Morrokide vinyl upholstery is in very good condition with the exception of a small abrasion on the driver's Strato Bucket seat bottom. There's also a tear in the passenger rear armrest below the ashtray. Speaking of ashtrays, they all appear to have been used and help add to the period aroma. The dash pad has no cracks and the woodgrain applique on the instrument panel and 4-speed console, while faded, provide the correct patina. The Deluxe Steering Wheel has the typical cracks which can be filled and the glove box door and cardboard housing are in good shape. The convertible top, though still nice and taught when in the closed position, is in need of replacement. On the outside, there are several small tears in the vinyl and the rear window is showing its age. On the inside, tears have appeared where the canvas top lining rubs against the top frame hinge points. However, the top bows are in good shape and the entire systen functions as expected with the pump and pistons moving the mechanism in both directions nicely.I've done my best to represent this car as accurately as possible. Please review the photos and ask any questions before bidding. Again, this is a NO RESERVE auction so this GTO will be sold to the highest bidder! A $500 deposit is required within 48 hours of the listing close with full payment required within 7 days of the close. This vehicle is being sold AS IS with NO WARRANTY, NO RETURNS and NO REFUNDS.
