Vehicle Detail
1951 OLDSMOBILE 98 – AN ORIGINAL BLAST FROM THE PAST ROCKET 98 - A WHOLE LOT OF CAR! “Arrive in style, be a star, in your Merry Oldsmobile.” This was the talk back then and it still is today. The very hard to find '51 Olds 98 sedan gets high marks for its ride , agility and comfort. It draws like a magnet, its power is in its ' I haven’t seen one of those in a long, long time. This is a car to drive and enjoy. It is perfectly ready for the open road or city streets. HISTORY OF OLDSMOBILE For most of its life, it was produced by General Motors. The Oldsmobile was founded by Ransom E. Olds in 1897. In its 107 year history, it produced an amazing 35,200,000 motorcars. In 2004 it was the oldest surviving American automobile marque, and one of the oldest in the world. In the 50's, you were the talk of the town when you were able to own an Oldsmobile. There were so many catch phrases attached to these cars including, “Look who just bought an Olds” - “It's a Rocket engine”- “They sure go down the road nice”- “Its a Hydromatic!” The early Oldsmobiles became the top selling car company in the United States for several years. Oldsmobile, not Ford, made the first automobile assembly line. In 1905, a song was written about the curved dash Oldsmobile. It was a hit and titled "IN MY MERRY OLDSMOBILE" In 1910, Olds produced the Limited Touring, riding atop 42" wheels, including factory whites. It was 'the car'. It sold for $ 4,600 which was more than the purchase price of a brand new 3 bedroom house. This rich history goes on and on, just a few more fun facts. In 1937, Oldsmobile was once again the pioneer in introducing a four speed semi-automatic transmission called " Automatic Safety Transmission". Then in 1940,Oldsmobile was the very first manufacturer to offer a fully automatic transmission, called the Hydromatic. Along with the Hydromatic, Olds was once again the pioneer when, for the 1949 model they introduced their Rocket engine. These were powerful engines, and found favor with hot-rodders and stock car racers. THIS HYDROMATIC ROCKET 98 OLSMOBILE This was my surprise car. I knew I had to have it the minute I saw it. The look and the fact that '50's Oldsmobiles are seldom seen. I was told the car had been in storage for many, many years. It ran and sounded so good and shifted just like it should. The ride was just like I remembered from way back when. I had to have it but what I did not know sure hurt my pocketbook. I will detail what was done to the car to make it what it is today. Now, it is a wonderful, fun car ready for a a drive from the past. I would not do anything to this car. In my opinion, nothing needs to be done to it, just drive it like it is. Upon parking it in my car barn, I noticed a small puddle of oil on the pavement. I drove it to our mechanic and told him to check the car over completely and repair the leak. Oh my, here is what was found and what was completely done to certified standards. The receipts go with the car totaling a whopping $3453.62! NEW FUEL PUMP NEW COIL PACK, NEW PLUGS AND COMPLETE TUNE-UPNEW GAS TANK NEW FUEL SENDING UNIT NEW FUEL FILLER HOSENEW FUEL PUMP STRAINER NEW WATER PUMP REMOVE TRANSMISSION AND SEAL PUMP SEAL AND CONVERTER REBUILD CONVERTER REBUILD REGULATOR EXHAUST AND NEW CHROME TIPS REBUILD CARBURETOR AND MANY MORE SERVICE ADJUSTMENTS Too many vintage cars look good, but run and drive with great risk. Not here, just get in and go. We fixed or replaced everything without cutting corners. The fun is in having a dependable 'ready for the road motorcar'; trailer queens are now passe. The flaws, patina and scars of the past are whats in vogue today. Where is the fun in owning something that requires 24 hour surveillance. Motoring from the past is where it's at. Park this car next to a new plastic, computerized box of a car and see who walks away with first prize every time. The engine compartment and engine are clean and very presentable. The original rocket engine sets in place and is ready for action. There is something about the rocket valve covers that excite the imagination. Notice the original window washer bottle is still in place, so is the oil cap, air cleaner, radiator and valve covers. The engine itself performs well at any speed and it goes through the gears just like it should. The interior is original. Notice the cover I put over the front seat bottom. It is all part of this car. I would not change a thing. The tissue dispenser is original and draws so many comments. The steering wheel is in excellent condition and so is the dash. The keys are original. You can even lock the doors on this one. The owners manual is in the glove box. It is very pleasing to the eye and just as exciting to sit and enjoy this blast from the past. The seats are supportive and very comfortable. The back seat is very roomy and feels like a million bucks. If this car could talk.... how many double dates and drive ins were part of its history. Sit in the drivers seat and look up at the sun visor. This is really something. The original printed sleeve showing how to operate the Hydromatic transmission is still there. It has been there for 60 years. Open the trunk and you will find it is all original. It looks like it has carried many suitcases and gear over its long history. It is clean and all original. The exterior is all there. Once again, I will give you my opinion. Nothing needs to be done. This is a great looking motorcar just the way it is. Too often what cannot be seen is just covered up. All that shines is not.! The word restore has lost its validity. Shoddy workmanship, ill fitting panels and doors and a multitude of coverups just do not get it anymore. These panels and doors fit like a glove. An almost silent click will close any of the doors. The car still wears its original fender skirts and they fit just fine. The original wheels covers are on the car and in real good condition. The stainless panels and trim are in very good condition. The rubber seals are in good condition. Please notice there is no rust around the rear window. The period black bottom and yellow top adds so much character. It just looks GOOD! Today people gravitate to all things original. The dents, patina and general aging are all part of a natural attraction. Yesterday becomes alive when natural settings are left intact. Once again, this Olds is ready to relive its past and hit the streets and highways as proudly as it did 60 years ago. Buy with confidence. This is a treasure from the past.
