The Cougar was often advertised & identified as " the sign of the cat." The 1967 Cougar was based on that year's refaced first-generation Mustang, but with a 3-inch-longer (76 mm) wheelbase and new sheet metal. A full-width divided grille with hidden headlamps and vertical bars The Cougar continued to be a Mustang twin for seven years defined the front fascia—it was sometimes called the electric shaver grille. The Mercury Cougar appeared in 1967 as a sport-luxury vehicle. The muscle car era was in full swing and Mercury used a longer version of the Ford Mustang chassis complete with two doors, and V8 engines. The Mercury brought style, sophistication and speed.
