Vehicle Detail
Up for auction is this sharp looking 1952 Henry J. I could write a book about this car because I've had it since 1972 when I was a sophomore in High School and my grandfather and I restored it. He was a Kaiser Dealer back in the '50's and had lots of parts and all the know-how. I drove it as a daily driver for several years and actually took it to a couple of car shows where it did pretty well. The car has always been garaged, but unfortunately for the past ten or twelve years it has not been driven much at all, which is really hard on antique autos. The body is straight, no dents but there are several scratches from bicycles and other garage paraphernalia that tended to get piled on the car. There is a small amount of surface rust on the rear passenger quarter panel and the floorboards have been patched with sheet metal but are still very solid. The rocker panels on Henry's tend to rust badly but we found some galvanized reproductions and used those in the original restore and they are like new. The passenger side window is cracked and the chrome on the front bumper has some surface rust on it. The car is essentially stock except for the paint color. It still has the original 6-volt positive ground system and original drive train with electronic overdrive. I noticed that the generator light was on and the battery was not charging when I got it out to take these photos. I have replaced the voltage regulator a few times over the past several years and it could need that again, but no guarantees on that. The battery itself is only a couple of years old. The clutch was replaced about 10 years ago, but only has maybe 200 miles on it. At the same time I replaced the motor mounts. It has developed an oil leak around the oil pan as the gasket has apparently dried out - a casualty of sitting too long. Also, the fuel in the tank is probably 5 years old and I don't think there was enough fuel stablizer in it as it smelled pretty sour and smoked quite a bit when I started it up. Motor runs great and car shifts perfectly. Brakes are sticky from sitting so long. Tires are like new. The interior is not too bad. I had the speedometer ring re-chromed a few years ago and had the steering wheel re-coated so it looks great. There is carpet with pad in place but it has never been completely trimmed out and finished. The rear seat and door panels have the original upholstery pattern with imitation alligator black trim and the front seat was done entirely in the black alligator pattern so it all matches pretty well. The car is equipped with turn signals, a trunk and a heater plus I do have the original tube radio which does not work but it goes with the car.
