The 335i rips to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds, 0.1 second slower than the current M3's time, and the quarter-mile falls in 13.6 seconds at 105 mph, same as an M3. The difference in styles is that an M3 treats you to a gritty, saber-rattling, drama-filled performance, but this new twin-turbo 335i takes the advice Teddy Roosevelt popularized: Speak softly and carry a big stick.
The big-stick part comes by way of two small turbochargers that seemingly deliver boost right off idle and a direct-fuel-injection system that allows for a high 10.5:1 compression ratio. From behind the wheel, the 335i doesn't have the characteristic lunging feel of turbocharging; instead, it delivers power much like that of BMW's last-generation 4.4-liter V-8. Peak torque of 300 pound-feet arrives
at 1400 rpm and sticks around until 5000 rpm; the delivery feels perfectly linear as the turbos work together to provide uninterrupted power. Unlike the M3 and 330i, the 335i doesn't need to be spun toward the redline to furnish meaningful thrust. There is so much torque available everywhere on the tachometer that running toward the rev limiter is entirely unnecessary -- fun, yes, but unnecessary.
Even at low rpm the engine has ferocious grunt that hurtles the 335i forward. Top-gear acceleration from 30 to 50 mph of 6.5 seconds lops 3.5 seconds off the 330i's time and is 3.2 seconds quicker than the M3's performance. Moving from 50 to 70 mph takes just 6.0 seconds, 3.4 seconds quicker than the 330i could do and nearly a second and a half quicker than the M3's time. The 3-series now has the kind of torque that makes guys with 4.9-liter Mustangs act cocky. (And you thought
3-series owners were already a swaggering lot.)
Fortunately, the rest of the 335i package is genteel enough to keep already-inflated egos in check -- this is the "speak softly" part of the program. It's without question a handsome coupe, but for being as quick as an M3, the comparatively subtle 335i doesn't scream to announce itself as an M3 does.
Two exhaust pipes peer out below the rear bumper; aside from the 335i badging, they're the only tip-off to the turbo under the hood. This coupe version of the latest 3-series is roughly two inches longer and sits nearly two inches lower than the sedan, as if gravity were more attracted to the coupe than the sedan. The optional Sport package fills the fenders with 18-inch wheels shod with run-flat Bridgestone
Potenza RE050As (225/40R-18s in front and 255/35R-18s in back) that stick to the skidpad at 0.87 g, again matching the M3's performance. Even with its firm sport suspension, the 335i remains compliant and manages to avoid the M3's flinty harshness. The yin to the turbochargers' yang are large 13.7-inch brakes up front and 13.2-inch rotors in back that are good for 160-foot stops from 70 mph -- a foot
better than the stopping distance of an M3. Brake feel is progressive, and the 335i comes with BMW's brake-fade compensation that works to maintain constant pedal feel even when the brakes are overheating. After a few hot laps around GingerMan Raceway in western Michigan, the brake pedal remained responsive and off the floor.
