Vehicle Detail
What we have here is a nicely maintained, low mileage roadster that's quick as a jack-rabbit and sticks to the road like velcro. This has been my wife's daily driver for the last four years. She purrs like a kitten and needs absolutely nothing to be enjoyed day in and day out. We wouldn't hesitate to drive it to California and back tomorrow. Today is Sunday and tomorrow I will be bringing it to our shop to have it inspected. Anything it needs it'll get (as always). So the next owner will have free sailing and be able to cruise the beaches or wherever as they please and without worry. That's just how I roll. Here's how she's equipped: 225 hp 1.8l turbo 4-cylinder; about 22 mpg around town, 30+ on the highwayBose stereoClimate control; Works perfectly. We took the car to the Jersey shore a couple of weeks ago when it was pretty stinkin' hot. No worries! Built-in alarm system; Leather interior;Power, windows; mirrors;cruise control;Trip and mileage computer; Quattro all-wheel drive. Nothing like it in the snow, or rain, or dry either. Unlike my Infiniti's AWD, you never know it's working; it's just always 'on'. Quattro is the best all wheel drive system on the planet. Nothing else even comes close.Manual convertible top. Can be put down while seated; takes 5 seconds, really. A guy can put it back up seated, but my wife had to get out of the car because of the awkward reach, so that took her 10 seconds. Nice, simple, nothing to break! Those of you who know these cars also know they can have 'issues'. Not to worry, WE'VE already suffered the two major items so you won't have to. Almost 'on cue', the timing belt tensioner failed at 72k miles as my wife turned the key to start the car, which of course, never happened. And so we wound up having to have the head rebuilt along with getting a new timing belt, water pump, etc. That was a couple of years ago. We brought the car to our shop in West Chester PA who we have trusted to do ANYTHING to ANY of our cars now for the last ten years. They are DARE Automotive who have their own onsite machine shop where they've built winning race car engines over the years, in addition to auto repair. (I once saw a $175k Bentley sitting out front. If people with that kind of money take their cars here, it's good enough for me!!) They handled the job nicely and the car has run perfectly since that major repair. With only 18k miles on the engine since that job the next owner can count on another 65k or so miles before the timing belt becomes due again. Then there's the infamous 'falling-out-back-window' that plagued all the early TT's. After about 6 or 7 years, the back window literally becomes unglued and just falls into the back of the car one day, and no amount of re-gluing will fix them. Audi didn't know how to fix them either and so also refused to stand behind the issue because all the cars were out of warranty (nice)!! Hundreds (thousands?) of TT owners have complained about it online. Anyway, this car has a brand new convertible top just installed last year by 'Mickey' of M&A upholstery, also in West Chester. It's absolutely beautiful and is better than Audi's own replacements (which would only have lasted another 6 years 'til it happened again). And because this window is sewn in, it won't ever fall out. So you won't have to worry about that. For what is soon to be a 13-model-year-old car, this one is a pretty good one. With the continuous maintenance she's had by us (e.g., always synthetic oil, every 4k miles), and the work described above, she's got nothing but good miles ahead of her. And while you're not likely to find many 6-spd 225 hp TT's to begin with, it'll be harder still to find one driven less that 7k miles-per-year. But she's still (nearly) 13 years old, still with her original paint, interior, etc. and while she RUNS perfectly, she's not herself 'perfect'. As you can see in the picture, her front chin spoiler's bottom edge has see a couple of curbs or two in her day. This happens to so many TT's that you cannot find one of these parts in any junk yard. The online used Audi parts dealers never have them when I called. And a new one from Audi is like $1,200. I had thought about spraying this one with touch-up paint but then I thought I'd rather leave it so you can see what I'm talking about; I never try to conceal anything in a car I'm selling. In my opinion though, simple touch-up paint will make the problem all but unnoticeable. The latch on the glove box broke and so now you can only open the glove box by removing the passenger side panel. This vintage of TT still has the parcel shelf under the glove box (they did away with it on later models for reasons no one understands) so we used that instead. I suppose these lock assemblies can be found but then the car's ignition key will no longer lock it. The broken one goes with the car in case some handy buyer can find a way to fix it.And finally, the dreaded 'disappearing pixels' in the center display between the major gauges has cropped up, just within the last year. You can see it in the picture. I think they lasted as long as they did because we always kept the car garaged during our four years with it and I think that helped. Other than those problems, the usual little scratches, and one nearly invisible ding that any car this age and with 90k miles will collect, there's nothing wrong with her. Get in her and go. So the final question everyone wants to know is, if she's so fine, and she's got such low miles, and you've put so much money into her, why are you parting ways with her? Well, we just this weekend acquired a bright red, really low miles, 2005 S4 6-spd convertible, in bright 'arrest me red' color, mint condition and well, we just have to sell one of other cars. If you don't want to buy this convertible TT, maybe you'll want to consider buying my ultra-rare 1988 Mercedes 300sl roadster 5-spd manual (not a mis-print) which I'm also going to put back up for sale. Buyers are responsible for their own shipping, that is if you don't want to drive the car back to wherever. I'll accept PayPal, cash or certified check (which will have to clear before the car moves however).
