1980 Fiat X1/9. Azzuro Metalizziato/Parchment. 72K miles from new, or a little over 2K miles per year. We purchased this car from its one-and-only lady owner who bought it new in Seattle on a whim. She took the car home to Eugene, OR (my hometown) where she had it serviced at Sheppard Motors. Sheppard was founded in 1950 and is still in business today. In the '70's and early '80's it was an authorized dealer for Fiat and Volvo (today Volvo, Hyundai, and Volkswagen). In 1979 my mother bought a new Volvo 244DL from the people at Sheppard (which my older sister promptly totaled!). In the mid-1980's I would have my Spider and X1/9's serviced there, so my cars probably shared service space with this lovely blue car at one time or another (along with the Sheppard family's wonderful green Fiat Dino Spider). One thing is for sure...today this little X1/9 has just about the largest service file I've ever seen! Absolutely everything has been saved, including original contracts and corespondence with the good folks at Sheppard. Details and photos of these records will be added to this auction at it proceeds so please check back often. This car is a stunning example of a beautifully preserved Northwest car. I believe that the Pacific NW is the very best place in the country to find near-perfectly preserved cars, with soft rubber and un-cooked interiors and un-cracked dashes. Just about the worst thing for a classic car is constant, intense sun exposure. Cloudy skies here in Oregon make this a non-issue, and the cars you find here are often in amazing condition. There is just one caveat: these cars must always be garaged. This car has been garaged from day one. It has has sheepskin seat covers since day one. It has had a steering wheel cover since day one. Today, it is nearly impossible to find an X1/9 with a Parchment interior that hasn't been faded, yellowed, soiled, and baked by the sun. This car shows the Parchment option in its lovely original color and feel. The car is fully rust-free. Slight damage many years ago to the passenger door (by a bicycle) led to a complete repaint to an excellent factory standard. No overspray found. New badges front and rear just installed (they do not yet appear in these photos). Engine completely steam cleaned top to bottom. (Engine and front trunk photos will be added to this auction later so please check back...trunk is really, really beautiful). New timing belt. New starter. One of the very last carbureted Fiats brought to these shores, as they switched over to fuel injection about the same time as Ferrari did. This car starts, runs, shifts, and brakes as it did when it was new. Much time and effort has been expended to find some of the rarest (and most expensive!) parts still available to complete the car. It is done...it needs nothing but a new owner to use and enjoy her. Friends instantly began recounting horror stories about what to expect from a dealer---especially a dealer from whom I did not buy the car. I was feeling very discouraged, especially since little things were already starting to wrong throughout the car. I want you to know how relieved and pleased I am with the service and personal attention I have received from two of the men in your Service Department: Joe Vincent and Jim Demings. I have dealt with both men in the shop and over the telephone and they have always been very considerate, helpful, and willing to answer my questions. I have never been made to feel that my questions were unimportant or irrelevant. Mr. Vincent even took the time to show me where various things were located in the car (battery, coolant, brake and clutch fluid, oil, etc.) and answered my maintenance questions---things common enough but unfamiliar to me since I have always owned Volkswagens. The carb cooling tube, which always disintegrates on these cars, is going to be replaced as soon as the replacement unit arrives.
