Vehicle Detail
General – Advertise your own business, drive as is with the advertisements removed, or continue restoration. The 1951 GMC pickup is one of the most sought after trucks of the 1950s. This truck has a clear Montana title, it is licensed and insured and I drive it weekly. It is a lot of fun and takes you back in time. You will not have to worry about getting a ticket for texting because you will not enough hands to steer, shift, give hand and arm signals and still have time left over for sending a text or drinking a latte while driving this truck. What you will experience is the fun of driving as we did back in the day. Legend has it the truck has lived all of its life in what we call the Helena Valley. I bought this truck from the owner of the Windmill Nursery in Helena, Montana. He asked that I remove the graphics and I have done so, note the last two photos. Body and frame - The best part about this truck is there is very little rust; we are very dry here in Montana and use no salt. To be honest the pictures of the truck are flattering as the paint and body work are not perfect. The previous owner explained that his concept was it was it for advertisement; they did not fill in or beat out all of the little dings nor did they remove the trim and garnish before the truck was painted. Having said that, it turn heads wherever I go, I have yet to meet the adult who did not have one or someone in their family or a friend that had either the GMC or Chevy version. Should you decide to make a show truck out of it the work required will be fun and easy and you can drive it daily as you work. The rust is minimal and will not require you to take an adult education welding class down at your local VOTEC. All of the glass to include the unique curved rear windows is intact and not broken or cracked. The bed is in decent shape showing 57 years of use and minor rust. The tailgate is serviceable but you may want to replace or recover it for show. The bed currently has a sheet of heavy gauge sheet metal as a floor. I always thought putting the wooden bed back in would be a fun and satisfying job. The running boards which are difficult to find and expensive are intact. The frame and body attachment points are very solid. The front splash pan in front between the bumper and grill is missing, however the truck comes with a very nice used one ready for paint and installation. The truck also comes with an original uninstalled outside mirror. The truck has five brand new, ($800)10 ply, 15 inch truck tires. Mechanical - The engine could quite possibly be the original, at any rate I believe it to be a 228 CID. I rebuilt the carburetor; it also appears to have a new starter, voltage regulator, and generator, and either fairly new or reconditioned gas tank. The truck has been converted over to 12 volt, and starts really quickly. The transmission is a 4 speed and in very good shape, it does not jump out of gear and shifts smoothly. The transmission, clutch and driveshaft seem well balanced and in good shape. First gear is very low and does require a double clutch from a higher gear. The differential is original or of the right era, it is geared very low, so this is not an interstate cruiser. The brakes are adequate but the emergency brake needs attention, something I have put off, but would recommend as these old trucks were only a single chamber master cylinder. Currently there are no rear shocks as one shock mount is broken, so you want to make sure you have a lid on your coffee. The front end is surprisingly tight indicating good maintenance and or parts replacement as needed. Interior – The floor and the cab corners are solid. The seat appears to be original and has been recently recovered in an era correct material. A new in the box headliner and new in the box carpet are included in the sale. Probably the most astonishing aspect of the cab is the heater and blower motor still work. Pickup truck options were few back in the day but a must have in Montana was a heater. The truck also has a cold weather engine heater. Even the dome light still works. What doesn’t work is the horn. Most of the gages work, the fuel gage does not and ammeter shows discharge when it is in fact charging; I have seen this before when vehicles are converted to 12 volt. Also the speedometer needs a glass lens. The dash is complete and uncut. There is one of those phony aftermarket turn signals which does not work. Turn signals were not a requirement in 1951 and it is sort of fun to give hand and arm signals, (do you remember your driver’s ed.) but difficult when you are shifting, steering and trying to hold your coffee at the same time. Summary –This little truck is an excellent example of originality. It has been a long time since I have seen one this complete. It is totally drivable as is and can be enjoyed as is for work (note the picture of my yard work) or play or you can drive it while you make improvements. I really would not like to see this one made into a hot rod. It is too complete and deserves to continue as is or have someone turn it into a show truck. Payment, Disclaimers, Storage, and Transportation - I require a non refundable deposit of $500.00 within 48 hours and the remainder prior to me sending you the title. Well I have tried to represent the truck as honestly and accurately as I can; please read the description carefully and look closely at the pictures. Make no mistake the paint and body are not perfect. The truck is sold as is, where is, and with no guarantee nor warrantee implied or specified. I am very proud of my 100% rating and will answer questions. I will post some of them so that others may benefit. The truck can be stored in a secure compound and can remain so as long as you want as long as long as you pay the rent of $25 per month. I do have a tow truck and trailer and could deliver or do a partial delivery for $1.00 per loaded mile within a reasonable distance. Good luck with your bidding and thank you for your interest. On Jun-17-12 at 20:41:04 PDT, seller added the following information: I have noticed that there are some bids on my truck from ebay members with 0 feedback. I will not stop you from bidding, but please understand if you are the high bidder you have an ethical as well as legal obligation to follow through with your payment. These auctions cost us a lot of money and I don't have that much. Thank you.
