Vehicle Detail
1968 Pontiac GTO Authentic PHS Documented Numbers Matching Car VIN: 242378Z119670 On February 23, 1968 a local gentleman walked in to McKee Pontiac in Oregon City, Oregon and placed his order for a new GTO. He’d read that Pontiac was re-designing the car for the new model year and wanted something extra sporty AND safe for his wife. Both Mr. & Mrs. Myers were very impressed by the new long hood, short deck styling and the unique, energy absorbing urethane front bumper. Being a frugal man, and knowing the car would only be driven sparingly by the wife, he took delivery with the AM-only radio option and made sure to include power steering. It absolutely made sense not pass up the Hurst “his-n-hers” console shifter as the choice for the Turbo Hydra-matic transmission. He also had to pay a little extra for the sporty hood-mounted tachometer, Soft-Ray windshield and retractable headlight covers, but got the powerful, dependable 400 CID V-8 in the bargain. His GTO would come standard with dual exhaust, bucket seats and real woodgrain vinyl on the dash! When everything was said & done a check for $3,231.62 was written and off he drove back home to show his wife. Over the next decade the GTO was loved and well cared for. As planned, it was driven very sparingly. When Mr. Myer's days ended his wife put the car into dry storage. Little did she know at the time that it would last for fifteen years! In the early summer of 1995 the elderly Mrs. Myers sold the GTO to a gentleman from Washington State who planned to maintain its stock integrity as much as possible, also keeping it in drivable condition for special occasions. Over time the factory carburetor was updated to a more efficient Edelbrock 650 CFM four bbl, wire looms were added and matched Edelbrock aluminum valve covers and air cleaner assembly spruced up the engine compartment. Sometime in the 1980’s old-school Crager SS chrome wheels replaced the 14-inch factory Rally II wheels. In 2005 the GTO was again put into dry, long-term storage with the mileage counter then reading 22,003. Over the past seven years less than 110 additional miles have been added to the clock as you see it today. The VIN Code (242378Z119670) breaks down as follows: 2 = Pontiac Motor Division 42 = GTO (ALL real GTO’s have 4 & 2 in the 2nd and 3rd position) 37 = Two Door Hardtop 8 = 1968 Model year Z = Fremont, California Assembly Plant 1 = Less Than 100,000 units This was the 19,670 Pontiac assembled in the 1968 model year Beginning in 1968 Pontiac stamped the Vehicle Identification Number, consisting of the figure 2 followed by the last eight digits of the car serial number, into a machined pad on the RH front of the engine block. We have visually verified and can confirm that this engine is indeed original to the car as it reads “28Z119670”. Further documentation comes from the PHS history report included with the sale and spells out that this standard 400 CID came with a 4 bbl carb rated at 10.75 compression ratio and 350 Horsepower. The rear axle is 3.36. CONDITION: The photos really do tell the story. All the glass is good. The original trim shows well with no pitting on any of the chrome. Open the trunk and you’ll find a spare and the original jack still bolted in place. We find NO rust in the quarters – for that matter, you’ll be hard pressed to come across rust in any of the usual spots. The engine compartment has been lightly detailed and satin black applied sometime in the past. The engine was repainted Old Chevy blue, but aside from that, is all-original. Feel free to climb over, under and around this car - I know you’ll come up smiling! Please take another good look at the interior pictures. Settle into the driver’s seat and you’d swear this rig couldn’t really be 44 years old! Everything is clean and correct right down to the window cranks. There are NO wear spots, tears, splits or fading of the vinyl upholstery front or back. The door panels and carpet were replaced when storage commenced seven years ago and are as-new. The headliner is intact, but could stand replacement down the road (I’ll include a new, boxed one in the trunk for you). Mechanically I feel the car is in fine shape. Even after sitting in our warehouse for a few days it starts right up with the first few cranks – you just can’t beat these bullet-proof 6.5 liter V8’s! It also helps that a new fuel pump was installed last week. While driving it after we took delivery, I can tell you that it freeway accelerates to 70 MPH almost before you can blink! If you are in the market for a well-kept collectable GTO please give this car your kind attention. I seriously doubt you’ll find another in this shape with such a ridiculously low reserve! As a veteran Ebay vehicle seller with scores of satisfied online buyers, I want you to confidently bid knowing that this car runs and drives out as it should AND that it is being properly represented to you. Accordingly, here are the only negatives I can think to point out: first, the paint is a good ten-footer. It’s very passable, but sometime in the distant past pitch sat on the hood, roof and trunk that doesn’t want to all buff off. I’ve found only one spot, about an inch in diameter, below the rear window on the driver’s side, where body filler is present and it has buckled there over time. The “pull back” spring on the passenger’s headlight cover has lost spring tension and allows the cover to droop a bit as pictured. When the carpets were replaced, the installer left the front bucket seat belts in the trunk. Both sets are there, just waiting for you! The radio doesn’t work and I’ve already mentioned the headliner. That’s about it. TERMS OF SALE: In fairness to all bidders Reserves are held in confidence until after the end of the auction. Please check the photos over closely and call with any questions BEFORE you place a bid! You are encouraged to inspect the vehicle at our premises on weekdays, so send your representative early to be sure you don't miss this one. We reserve the right to cancel your bid if you have any negative feedback. DEALERS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME TO BID! We reserve the right to end the auction early if the car is no longer for sale or an acceptable offer has been agreed to. A nonrefundable $500 deposit is due within 48 hours of the auction’s end. All costs of transport to your location are the responsibility of the purchaser. The GTO can be stored in our warehouse for up to 14 days after the sale (assuming full payment has been received). $15 per day will be charged after this period. I’m always happy to help coordinate pickup and loading with the transporter you choose. I’d suggest checking with Dependable Auto Shippers (DAS) for a quote. They are eBay's recommended transporter and we've used them many times to deliver our customer's cars. The U-Ship.com website is also very good for vehicle transport quotes. Please feel free to Email or call me at 206/914-1173 with any questions. My name is Mark Thompson. Thanks for looking and happy bidding! I can't guarantee that every physical and internal defect or flaw has been uncovered, but have tried to accurately describe the major points at the time of the auction. The vehicle is sold as-is, where-is, with no warranty expressed or implied. Having said that, I know of no reason why you couldn't drive it anywhere.
