Vehicle Detail
Condition: This is a very rare barn find 1-10 550 Spyders built by CMI Classic Motors International and the Legendary Car engineer builder Wilhelm Cashen. If you want to make this a 99 point car you should restore it. The good news is that the restoration will be easier than most Porsche vehicles because there is no rust on the chassis or suspension components and most of the work would be focused on cleaning, prep and paint. The car is in fair condition and has set for 8 or more years. The body shows It has not been in any accidents; no cracks in the body, 550 Spyder new front and rear turn signal lens assemblies included, seats and head rest needs to be reupholstered, the German carpet can be cleaned, 356 B brakes should be rebuilt, Weber carburetors should be rebuilt, Koni 356 shocks OK, transmission OK, Gauges Black face 914 type, wiring should be gone through. The car was painted Porsche India Red from the CMI factory in 1977-78 and still has that original paint. Features:1. The only actual 550 copy (Meaning, most parts have been copied directly from a 1955 550 Porsche Spyder that Wilhelm Cashen campaigned in 1978-79 in Vintage Races) 2. Detailed workmanship (Each of the parts were drawn and remade new from the drawings for the 10 production cars) 3. Original chassis design (Chassis frame tool was built from an original Porsche 550 Spyder that tool is now located at fibersteel and will be use to create cars of this quality sometime in the near future) 4. 356 B drum brakes (The front brakes are air cooled wire cowls could be attached) 5. 912 Porsche Engine (Rebuilt at the CMI factory in 1977) 6. New parts included (New front and rear 550 signal lens) 7. Original design shift linkage design (The linkage was changed in scale only for heavier weight road driving) 8. Original throttle linkage design (Rod type) 9. Original design transmission shifting mechanism (Shift box and rod assembly are same as Original design with the exception of the reverse lock out) 10. Twin Weber 40 IDA Carbs 11. 4-speed manual transmission (The rear transmission mount was redesigned because the original Porsche 550 Spyder had a "split case" transmission and have to adapt to a 1966-67 style transmission design) 12. 1955-66 Porsche 550 Spyder turn signal switch 13. Wiring fuse box Original style Bosch open body fuses 14. Nardi Wood Steering Wheel 15. Hydraulic clutch actuator 16. Original front 356 Transmission mounts17. Original 550 Spyder hand brake (The design of the hand brake was detailed from the hand brake on the 550 Spyder race car) History: As close as you can get to a $3 million+ dollar original Porsche 550 Spyder for a fraction of the cost. This is one of 10 hand built cars by automotive engineer and designer Wilhelm Cashen. Built in late 1977-early 1978 after returning from Germany where he was in school, Wilhelm and Curt Paluzzi a friend and Porschephile decided to build the finest 550 Spyder re-creation that would capture the attention of the world. The car was built by hand with 2 helpers. The car was at the LA Autoshow in 1980 along with 2 other CMI 550 Spyders. The car was purchased by ALTA Classic of Utah. They were a Porsche 356 restoration shop headed by Lori Lavia who was Porsche factory trained in Germany in the early 1960s. The car was sold to some one just after that and the car was used by Chuck Beck to get orders for his early cars and was put on the cover of Kit Car magazine as one of his early cars. The car was sold in Northern California and was there until 2006. Then it was purchased and brought to Fibersteel-Russ Rodrigus for restoration where it has been in storage since 2006. This is the car that was featured on the cover of Kit Car 1981 and in several publications. Gerry Sutterfield, said that the "CMI Cashen 550 Spyders are finest re-creation of the Porsche 550 Spyder because of the extreme attention to detail and correctness". The CMI-550 Spyder is a light weight sports car with the correct design rigged frame and is very quick and very nimble and drives as the original 550 Spyder drove. The cars value in excellent condition is $65,000 - $100,000 depending on the completion of the restoration and if the rt side oil sump tank and system and the rear lower engine cover was added to the car along with minor extra components, original green/black gauge face instruments, Shipping and payment: We welcome any questions 818-333-3694 - 310-467-1193 you have about the car, and can assist in getting the car professionally transported to you if needed.
