Vehicle Detail
It is a commonly known fact that the MG TC was the little post war automobile that started the British sports car invasion in the US that lasted well into the 80's. Here is your chance to experience this delightful little car and it is ready for you to drive away. Up for bid is a beautiful1948 MGTC in British Racing Green with tan interior - excellent condition, mechanically flawless and all set to enjoy. This 1948 MGTC was originally exported to India. Sometime in the 1970s' it was brought into the US in a large packing crate and put into storage in Southern California. It sat there for a number of years and when the storage fee was not paid the previous owner, the manager of the storage facility, bought the crate for back rent (I have pictures of the car in the crate and just after it was removed). The PO then sent the car out for a frame off restoration which was completed in 1988 (I have receipts from that restoration and pictures showing the car at various stages in the restoration). I purchased the car in 2004, but because the car had only been driven about 300 miles since the frame off restoration, the carburetors had gummed up and the engine over rev'd resulting in a spun bearing. This necessitated the pulling of the engine and a complete engine rebuild. While the engine was out I decided to refurbish and repair other parts of the car that needed attention due to the long time it had been sitting. This work was all completed in early 2005. The following is a list of the many systems rebuilt, replaced and/or refurbished. I have complete records of everything done to the car during my ownership along with pictures of that work in progress. · Steering was rebuilt by a local British car specialist. · Complete engine rebuild to include; valve train rebuild with all new valves, valve seats and springs; new rings; new bearings; block and head surfacing; line boring; oil pump rebuild; magnaflux of crank, rods, block and head (all okay); hone cylinders; regrind cam; grind crank; reface flywheel and reassemble engine. All work done by a local machine shop. · Cleaned rust from bottom of tool box and battery box and painted with rust inhibiting paint. · Removed gas tank and had boiled, sealed and repainted. Installed new sending unit and unlike many cars it doesn't leak and the sending unit works. · Removed radiator and had boiled. · Broken and cracked joints on oil pan and transmission mount welded ( both aluminum). · Starter and dynamo (generator) rebuilt. · Rebuilt brake master cylinder and slave cylinders, tested and adjusted. · Rebuilt two SU carburetors. · Replaced battery. · Driveshaft balanced. · Sent out all gauges to be rebuilt and properly face painted (note I optioned not to have the clock replaced so it doesn't work). · Reinstalled engine and transmission after rebuild utilizing reinforcing plates for rear engine/transmission mount to insure it doesn't break again. · Replaced clutch plate and throw out bearing. · Refinished the wooden dash and reinstalled all gauges. Had metal dash plate re-stenciled and it and the dash light bases painted. · Installed new carpets (old carpets had been a cat sleeping area and I couldn't get the fur out). · Car fired up immediately on re-installation of engine and other parts. Car has about 3000 miles on it since engine rebuild. · Since then I have performed other work to include; periodic maintenance, tuned spoke wheels, replace steering linkage (one of the studs broke), rebuilt wiper motor and replaced master cylinder (the old was working fine, but the old aluminum cap was so torn up and I couldn't find a replacement that would fit, so I opted to replace the whole cylinder), rebuilt lever shock absorbers and replaced suspension bushings. · As noted above I have all receipts, records and pictures of the work that was done both from the previous frame off restoration and the work I had done since my ownership. Some notes on the car as it is today. · Engine runs like a top. Even if it is not started for several months it fires right up. · Mechanically the car is in excellent condition as noted by all the work done above. Car runs, steers and stops like it should and all maintenance is performed periodically. · Interior looks great, seats are in excellent condition as are the carpets and other interior surfaces. · All gauges and lights work (except the clock noted above). Turn signals were installed in the past and work perfectly and the headlights were upgraded in the past to sealed beams. The car was also converted to negative ground. The wiring harness was completely replaced in the 1980's restoration. · The car was last painted in the 1980's restoration and it shows some signs of age (ie light scratches, dings, etc.), but still shines beautifully and looks great from 5 ft. There is some little evidence of old rust (note my comment above on tool and battery box), but all was cleaned up and there is no rust that I know of on the car now. Chrome is in great shape with only a couple of small parts showing a little pitting, but nothing serious. The wood body frame was all replaced in 1988 and is still in excellent condition. · The car comes with top, side curtains and new tonneau cover which are all excellent condition. Tools include jack, hand crank (for starting if the battery dies), copper hammer and owner's manual (reproduction). I also have mechanic's manuals and assorted parts. This is a great driver in excellent condition, very reliable for a British car that was basically designed in the mid 1930s'. It's fun to drive and always gets attention. I can help arrange for shipping to any location for an additional cost. Payment by cashiers check only. Please contact me if you would like further information. On May-12-12 at 22:16:28 PDT, seller added the following information: I have had a question about the paint and here is my answer. The best way to describe the paint is it is a 5 footer, in other words the paint looks great from 5 feet away. As I noted the car was last painted in 1988 or so and therefore paint has much of the wear and tear you would expect from a 25 year old paint job. In addition there is an area on the rear fender where the paint has shrunk a bit causing a little wrinkling. The front edge of both the front fenders have an old repair, about the size of a silver dollar on each fender, that has telegraphed through and shows as a slight raised area. On the other hand the paint shines up very nicely as you can see from the pictures. I even took it to a painter a couple of weeks ago to see how much it would cost to repaint the car before I sell it, and the owner of the shop talked me out of painting the car, saying it's a five footer and looks great.
