This package added a functional ram-air intake system for the LS1 engine, adding increased horsepower and torque. Trans Am models equipped with the WS6 package were similar to non-WS6 cars in other respects. These cars were some of the fastest production cars available at the time, and were known for providing high performance at a fraction of the price of other cars with similar performance numbers. Performance The WS6 package was only available as an upgrade to the 5.7 L (346 cubic inch) LS1 engine. This engine normally produced 305 horsepower and 335 foot-pounds of torque at 5,200 and 4,000 rpm, respectively. With the WS6 package, these numbers increased to 320 horsepower and 350 foot-pounds of torque. This gave a WS6 Trans Am impressive speed, with a 0 to 60 acceleration time of 4.7 seconds and a quarter-mile time under 13 seconds. Engine Specifications The LS1 engine featured all-aluminum construction. Cylinders had a bore of 3.9 inches and a stroke of 3.62 inches. Engine compression was set at a 10.1-to-1 ratio. Fuel delivery was via sequential port injection and each cylinder had a dual overhead valve configuration. The WS6 package provided dual ram-air intakes linked to functional hood scoops. These differed from the standard air intake system on other LS1 engines. Fuel economy for the WS6 was estimated at 19 mpg city and 28 mpg highway for manual transmission, with figures of 18 mpg city and 26 mpg highway for automatic transmission. Physical Specifications The 1998 to 2002 Pontiac Trans Am WS6 had a wheelbase of 101 inches and an overall length of 193.7 inches. Front and rear track measurements were 60.6 and 60.7 inches, respectively, with an overall width of 74.4 inches. Maximum height was 51.8 inches. Curb weight was 3,517 pounds for cars with automatic transmission and 3,495 pounds for manual transmission. Convertibles weighed approximately 100 pounds more. Horsepower The WS6 package took the LS-1 V8's horsepower up to 320 horsepower at 5,200 rpm. Torque The WS6 package jumped the torque rating up to 345 foot-pounds at 4,000 rpm. Speed The WS6 took all of its power and turned it into good performance numbers. It went from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 5.2 seconds with a manual transmission and 6.0 in an automatic. It ran through the 1/4-mile drag strip in 13.4 seconds at 106.2 MPH and had an overall top speed of 165 MPH.
