Vehicle Detail

This 1981 Fairmont Station Wagon has the original copper red paint, the 200 cubic inch 6 cylinder engine, auto transmission, AC, cloth seats. power steering, power brakes, cruise control, luggage rack on top, and Radio Shack Cassette Stereo, with 134,200 miles on it. We have lots more pictures, we would be glad to email to you. We have clear title, $300 deposit due at the end of auction via paypal, and balance due when you pick up the car, located south of Lincoln Nebraska. The body has straight sheet metal, since we have avoided any accidents, except few years back a car started to change lanes and scraped the left side mirror, it is hard to see, but there are some small scratches there. The floorpans and shock towers are very solid. The doors, hood, and hatch all open and close just fine, a couple nicks in the windshield, but no cracks in any of the glass. No cracks in the dash either, and the carpet is in good shape. The seats are fine, do not show much wear, no stains or tears, we kept a pad in the back over the rear cargo carpets. One pair of tires has a couple thousand miles on them, the other pair has been run about 20k. The paint is still good, but the pics might make it look better than it is, the car has sat outside the last couple years, and is fading from the original color. The headliner is starting to sag towards the rear, as was so common in this model, and we have stapled it back up. The cargo area shows sunfading on the side panels. As far as we know, everything still works on the car (seatbelts, lights, wipers, heat). The AC has been converted to R-134 but has not been serviced in several years, so while the blower works fine, it is not cold. Also, we were non-smokers. PROBLEMS that I notice include, the headliner towards the rear has been stapled back up, body is rusted through above both front wheels, a small rusty area behind the rear passenger door, and the finish has some cracking there also, Fairmont insignia fell off the rear hatch, a small dent in the chrome trim by window on rear passenger door where a branch fell on it, when the car is warm and you accelerate with windows down, you get a whiff of gas odor (probably a dried out gasket on accelerator pump). The lift cartridges on rear hatch are weak, and I usually use a stick to ensure it stays open. There is a small hole in the back bumper. Part of the pollution control system used a pipe to recirculate exhaust gases, and those were very prone to rust through. I have been wrapping heavy aluminum foil around it for last few years to keep it quiet and that seems to work ok. Many folks have just removed that pipe, but that will be for next owners to decide. The car runs down the road just fine. Bought it in 1985, and used it for family vacation travels until they all went to college. It had mostly highway miles, but for the last few years, it gets very little use, and has been sitting outside, so time for somebody else to get some use out of it. The battery works fine, but has enough years on it that it may need replaced before long. MAINTENANCE - We have tried to keep up repairs as the car aged. Oil and filter change every 3000 miles, coolant changed every 3 to 5 years. Items of note include: At 134k - new steering flexible coupler 132k - new pair of tires 131k - muffler & tail pipe 126k - new fuel pump 117k - Spark plugs, wires, rotor, distributor cap, PCV 112k - new pair of tires 112k - new steering rack, alignment, water pump, radiator cap 107k - new U joints, headlights, heater core and hoses 104k - new AC compressor and dryer, switched to R-134a, new drive and steering belts 100k - change transmission fluid, front brakes, valve cover gasket 90k - new gas tank 75k - Rebuild rear end differential, rear main oil seal 70k - front struts and rear shocks
