Vehicle Detail

Pontiac made the decision in 1978 to build the last of the 400 V-8's to be installed in the 79 Trans Ams. There were only a handful of the high outpurt (W72) 400's for the 79 year, but they sure got it right by mating the engine with the 4 speed transmission. I have one of these cars that I am offering for sale. It is a highly optioned car, black on black, original, and ready to go. I believe that the Bandit Run begins on May 11th in Texarkana, and this would be the one to have on the trip. I was actually able to find two build sheets of this car, and a picture is attached of the best one. I mention this because it shows the performance and handling options that were ordered for this TA. The engine is always a good place to start; L78 is the code for the high output 400 Pontiac V8 with the 4BBL carberatuer. This engine only came with the 4 speed transmission (M21, close-ratio Borg Warner) and the rear end is a 3.23 positration with disc brakes. Although the engine was rated at 220 horsepower, this was measured at the rear wheels and was the king of the hill in 1979. Of course, it is nice to have some punch, but this car also handles like a sports car with manners. This is courtesy of the WS6 handling and special performance package. The package included oversize sway bars in front and rear; 8 inch snowflake wheels, and disc brakes on the rear. I replaced all four rotors, calipers, and pads which got the car back to the new handling feel. Also, four new BF Goodrich TA's were added to complete the handling package. I did replace and fill all the drive train fluid levels, but the engine, transmission, and rearend are original to the car and have not been removed. When doing a repaint on a black car, it is always nice to start with a rust free body that has minimum bumps and bruises. I did have the TA professionally painted it its original Code 19 black almost a year ago. The pictures speak for themselves; but as further proof to the quality, the car won best paint at a North Georgia festival and car show last summer. Well over a hundred cars were professionally judged, and it says a lot when a black car wins best paint. After the paint work was finished, a new Phoenix Graphics decal kit was applied; it is the correct Silver, Gray, and Red bird that came on the car. The black paint, and silver decal combination is just stunning. Take a close look at the interior pictures, it is code 19N which is black deluxe. The seat covers and the door panels are original; I cleaned them, but they were just too good to replace. This car came with the factory radio/CB combination and power antenna; it all works. Everthing works inside the car; tachometer, speedometer, A/C, turn signals, and even the clock. The power windows zip up and down, just a testimony of the quality of the interior. Although I usually like to install new weather stipping around the windows and doors, the fit was great and very litlle wind noise; so I left it alone. This is definitely a 10 on the interior scale. This is difinitely one of the finest examples of a 1979 Trans Ams; in fact it has been used by a couple of other restorers as the template of what is right and original on these cars. The TA is totally restored and ready to drive. I have attended several cruise ins and shows and it always performs and looks great. Just remember, this was and is the last of the big cubic inch Pontiac Trans Ams. 1979 marked the end of the muscle car era. I am attaching my phone number so that I can answer any questions. Please feel free to call and free to inspect the car with an appointment before the auction ends. This TA has a Georgia title in my name. But please understand you are bidding to buy; not to be the first to inspect. The winning bidder will be required to pay a $3000.00 deposit within 48 hours of the bid close and complete the purchase within 7 days. Randy 770/634-3093 On Apr-16-12 at 08:43:03 PDT, seller added the following information: Thanks for all the compliments. Just a little about the history of the the TA; it was purchased at Plaza Pontiac in Tucker, GA. Technically, I am the third owner as I bought it from the daughter of the original owner. I added some close up pictures of the build sheet so it is easier to read. Please do not text offers to me; although they are interesting, I do not do texting. On May-06-12 at 18:05:28 PDT, seller added the following information: I have had a couple of questions about the exhaust. It now has true dual exhaust; of course with new pipe, mufflers, and splitters. I have also had numberous request to list a buy it now price. There are so few 79's with the 400 and 4 speed combination; it is difficult to find any that are in comparable condition. But, I have decided to list a buy it now price of $26,400. The payment terms and conditions will also apply On May-07-12 at 19:23:10 PDT, seller added the following information: With a little less than 24 hours left in the auction for this Trans Am, I want to thank everyone for the interest and the bids. I have had numberous requests for the reserve price. The bids are getting very close to the reserve, and it may be a good time to let everyone know the number. The reserve is $21,800. Good luck bidding!
