The fourth generation Thunderbird built on the successes of the previous two generations—four seats and lots of luxury. The so-called “square Birds” of 1964-1966, were an evolution of the third generation’s bullet-like styling, and the cars themselves probably had more in common with the Lincoln Continental than with most other Ford products. These are wonderful cars to own, maintenance is easy, and performance is lively from the powerful V8 under the hood.
This particular 1964 Thunderbird convertible presents as a solid driver that will be welcome at local shows and cruise nights. The Rangoon Red bodywork was restored several years ago, and still looks great, thanks to excellent maintenance and quality workmanship. Originally Medium Turquoise, the flashy red makes this big ‘Bird impossible to miss and emphasizes the car’s numerous body details. The styling was more squared-off than third generation T-Birds, with long body moldings running from nose to tail. The new-for-1964 grille is nicely finished, with horizontal ribs filling the opening created by a split front bumper. In back, the rear bumper was integrated into the body, and held the new rectangular taillights with delicate back-up lights in the valence underneath. The chrome and bright work on this car remains in good condition, having been restored with the rest of the body. Fender skirts were standard equipment, and those on this car are excellent, and attach to rust-free quarter panels.
Inside, you’ll find a black and white cockpit that is pure 1960s cool. With comfortable buckets up front and a split bench in back, four passengers ride in comfort and style. A full-length console bisects the interior, ensuring that the T-Bird would remain a 4-seater. Brushed stainless and aluminum trim is in excellent condition, with bright accents on the door panels and center console. Seat covers, door panels, and the dash pad are all done in white, with contrasting black carpets to give the interior a solid foundation. Overhead is one of the most complex convertible top mechanisms ever devised. Originally used on the Ford retractables in the late 1950s and later the 4-door Lincoln Continental convertible, it uses hundreds of feet of wire, a dozen hydraulic motors, and complex relays and switches to control not only the top itself, but the trunk lid under which it stows. You could probably charge admission to watch the acrobatics: the trunk opens backwards, the tonneau cover flips itself up into position while the top folds neatly into the trunk compartment, which then seals itself up neatly with no visible trace of the top stack. The system on this car is fully operational and works reliably, stowing the older white convertible top in about 30 seconds.
Power comes from Ford’s powerful 390 cubic inch V8, which in 1964 was making 300 horsepower thanks to a four-barrel carburetor and dual exhaust. Rebuilt during the restoration, the engine runs beautifully with a crisp burble from the exhaust and a pleasant burst of torque when prodded. Dressed with correct gold valve covers and air cleaner, the Thunderbird’s engine compartment is serviceable and well-maintained, and a professional-level detailing would easily elevate it to the next level. The transmission is a 3-speed automatic that clicks through the gears almost imperceptibly, again reinforcing this car’s ties to Lincoln as much as Ford. Power brakes and power steering were part of the recipe on the Thunderbird, making for effortless cruising. It rides on 15-inch steel wheels with correct hubcaps and recent whitewall radials.
With dramatic styling that’s instantly recognizable, sixties Thunderbirds are awesome collectables. They’re reliable, powerful, and easy to own, with a massive supplier network and a very enthusiastic owners group. Few things compare to motoring down the road in Ford’s top-of-the-line car, guiding it with your fingertips while you listen to the big V8 rumble under the hood. Grab three friends and hit the road, this is a car that’s always up for a road trip. Call today!
