The vehicle is a 2003 Ford Excursion XLT four wheel drive SUV. The vehicle has a gray exterior and interior. It is a former police vehicle that was used for Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program and normal patrol duties. The Northwest Lancaster County Regional Police Department has been the only owner of the vehicle. The vehicle is equipped with a V-10 6.8L engine that needs major repair work. Other than the bottom of the driver’s door having a medium size rust problem, the vehicle just has minimal cosmetic damage in the form a few minor scratches. The bottom of the passenger side view mirror is broke but still functional. A small segment of the front grill is missing and one of the rear door panels is loose. There are rubber grommet style plugs in the roof of the vehicle where prior emergency light wiring and antennae were located. The vehicle can be examined by appointment. Our mechanic determined that their is a high probability that it will need to be replaced or completely rebuilt. You could hear the clanking of broken metal parts when the engine was running. We do not know the precise problem. Our police commission opted to replace the vehicle rather than have the engine pulled and torn apart to determine exactly what the repair would entail. The vehicle was close to the recommended replacement age for a police unit. It did not make sense to spend several hundred dollars to remove the engine and tear it apart to make an exact detrmination of what the issue is. Our mechanic has been very reliable and a straight shooter through the years. His diagnosis that it involved a major issue was enough for our police commission. I would evlauate the repair status as if the engine needs replaced or at the minimum a complete rebuilding.
