Vehicle Detail
This auction is for a 1984 Mercedes Benz 300TD - A classic. I purchased this car a year or so ago as a restoration project, to eventually be my daily driver. To my knowledge, the car has never been run on anything other than diesel. I do not know if the mileage is correct or not, due to the age of the car. I think many of these are far over the mileage listed on the odometer. My daily driver (1984 300D) I would guess has at least 400k on it, judging by the seats, etc in this car vs my daily. This car I think would have between 225k and 325k judging by it's condition. Things I have done to this car: Replaced Alternator ($120 - 120amp alt, I think from a Saab - Ebay purchased)Replaced axleshafts ($150)Replaced stock headlights with MINT Euro headlights ($400)Replaced console wood and switches ($300) - all windows work! Purchased RARE cross Roof Rails - ($250)Repaired non functioning rear hydraulic suspension:Hydraulic Struts on both sides ($800)Replaced high and low pressure lines ($120)Resealed SLS pump with Mercedes Source kit (~$50) Purchased kit to rebuild sls valve, but valve is not leaking, will be including in saleOnly running FEBI SLS fluid from autohausAZ.com - ($200 worth of fluid troubleshooting/repairing)Purchased blue dashboard cover - not installed yet. ($50)Purchased Struts for rear hatch - requires wacky bit to remove. Purchased bit set, haven't gotten back to it. ($65)Custom Stainless Steel Exhaust - TURBO BACK. Never needs another exhaust! ($priceless!)Fresh tires on original wheels (14" bundts, see below) I purchased this car originally with the intention of repairing it and running it on filtered vegetable oil. I currently drive my 100 mile a day commute on a 1984 300D (sedan). I love this car to bits, but I must buy a tow vehicle to pull a car trailer for my offroading truck. With 3 vehicles currently registered and insured, I do not wish to add a 4th, AND juggle a 5th car in my driveway. One of them has to go, and my blue baby is the one that makes the most sense, currently. This car has less rust than the car I drive daily, or the one before that which I'm parting out (81 coupe in the background of one of the pics) It definitely could use a good wash/wax, which I've never gotten around to doing yet. She has fresh glow plugs (within the past 2 months, all Bosch) gets Rotella T 15w40 for oil. She has the usual oil leaks, clunks while shifting (had it perfect for a day playing with vacuum leaks!) - All the door locks work with vacuum, most of the vents change position properly - I say most because the floor vent -SOMETIMES- doesn't open. I haven't dug into that yet either, but was on my list. It has an aftermarket radio that someone else put in - It actually sounds quite good, and has an aux in. I made a custom setup for DC outlets in the ashtray - looks clean as you can see in the pictures. It's wired to it's own fused line right to the battery - I like a GPS to stay on if I shut the car off to go in a rest stop for a minute, just my preference. You could easily set up a relay to use that as it's main feed and have it switch with ACC from the radio. The car has a manual sunroof that works great - definitely needs grease but I'm out of the "Mercedes Sunroof Paste" currently and know better than to use anything else. All the lights work, turnsignals, brakelights headlights, high and low. Cruise is not operational and doesn't even have the servo under the hood. This was missing when I got it - and looks like it hasn't been there in AGES. The AC on this car doesn't work - no belt on the pump since I've owned it - I've found these cars have good enough wind patterns with the windows all down that I don't even need it for 95% of the time. This car, parked outside in 8 degree weather (-20 with windchill!) will start and run as though it's a summer day after sitting for 3 weeks. Things I would look to do next in no particular order: Window Seals. No huge leaks that I've found, but they're all old. The front windshield has lots of goo that previous owner(s?) have done.Side mirrors - very stiff. Mercedes source has a great tutorial on lubricating them. Back plastics. The plastic that goes over the speakers on the rear of the wagon is currently detached. It's got a massive bow in it due to heat warp - very common for a car that was in the south. With how little rust it has, it definitely must have spent some time down south. It is missing the plastics that go on the rear hatch. I had a guy who was going to send them to me, but never got back around to it. EGR Bypass - I have it currently disconnected from the vacuum system, but I haven't installed the block off plates, etc. I will include with the car. SLS System. The oil is still dark in the SLS reservoir. I've been told that if the pump has been resealed (in February2012) then it's probably just gunk in the system. I suspect it's the accumulators - as it's the only pieces I haven't done yet... Luckily, those are the cheap parts of the whole system! The car does bounce as it goes over some bumps - but since I've never been in another wagon that even had the SLS working, I don't know if it's bad or good. Since it bounces worse than my sedan, I'm guessing that Mercedes wouldn't find that acceptable. I think the car needs an idler arm in the steering. It pulls with the crown of the road. Valve Adjustment - never got around to it. Have valve cover seal, will be included as well. Trans vacuum / bowden cable adjustment - again, haven't gone back to it - my commute is almost all highway so for me it was just 'on my list' Trans fluid/filter swap - All of them need it - still needs to be done here too. Level and color is good, no burning smell, but really just should be done. Sand down the areas near the jack points and repaint them. They are JUST starting to peel off the factory paint as seen in the pics. I'd replace the drivers door - Maybe someone else could fix the rust hole starting in the corner, but I think there's enough blue doors out there from sedans that would fit without issue that it's not worth the time. ignition lock - I was planning on replacing it with a new tumbler from the dealer, since the main key matches all the doors in the car. It's currently using the tumbler from my parts car... which I've actually kinda grown to like, having a different one for the doors on a second keyring! In summary... I love this car, as you probably can tell by now. I really don't want to let it go, but I just have too many vehicles to be reasonable. I'll be kicking myself as it drives away, I'm sure. As for the drivability of this car - I wouldn't hesitate to take it on a drive to Florida tomorrow. I've just driven it to work for the past 2 weeks (due to my woman driving my daily since her 08 Mini is being unreliable *grin*) - This car consistently gets in the high 20s for mpg. We're still on winter diesel and this car last week did 27.3mpg, just over 400 miles to the tank. In the summertime, this car will do 29-31, which is incredible for a 2 ton car! My other one rarely gets over 26 even in the summer. THE WHEELS PICTURED ON THE CAR WILL NOT BE GOING WITH THE CAR. The wheels that will go on the car are the stock aluminum 14" wheels that most of the w123 cars have. The tires on the original rims are probably 6 months old and not 1k miles on them. They're in perfect condition and in good balance. I just haven't had a chance to swap them out.
