Vehicle Detail
1995 FORD SVT MUSTANG COBRA R VIN: 1FALP42C8SF213694 ASSEMBLED AT DEARBORN PLANT ON 03/01/1995 LIMITED EDITION COBRA “R” THIS IS #173 OF A BUILD OF 250 STILL IN THE WRAPPER ONLY “104” ACTUAL MILES Since demand for the 1993 Cobra R had far exceeded the 100-car run, SVT increased availability of the 1995 version to 250 units. Many of the first Rs had gone straight to collectors’ garages (bypassing the racetracks), so Ford insisted that sales of the ’95 would be made only to licensed active competitors in the SCCA and IMSA series. This second-generation Cobra R signified a new high-water mark for late-model Mustang performance; not since 1973 had a Mustang been available with 351 cubic inches of small-block V-8. Since the standard Cobra’s 5.0-liter / 302-cid V-8 and R-model’s 351-cid V-8 were part of the same “family,” emissions certifications was easier than if a different power plant had been chosen. A Ford marine block forms the basis for the super V-8, with a special camshaft, aluminum alloy pistons, forged steel connecting rods, GT40 heads and lower intake and specifically designed upper intake manifold making up most of the performance gains. Visually topping of the package is a “5.8 Liter Cobra” plate on the intake manifold. The greater displacement produces 300 hp and 365 lbs.-ft torque. SVT installed a beefier Tremec five-speed and 3.27:1 rear axle gears for neck-snapping acceleration. The “Cobra R” is intentionally stripped of unnecessary components, including the air conditioning system, radio, rear seat, some soundproofing materials and fog lamps. Suspension components include Eibach springs, Koni adjustable shocks, and firmer bushings, five-spoke wheels measuring 17 x 9 inches and 255 / 45-17 B.F. Goodrich Comp T/As contributing to the competition-level handling. Other race-oriented pieces include a fiberglass hood, 20-gallon fuel cell and radiators for engine oil and power steering fluid. All 250 of the 1995 COBRA R cars were painted Crystal White and fitted with the Saddle cloth interior.
