Vehicle Detail
Time to pass on some of my toys. We've had vanagon since mid-80s(86 I think). Got it with around 50,000 miles. Wife drove it several years until she got a new van in 1990. It had around 95,0000 miles. I put rings in it and drove it off and on for several years, then it just sat. I eventually bought a new 1.9 short-block from parts place in pontiac and over a couple years put it together with a rebuilt 1.6 mechanical head from parts place, and installed it in the vanagon. This also meant new oil pump, rebuilt starter, new timing belt and pulley, new muffler, and exhaust, new vacuum pump, new glow plugs, rebuilt injectors. This was about 100,000 miles. Since then I've driven it a couple hundred miles every summer or so-used it as camper. Had problems with leaking seals in the injection pump(old seals don't like the new diesel) so I got the pump rebuilt last fall by Performance Diesel. It added power and accelleration. It cruises easily at 60 now and will accellerate up hills in 4th gear. If you've ever driven one of these slugs you won't believe the difference. Otherwise vehicle is original. Body is solid but there are some spots developing. The middle seat is missing. I took it out years ago and have no idea what happened to it. I do have another vanagon with the leatherette seat that I would sell separately if buyer is interested. The seats are brown corduroy. Some of the vinyl is missing off the inside trim. I've put gauges on it and am fiddling still to get the auxilary temperature gauge to work with the existing gauge. I've done away with the glow plug relay circuit and have a relayed switch so that I can manually activate the glow plugs. I drove it this winter(first winter driving in about 20 years on the vanagon) and it started easily with temperature in the single digits.. Vehicle has 4 speed manual transmission. Got about 25 mpg in winter but I think it could improve with timing adjustment on the injection pump. This vehicle isn't for you if you don't have some older diesel experence because they require attention and TLC. I've got too many other projects and would like this to go to a good home where it will be used regularly and loved. $500 deposit via paypal within 3 days, balance due in cash when you pick it up.
