Vehicle Detail

Up for auction is this very nice condition 1968 Chevelle SS 396 4 speed, possi-traction coupe. Numbers matching or period correct automobile. Butternut Yellow with Tuxedo Black This car was built in Baltimore MD. Purchased new by its original owner in Salem VA from Goodwin Chevrolet Corp. I am only the third owner of this very well preserved real 138 code Super Sport survivor, with rare roller tach. It has the original protect-o-plate, owners manual, dealer pouch, brochure, locks and original style keys. The car had only the two tone painting with the double pinstripe, as found on the Deluxe models. It didn’t have the SS stripe package, which was optional at the time. It did have all the correct exterior badges. A real “street sleeper“. The engine is a fresh 272, 396 Hi-Perf. block, decked and bored .030 over. Finished compression is around 10.87 to 1. Crane Cams Extreme Energy 544-544 gear driven hydraulic. Heads chosen for the street are the oval port style, also shaved and modified for unleaded fuel. Chambers are around 96cc with trash can lids, Comp cam springs, retainers and keepers hold it all together. Also used to insure a tight fit was a set of steel shim copper coated head gaskets. A forged steel crank, cut., polished and nitrited brings up the bottom end. Cleavite 77’s with grooves for long storage and extra capacity, controls the oil. Melling high volume pump with high pressure kit, supplies the blood pressure. Capacity is around 8 quarts with the Milodon 7qt stock style pan and the new Fram Racing spin on oil filter conversion that MUST use the Fram HP 1, 1qt high pressure filter. Cruising and idling at around 60 psi. Engine runs cool at 180 degrees with large capacity, 3 row radiator. All the horses flow through a set of Competition headers. A mandrel bent aluminized 3” sewer pipe exhaust system with full 1 piece mandrel bent 3” tail pipes from Pypes Performance Exhaust keeps the flow all the way out. Drive line consists of a new clutch, pressuer plate and throw out bearing, matched to a GM flywheel with the bevel still on the edge after the surface procedure. All powered through a nice tight 4 speed tranny with the original Muncie shifter. Drive shaft was also trued, balanced and reworked with a special Spicer slip yoke to accommodate a trans swap for the M-22 coarse spline, and the 400 automatic. Even better, all this is funneled into the original 12 bolt rear end with the infamous Eaton 4 series carrier Possi traction unit. The rear still has the original red plastic possi warning on the fill plug. New windshield, tinted and shaded is already installed correctly. Beautiful frames front and back. The glass is installed with urethane ribbon, not just the sloppy floater method. All new clips are in place. All other glass is original to the car and in excellent condition. All chrome and stainless is original to the car and is nice condition as well. Floors are very nice. Only repairs made to left and right front pans. All the seams are finished cosmetically, and sealed correctly. Rear seat pans are solid and original. Trunk is also solid and original with no repairs necessary. The overall body condition is very, very nice. ALL original GM sheet metal is still on the car. Only minor repairs were made to the typical problem areas. No full or half panel replacements were necessary. Frame and mounts are also in very good condition. You can still read the numbers on the mounts. Also, purchased and installed, new door panels, with the original “SS396”emblems ,new seat covers, headliner, package tray, insulation, carpet and a very nice factory console. It still has the original insulation panel that goes behind the rear seat. The AM radio speaker is still in the dash. The rims are original to the car. The tires, brakes, wheel cylinders and are new. The body is rust proofed. The exterior is 4 full wet coats of 2 part epoxy primer in correct red oxide. The jambs are cut in correctly and cleared. All paint systems are by Du Pont. Body shadow coated for final blocking. Car has been in climate controlled storage for over seven years and firmly believe it was NOT an outdoor weathered car, before I got it. No rust, not dents, no scratches anywhere. The car was for prepped paint Ca. style. All dry blocking no water. This procedure is very time consuming. If you really think that "Foose" can do it in a week, think again. The body has 4 full wet coats of base color. It is then dry blocked again. 4 more coats of color. Blocked again and two more color coats before 4 coats of clear. Dry blocking clear is very tedious ,but the end result gives you a much finer “petina” and a finish that is much truer to the era. The car was a very rare find in its condition for its age. I was very pleased to find the typical problem areas in good shape. Thus keeping as much of the original full body panels as possible. These cars are highly sought after and bring a very high market value, some in excess of $55K. You can see and appreciate my decisions for the work I have done or chose not to do to add to your piece of mind in keeping this car in as an original appearance as possible. New employment has left me NO time to go any further. Not enough hours in the day to do anything. I'm sure I missed something in the description. Feel free to email with any questions. On Feb-23-12 at 14:28:37 PST, seller added the following information: This should be all the pics that everyone is asking for. Wet down the under carriage for definition for pics. Under carriage is how it came out of the factory, no additional paint or under coating, SHE'S NAKED. Interior was professionally done, it is original black, yes it is dusty, no time to detail, seat belts are black, dirty from the build. All colors, interior and exterior design, are original to the car. Hard pressed to find a car at this age and caliber to be in as an original and unmolested condition. No disappointments.
