Vehicle Detail

1966 Mercedes Benz 250 SE VIN: 10801410005245 By the summer’s end back in 1989 Salvatore Occhino knew it was time for a change. He’d owned his still-pristine 1960 Mercedes 220 sedan for more than a decade, but now a newer four-door was starting to make sense. Driving along Auburn’s Auto Row everyday on the way to work, this gorgeous 1966 250 SE had caught his eye. For several weeks it had been parked there, highlighting the front row at Marque Motors and he knew immediate action was needed because it would not be available for long. As a practical, “old world” man, Mr. Occhino felt that any replacement for his beloved 220 must possess a single, most important criteria: a factory four-on-the-floor. Even in ‘66 this would be a challenge as most folks opted for the luxury of an automatic transmission over the sportiness of a stick shift in their Benz sedans. When he was told the Mercedes was a European Model and had been imported from his ancestral Italy, it was obviously too good to pass up! Where would he ever find another with these european headlamps and oversize fog lights still intact? On December 12th the deal was consummated with a straight across trade and Salvatore had his new car! He promptly christened her “Giulia”, installed the “United States” and “Italia” grille badges from off the old 220 and then fussed over the Mercedes, always giving it regular attention. He would own her for the rest of his life. Several weeks ago “Giulia” came to us in hopes of finding a lucky new owner. What you see here in my un-retouched photos is a remarkably nice, original euro-car. If you have questions or would like to inspect the Mercedes before the auction ends, please call me to set a meeting time. My name is Mark Thompson and my direct number is (206)914-1173. CONDITION: Little has been changed since Mr. Occhino bought the car all those years ago. The factory odometer is still in Kilometers and shows 18,518 (I have no way to know what the actual miles are as it is a five-digit counter). Those European head lights and fog lamps are still present. Mr. Occhino was nearly sixty when he purchased the Mercedes and we don't believe he allowed anyone else to drive it, hence the very, very decent overall condition. The photos really do tell this boulevard cruiser’s story far better than anything I can write here. The exterior is in remarkably nice, original shape. Though it's had a respray, the deep black paint holds quite a shine. A quick glance and you’ll see all the glass is good with no cracks or chips (the window cranks are a bit sticky however). Hop in, allow a few seconds for turn-over and the bullet-proof inline six cylinder starts immediately, even when cold. Besides the system on your vintage Corvette how many other vehicles had factory fuel injection in 1966? Yes, it makes all the difference! The four-speed transmission shifts great and the clutch appears strong. I’ve made no attempt to update the remarkably decent stock engine compartment and trunk. Rust? Please, this Mercedes hates body rust and you’ll be hard pressed to find much of anything here to worry about; look at my shots of the underside and bottom of the door. Yes, the Puget Sound area is famous for rain, but our winter roads are rarely ever salted. At most we’ll only have one or two days of light snow each year and then everyone panics and just stays home. Climb over, under and throughout this car - you’ll come up smiling as factory undercoating has kept most of it quite solid. I doubt it ever saw many winter roads anyway. About the only repair suggested is to replace the muffler (it’s worn and does not get the job done). Please look again at the interior pictures. You’ll find nearly untouched, original german upholstery here. I’m quite impressed with the condition of the dash gauges, too. They seem as clear and bright as the day this rig left the plant more than four decades ago! The radio and the temperature control system function as they should. I even came across one of Mr. Occhino’s Italian Opera tapes still in the cassette player the first time driving the car. I’ll pass it along to you and make certain the glove box contains the original factory owner’s manual and storage sleeve as well. The headliner is intact and decent, but has a number of small holes. I’d probably plan on replacing it down the road for cosmetic reasons. Same goes for the carpet set. It’s original and has come apart from age in the rear passenger area. The front panels have been protected with mats and are in much better condition as is the transmission hump and tunnel sections. The interior wood trim has lacquer checking, but is still very presentable with a great vintage patina. There’s a five-inch section missing at the bottom corner below the passenger’s windshield as well as some pieces that have deteriorated around the right rear passenger door window. Both could be easily replaced. PLEASE BID WITH CONFIDENCE and know that you are purchasing a very nice car from a respected Ebay seller. I want you to be happy with your purchase (and with me) and that’s the main goal! Please don’t be upset if I miss a minor flaw or you’re required to spend a small amount on some unforeseen problem! No vintage used vehicle is ever perfect. Note: We will NEVER, EVER “shill” or falsely "bump-up" an auction (a violation of eBay rules and also Federal Law). Because of the amount of money involved in buying a vehicle, we require that new Ebay members with a feedback history of five or fewer transactions or ANY negative feedback call or email before placing a bid. If I don’t have this initial contact, your bids may be cancelled. The phone number to talk directly to me, as outlined above, is 206/914-1173. Please feel free to call any time during the auction. My name is MARK THOMPSON. TERMS OF SALE: You’re encouraged to check the photos over closely and call me with any questions BEFORE you place a bid! Come by and drive the Mercedes at our Auburn, WA location during business hours if you’re in the area. DEALERS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME TO BID AS WELL! Additionally, we reserve the right to end the auction early if the car is no longer for sale or an acceptable offer has been agreed upon. A nonrefundable $500 deposit is due within 24 hours of the auction’s end if you’re the winning bidder. The remaining balance is due by cash or certified funds within seven days unless prior arrangements have been made with us. Remember, you are bidding to buy and I fully expect the winning bidder to fulfill their Ebay contract! You are not bidding to hold, inspect or then come test-drive the Benz later! You’re more than welcome to do this before the auction ends. If you decide to have the car shipped home, there are numerous vehicle transport companies to choose from. We ship vehicles regularly and I'd suggest that you get several transport bids from carriers at the www.U-ship.com website. The zip code for pick-up would be 98028 (Kent, WA) to get an instant on-line quote. The shipping of the Benz and company chosen are the responsibility of the BUYER. Please be sure you inquire with them regarding insurance coverage on the vehicles they transport. I’m always happy to store your purchase free of charge at my location for up to two weeks after the auction ends assuming full payment has been made. A Few Additional Terms and Requirements: The Buyer will be responsible for the licensing requirements in their state of residence. If you live here in Washington we’ll need to collect the 9.8% sales tax, title preparation, transfer and any registration fees. Because the car is advertised and for sale locally, we reserve the right to notify bidders and cancel this auction early if it’s no longer available for sale online. The Mercedes is being sold as-is, where-is, with no warranty expressed or implied. All information described above is based on the observed condition when the listing was placed. I've done my very best to describe the vehicle as honestly as possible. The State of Washington shall have exclusive jurisdiction over all disputes. Venue shall be exclusively in King County. The final contract signed between both buyer and seller shall be binding. The final signed contract and terms thereof shall govern the sale. All disputes arising out of or relating to this auction, any negotiations, the signed agreement, or to the breach, enforcement or interpretation thereof, shall be resolved by binding arbitration in Washington, in accordance with the terms contained in the final sale agreement and under the laws of the State of Washington. Whew! Don’t you just love legalese?
