Thanks to Honda's IMA: Integrated Motor Assistance hybrid program this Civic achieves an estimated 40mpg city 45 mpg highway! This Civic uses a 13 liter engine for primary power with an additional electric motor for extra power and efficiency.
The theory behind IMA is to save and store the energy used during braking (known as regenerative braking). Brake pads and rotors last much longer which means less trips to the mechanic for regular maintenance! The energy is stored in the hybrid battery and assists the gasoline engine when accelerating, reducing the stress on the gasoline engine and improving gas mileage significantly.
Additionally, vehicles equipped with IMA can shut off the engine automatically during idle and automatically re-start quickly when the driver removes their foot from the brake pedal: don't waste fuel while waiting at stop lights, the car shuts itself off and restarts itself before your foot even gets back to the accelerator!
This Civic comes with an automatic continuously variable transmission that changes step-lessly through an infinite number of gear rations, another feature that provides improved fuel economy by enabling the engine to run at its most efficient RPM's (revolutions per minute) throughout the range of vehicle speeds.
THIS VEHICLE DOES NOT NEED TO BE CHARGED! It is powered by gasoline just like any typical car. The vehicle takes care of charging itself through aforementioned regenerative braking and gas motor assistance.
GREAT ON MAINTENANCE. This vehicle is equipped with a timing chan, superior to the alternative: the timing belt. Timing belts need to be changed every ~60,000 miles (costly) chains last much longer (typically the life of the engine). Honda didn't switch from timing belts to timing chains in their gasoline powered Civics until 2006, luckily they equipped their hybrid vehicles with timing chains since 2001.
This vehicle drives well with no perceivable problems. It tracks straight, no vibrations or brake pulsations, auto engine stop and regenerative braking work well. It has the very inconsiderable delay when engaging first gear when cold, characteristic of all Honda continuously variable transmissions. 1 owner accident-free car.
