Vehicle Detail

Another great find! I have recently semi retired from my career of 30 years, have always been a car fanatic and love restoring old cars, typically European cars. To fill the void and hopefully make some additional income I have starting scouring auctions (with the help of a dealer friend) to find cars of interest to me that need a bit of tlc to bring back to life and pass on to someone else. As with all of the cars I have sold I almost hope they don't sell so I can keep them and drive them myself, this one is no exception! I found this car at an auction, it was in need of just a little TLC, I am pretty sure it was a dealer trade in and needed just a few too many little things for the dealer to repair and still make a profit on it so he sold it at auction. When I got this car the electric top would not operate, if you are looking at other 3 series convertibles you will know this is a common problem, turns out it was simply a misaligned motor and hydraulic struts that needed to be replaced, once that was removed and repaired the top was reset and everything operates as it should, again it is pretty rare for the tops in these to be fully functional, this is a big plus. The interior was remarkably clean, I am a fanatic for cleanliness, typically I completely gut the interior of every car but with this one it was not necessary, I still gave it a good scrubbing but it was pretty good to begin with. The rear seat bottom was duct taped together, this has been recovered and looks great, the rear seat backs are also in great shape (also unusual for these cars) The door panel centers have been recovered, not professionally but they look pretty good, definitely better than most this age with the leather pulling away from the panel and leaving big gaps. The front seats are in great shape, the drivers seat shows some fading but the leather is great, no rips, tears etc, a little leather dye and they would look like new. Overall the interior is in great shape, no cracks in the dash, no stains, no tears, the carpet is clean, no wear signs etc. There are some BMW floor mats with pretty good wear, I will include them, you can see them in the trunk picture, they are the reason the carpet is in such good shape. The only problem with the interior (actually the entire car) is that the headliner for the top is missing, to me it is not a problem, I thought it might make the interior noisy but I have driven this car extensively on the highway and it is quiet, very little wind noise, surprisingly so even without the headliner. This will most likely be a fair weather car, driven mostly with the top down so personally I would not worry about it but if you decide you want the headliner you can purchase them for under $250 here on ebay and from what I understand installation is fairly simple. The exterior of the car is in great shape, it has its fair share of dings and scratches but the paint appears completely original and in great shape, has a good shine, no fading anywhere and is very presentable. The wheels are in great shape, a bit of minor scuffing in a couple spots, a bit of fading but overall in great shape, the picture of the one wheel is indicative of all of them. The tires are non matching (fronts and rears match though) but lots of good tread and shouldn't be a concern for a couple years. Mechanically the car seems perfect, it is a 5 speed which is the only way to go in these, clutch feels great, no strange noises, everything works, I don't know of anything this car needs mechanically. The engine compartment is extremely clean, I did nothing other than hose it down which in my mind is a good sign of probably a well maintained car, it sure drives like one. I have driven about 500 miles on this car, starts every time without hesitation, idles perfectly, temperature never varies a bit. Don't let the miles scare you, I bought my son a 2000 323i with only 62,000 miles on it a couple years ago, turns out it was not well maintained, we had about a year of sorting out all the little problems with the car, finally after many hours and $$$ later his low mileage car runs as well as this one with over twice the mileage! These engines (entire cars actually) are built to last many miles, I would not even start to worry about anything on this car for at least another 100,000 miles, point is with these cars finding one without any mechanical problems is more important than the mileage. Feel free to ask any questions, I am sure there are a lot of things I forgot to mention If you are in the area feel free to call to look at/drive the car, I am sure it will not dissapoint, it does everything as it should. On Feb-01-12 at 19:01:10 PST, seller added the following information:Forgot to mention the top, the canvas is In good shape but the top corners above the rear bow have been repaired. It is not perfect but looks like it should hold for quite some time. I have included a picture of the repair.
