Vehicle Detail
Car must go! See many more photos and read a more in-depth description of the car on our web site. For sale is original, screen-used, Disney-built Herbie the Love Bug #12. The car was used by Disney in the films Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo (1977) and Herbie Goes Bananas (1980). This is an original movie car, or star car as some may call it. Own a piece of motion picture history! A real Hollywood collectible that's perfect for any museum, whether it be automotive or film prop. Not just a car but a true film collectible. Disney used many different Beetles to play the character "Herbie" in its popular franchise of films. Each did a unique set of tricks, stunts, or gags and was given a number to define it from the other cars. This particular car was given the number 12, hence its nickname "Herbie #12." This particular car is a 1962 Volkswagen Beetle with a factory sunroof. There are only about 23 original Herbies from the classic series of four films known to still exist, and there are only 7 in the world quite like this one. A rare vehicle, indeed! The car is outfitted in its Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo racing gear, complete with external gas cap, Carello fog light, Goodyear radial tires, 14X6" wheels, roll bar, custom Disney high-back seats, and "Trans France Race" logos and stickers. It is precisely as it appeared in the film in every conceivable detail. The car's most famous scenes and modifications are the following. In Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo, it is most well-known for being the car that drives out of the pond after getting knocked into the water by an adversary. The doors open and water comes pouring out. To achieve this, the entire lower portion of the interior was lined with fiberglass to hold the water in until "Action!" was shouted. When restoring the car, the obvious decision to leave this fiberglass intact was made. Removing it would only erase the car's history, and it being in place really adds to the "cool factor." For Herbie Goes Bananas, Herbie #12 was used in the epic bullfight scene. The rear clip of the car was cut off and a counterweight added, allowing the car to do wheel stands on command. The hood was also rigged to open and close hydraulically (look for the car "biting" the airplane's tail during the film's exciting conclusion). The car is also rigged with a remote that can beep the horn and flash the headlights, which is a lot of fun at car shows. It's not just exciting that the car was in the movie, but it's that the stars were in the car! While many of the stunt cars and "second unit" vehicles never interacted with the celebrities during filming, Herbie #12 got lucky in both movies. World-renowned actors Dean Jones, Don Knotts, Joaquin Garay III, Harvey Korman, and Cloris Leachman all have personally sat and acted in this very vehicle. Sit on the same seats that the stars once sat on! Another neat thing about Herbie #12 is that in both films it was featured in many promotional items. It appears in the lobby card set, on the cover of many books, VHS / DVD movie covers, a puzzle, and so on. You may have noticed interior shots throughout Herbie Goes Bananas of a car that has a plate screwed over the radio hole and the turn signal arm on the wrong side of the column. That's this very car! Naturally, I have left these oddities just as they were. After filming of Herbie Goes Bananas wrapped the cars were auctioned off by Disney and several were purchased by a stunt driver from the film. Herbie #12 was one of them. They were all left to deteriorate for many years, though thankfully each has been rescued and restored at the current time. Herbie #12's restoration was a long and tedious one. Over 800 hours of work went into the process of turning it into what it is today. It was clear from the beginning that in order for the car to stay the movie star that it is it would need to keep all its original parts. It would have been easy to replace all the fenders, the doors, even the entire body with new parts. Though it would not really be the same car any more, would it? All of Herbie #12's body and chassis parts are the originals with the exception of the rear fenders and decklid, which were cut in half to do the wheel stands mentioned earlier (the original parts have been kept and come with the car). The car was left as untouched as possible, and any and all Disney modifications were left intact (the purpose behind some of them is still a mystery!). It also still has its original Disney high back seats, made specifically for the Herbies in the films. It is one cool car, and you could marvel and ponder over it for hours. The car is fully road worthy and fit for driving. I've personally driven it as much as 8 hours in a single day. It is currently powered by a 1776cc engine with dual Kadron carburetors that was installed last year and has less than 1,000 miles on it. This car is loaded with prestige and is in the same league as an original KITT Knight Rider Firebird, Dukes of Hazzard Charger, Batmobile, Ghostbusters Ecto 1, Back to the Future DeLorean, etc. Car has a clean title ready to be signed over to any new buyer. The car also comes with my hand-written work log which details the 800+ hours of restoration work that went into it, as well as all my photos of the restoration process. Buyer is to arrange all shipping and transportation of the car. I will make myself available to assist in the pick up of the vehicle. Any and all shippings costs are NOT included in the sale price and should be considered an additional but necessary expense. I am willing to sell to overseas buyers but, again, cannot be expected to arrange for the car's transportation. This is not a flawless, Concord quality show car but all around is extremely nice and easily an 8 or 9 out of 10. You'll love this car! Thanks for looking. On Nov-28-11 at 18:55:25 PST, seller added the following information: Remnants of the original stripes, intentionally left in tact. Solid bar shocks that kept the wheels from sagging during the wheel stand. The original rear decklid and rear fenders. They are the only parts that were considered too far gone to restore. The rest of the body is all original. The "wheelie bar." This was bolted right to the transmission where the engine would normally go and allowed the car to perform wheel stands. This plate was screwed down over the fuel tank hole, in place of the tank. Possibly to allow young Joaquin Garay III to fit in the trunk for certain scenes in Herbie Goes Bananas? An original tail light housing with fake "rust" paint from Herbie Goes Bananas. Various documentation and Certificate of Authenticity. Herbie #12 as seen in Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo. The car as seen during its most famous appearance in Herbie Goes Bananas. On Dec-03-11 at 03:51:11 PST, seller added the following information: Actual mileage unknown. As stated above, car does have clear title in hand and there is no lien on the car.
