A 1978 Mercedes Benz Coupe 300CD. A rare find: this Benz coupe is fitted with a four-speed manual gearbox - it is a one-of-a-kind car! This series of car (W123) was the last of Mercedes Benz's handbuilt autos. They were produced until 1985 and offer some of the most reliable, safe, and economical motoring available. This particular car's exterior is finished in 'Milan Brown' with a 'Tobacco' MB Tex interior. A structurally sound, good daily driver that needs a touch of exterior cosmetic work. As it is fitted with a four-speed, this diesel is not only faster (relatively) than comparable models, but it also excels in economy. The car has been re-painted in its past and one of the previous owners had fitted the rear window with a 'mirror' reflective tint to keep the interior cooler. This top-of-the-line coupe is still a head turner and a great daily driver. This car has a real open air feeling when driven with the sunroof and all the windows open due to its pillarless design. THE GOOD POINTS: - Bullet-proof and reliable design. - Very easy to maintain. - Strong motor with good oil pressure. - The car cruises extremely well on the highway (70mph+). - It is fitted with a 4 speed manual gearbox (a rarity for the diesel coupes!). - Equipped with a sunroof. - Recently passed Virginia's state inspection. - No structural rust on the car! - The interior is exceptionally clean and in very good condition. - The seats have no tears and the springs are supportive. - Carpets are in very good condition. - Dashboard is free of any serious cracking (small 1/2" mark near the demister vent). - Original warning lights and buzzers are functional. - Included are original manuals, first aid kit and tool roll. THE NOT-SO GOOD POINTS: - Synchromesh on second gear requires double declutching on a downshift. - The cruise control is not operating. - The right rear wing's paint (below the moulding) has been touched-up with a spray can. - There is some surface rust showing on both rear wings and boot/trunk lid. - Although originally fitted with a climate control system, the air conditioning compressor has been removed. The cooling and heating system are not functioning (the demister fan however, is operational). As a comparison, here is market pricing from NADA's website for this model: Pricing Original MSRP Low Retail Average Retail High Retail $21,472 $4,825 $7,150 $10,350 Remember, this car is being sold with no reserve ! This coupe has plenty of potential; it has been left in an 'as-is' state to allow the new owner to decide what to do with the car. One option would to be to re-fit the compressor and equip the car as originally sold. (note: Mercedes used a General Motors compressor which is readily available at a reasonable cost). An alternative would be to use the car as a basis for a 'Euro-coupe': fitting the european headlamps and bumpers and exchanging the climate control system for the simpler heating system. Either way, this fine motor car may be enjoyed while carrying out any of the tasks. One could even use this for a BioDiesel conversion. A great find.
