Vehicle Detail
This '85 Toyota 'Cruiser is a beast with huge personality. It’s in great shape with no major work ever needed/done. 196,000 original miles, original paint, upholstery and mechanical. P/O converted to dual-battery system. New carb, generator, thermostat, front windshield, AM/FM/CD/MP3 and rear speakers (June ’10), new battery (July’11). Engine is original 4.2 liter straight inline 6-cylinder, tranny is tight, 4WD fully functional with 2H, 4H and 4L and outside locking front hubs. Power steering, brakes, front/rear A/C and Heat and headliner is in great shape. Front (intermittent) and rear wipers/washers work, headlight washers, skid plate, chrome front/rear bumpers/trim and 17" rims, heavy-duty front black brush guard, fog lights, original tool kit under driver side seat, original Owners Manual and Warranty booklet. PRO’S: This ‘Cruiser is a tank, built for running under any condition and getting you there. It is not built for speed. This is one of those rare vehicles that a roll of duct tape and a tin can will repair about anything in a pinch. If you don’t know about the ’85 Landcruiser, you’re probably a bit confused about the reserve amount on a 26-year old vehicle. If you do know about them, then you know why these things are as popular with collectors as they are. This thing runs. And runs. And runs. Glass is all good, no leaks, rubber weatherproofing is tight and in good shape. CON’S: There are gas pigs and there are gas hogs. This is a hog, about 10 mpg, roughly $70 to fill with mid-grade at $3.88/gallon. New carb needs adjusting, brakes should be redone, needs a front-end alignment, the dash has a passenger side crack (see photo) and the front (door) speakers should be replaced (they’re old and sound tinny). Tires are good but off-road tires probably decrease mpg by 50%. Driver seat has wear-tear along front edge of seat. I may do the carb and brakes this weekend. The exterior clear coat is starting to wear, but diligent exterior care (wash/wax) keeps it shining. Body has a few dings/dimples from its 26-year life, but no dents/body work. Add-on front brush bar is very heavy-duty and P/O hit something with it causing slight bend in left front side (see photo). Current condition: Starts, runs, stops. Always. Engine temp and other vitals are always dead-on. Oil pressure gauge has a mind of its own…probably needs new sensor or cleaning. Everything on it works…w/s wipers front and rear window, A/C blows ice cold, heater will melt rubber, horn, interior/exterior/running lights. No discernable rust. Floorboards are heavy-duty and solid. Bottom line: If I had the time I’d do a complete restoration of this beast and sell it for $20k, but I no longer have the time or inclination. My daughter bought it in Missoula in June, 2005, has put about 1,000 miles on it over the last two years and is reluctant to sell it but can’t afford two vehicles. It’s got outstanding bones and is, from everything I can determine, all original equipment (except for brush guard, stereo and an add-on hard-wired digital P/A system).
