Vehicle Detail

This is a 1958 Pontiac Chieftain. This is the only year for this body style and the only Chieftain with the 370 cubic inch V-8. Beginning in 1959 the model was retooled as the Catalina. I have not been able to find accurate data for the number of Chieftains produced in 58 but a quick google search will show you there aren't many for sale. This is a truly scarce model and year and the last of a great line. The paint scheme for this one is a perfect match for the era it represents - Route 66 turquoise and white with matching interior. The car was fully restored in 2001, as attested to by an engraved marker on the engine. The mileage on the odometer is 5246 and I believe that may be miles driven since restoration, but that is only speculation. I can say that she starts right up, drives and handles smooth and gets quite a bit of punch from the stock engine. Almost everything is original except the front end, which I've been told came out of a 1972 Pontiac, hence the disc brakes on front. The transmission is original and shifts smooth and quiet. What does not work is the original radio. It is there but does not function. I am told it is not expensive to repair and that there are shops that specialize in that. It hasn't been important to me because there is a modern stereo in the glove box. The wipers don't work. The (air-powered) motor is there but there are also electric replacements available for this model. It hasn't been an issue for me because I drove it only in good weather. The right brake light is inoperative. Definitely not a fuse because there aren't any fuses for this model. The steering wheel is not original. It is from a 1957 Chevrolet. The horn centerpiece is a custom fit Pontiac Chieftain emblem and looks better than the original. The original steering wheel is in the trunk. The front end has recently been redone and is solid. I also had the engine tuned up and some other minor work done on it. This is a beautiful car but I no longer have room in the garage for it and I do not want to continue paying storage for it. My loss is your gain as this car is guaranteed to turn heads and earn smiles and thumbs-up. The original paint scheme was MKK, which translates to Starlight Yellow/Sheffield Gray. The undercarriage is painted black. Very clean and no rust showing anywhere except on the mufflers. It is a dual exhaust. The trunk deck is painted black, uncarpeted, and solid. The weatherstripping on doors, windows and trunk is intact and supple. Presumably it was all redone during the resto. I also grabbed a shot of the front end where it is shimmed. The mechanic who has done work on it for me is the owner/operator of an auto restoration shop and he has rated the vehicle 90 to 95% complete. If I was going to get serious about entering it in shows I would put new carpet in (there are no stains, rips tears or worn spots, except as shown in the photo, along the door edge) and clean up the mess on the inside of the door. I guess I'd want to get the old radio repaired and add the electric wipers or send the old vacuum job out for repair. And detail the engine a bit. But make no mistake, this is a jaw dropper. Two days to end of auction......
