For all you Hogan’s Heroes fans, the Thing’s predecessors were used by the German military in WW II. Then they were known as the Kubelwagen, translated as “bucket car.” People will often take the civilian example, add headlamp black our covers, towing hook and eye, map light, four rifle mounting accessories and throw in a spade and an axe and boom, your “in the army now.” Purely a recreational vehicle in 1973, you can drop the convertible top, remove the doors and collapse the windshield………….try doing that with your Ford Explorer. Original factory colors available were white, tan, black and army green. Our featured version was produced in Europe between 1969 to 1972. They were only sold in the States from 1973 to 1974 but you could grab a new one down Acapulco way from 1973 to 1980. (Think striped paint application, running boards and oh yes, a surrey top). Our Thing is motivated by the reliable 4 cylinder stock engine and is mated to a manual 4 speed. She was treated to a fresh paint application back in 2008 in a whimsical canary yellow theme. A new canvass top and interior seating covers were also fitted in 2008. She also benefited from a customary detailing both cosmetically and mechanically. She rolls on four new tires, fires up quickly, shifts as she should and brings smiles and waves parading around the village. A Clarion radio was added to play Beach Boys “Surfin USA” and you can tie a pair of surf boards to the back bumper. So if you would like to own a fun oddity, one that people to this day point at and asked, “does it float,” then it’s time to get your Thing. By the way, It ‘ floats “ the same as any other 2,000 pound car would. Terms and Conditions of Sale We take time to carefully describe each vehicle and include a substantial number of photos.
