Vehicle Detail
The 1960 Cadillac is one of the most recognizable vehicles on four wheels. It's luxurious opponents & BIG FIN styling made this car a hit with everyone from Elvis to JFK. After 50 years this Caddy has become a true American Icon! DESCRIPTION- I purchased this Caddy for my Dad, as a restoration project. Like many people, the 1960 holds a special place in his heart. We looked for a long time before finding this car. He wanted to start with a vehicle that was as close to un-touched as possible & believe me... there aren't many left. We were very fortunate to discover this one right down the road in Athens GA, where it has spent it's entire life. The car was totally original & complete. After we made our deal, I was able to drop in a new battery & drive her home. Dad has since invested a lot of time & money into the car but has recently found a convertible which gets all of his attention so he is reluctantly letting this ultra RARE 60 Series Special Fleetwood, Bubble Top, 4-door / no post, go to a new home. I say ultra rare because most 1960 Cadillacs were 62 Series which was the bottom of the line, base model. Or Sedan DeVilles which was middle of the road. But the 60 Series, like this one, was the tip top of the line. Lots of extra trim. Lots of extra options. And lots more money. Alot of work was done to get this car into DRIVEABLE project shape. You can cruise in her right now! BODY- The body on this big finned beauty is in very restorable condition or perfect rat rod shape just as it is. As soon as Dad got it home he had the entire car soda blasted to remove any surface rust & reveal anything hiding underneath the paint. Luckily the car turned out to be nearly as solid as we originally asessed. This car was originally white & was repainted black at some point. All of the paint has been removed thanks to the blasting. The metal under the gray primer is clean & smooth. However, the soda blasting did open up various pin holes in the sheetmetal here & there. It also revealed a fair amount of bondo in the passenger side rear quarter. After the blasting Dad had the entire car sprayed with a coat of quality primer to protect the metal during the restoration process. He had a local man install a lower quarter patch panel to repair the bondo / rust area. The man didn't do the greatest job so there is work left to do in that area. Bondo was also found in the lower front fender on the passenger side. That area has not been reworked yet. There are various pin holes in the some of the lower door skins but very minor. The door bottoms all appear solid. The rocker panels appear solid though we have not removed the large rocker molding to inspect the metal underneath. All of the door jams appear solid. All of the door hinge mounting points are rust free & solid. The trunk weather stripping lip is rust free & solid. The rear inner fenders are rust free & solid. The rear package tray is rust free & solid. The trunk pan does have 4 or 5 quarter sized holes but the surrounding metal is thick, strong & solid. The trunk lid itself appears rust free & solid. However, the trunk lid extension does have several pin holes opened up by the blasting. The tail panel is rust free & solid. The tail fins are perfectly straight & rust free. There is no rust or filler around the rear glass. The passenger side rear quarter appears very solid & free from filler. Both rear wheel fender skirts are totally free from filler & completely solid. The driver's side front fender appears solid. The hood is very solid. The front inner fenders are rust free. The radiator core support is rust free. The firewall is rust free. The wiper cowl is rust free. I have not removed the carpet but the front floor pans feel solid & appear solid from under the vehicle. The rear pans are getting weak & will need to be replaced during a restoration process... but they are perfectly fine as they are for a rat rod or retro sled. Your feet aren't going to fall through. There is no rust around the windshield & the roof skin & supports are totally rust free, straight & solid. I can find no evidence that this Caddy has ever been wrecked. There are shallow dents & dings here & there but overall the metal is very straight. The entire frame is straight & solid. All of the door latches & locks work as they should with no droop. I have the original key which works all the door locks. The trunk lock cylinder is missing but does latch as it should. The trunk hinges are nice & tight. The hood hinges & latch are nice & tight. Though there is rust to repair should you decide to completely restore this car, it is minimal for this model. I know there are many many cars like this on the market that are claimed to be rust free, however, you never know what is hiding underneath that shiny paint. Poor body repair can & will cause a $40,000 car to need a complete body & paint restoration within a year or two. That is why Dad wanted this Caddy. He didn't want to spend 40 grand on a chance. He bought this car & had it blasted so that everything that needs repair is visible & once it's painted, it will stay painted. DRIVETRAIN- GM powered these big Caddys with a very powerful 425HP, 390CI big block V8. These land yachts turned some very impressive numbers during their time trails. This particular engine runs very well! We have not even replaced the tune-up parts yet the 390 just purrs. No smoke. No knocks. No ticks. No skips. No overheating. I drive this car often & have never had any trouble out of this engine. I did notice the valve cover gaskets leak a little but no major leaks anywhere. The 3 speed automatic transmission also performs just as it should & is a huge improvement over the 2-speed powerglides found in many classic GM's. That extra gear really helps this Caddy cruise comfortably. The rear end is quiet & nice & tight. Being a 60 Series, this car has working power steering. You would think that all Cadillacs would have came with that option but they did not. All of the steering & suspension components feel good. The car does not wander around. It holds the road well & Rides Like A Cadillac! The car has NOT been lowered. The four wheel power drum breaks stop like... drum breaks. After many replacement parts & much adjusting, they stop straight & true. No dipping or trying to jerk your arm off when stopping. However, I can't seem to keep air out of the lines. I have bled them several times & they work well for a while but eventually get spungy again. I purchased a replacement master cylinder but have not installed it as the breaks are working well right now. But I suspect you will want to install it before making this car your everyday driver. INTERIOR & GLASS- The interior is completely unrestored & original. It looks great for a rat rod. It has tons of character you just can't duplicate. Everything is there. The seat frames are solid & the padding is firm. They could simply be recovered for a (like new) look. The door panels are deteriorating but there. Dad removed the headliner & visors. They are in the trunk. The dash is un-cut. All of the gauges are working. The original radio is still in place. No one has butchered the dash installing a newer model. The dash pad is cracked like all of them. There are several companies who make a molded nylon dash cap for these cars which looks totally original & cost less than 200 bucks. Dad simply had not got to that point yet. The Autronic Eye is in place on the dash. This was Caddy's 1st attempt at daytime running lights... very cool! The front windshield has a star & single line crack on the passenger side. Fine for a driver. The driver door vent window has several cracks but it is flat glass & easy to replace or fine as/is for a driver. All four door glasses are perfect. No cracks or scratches. The rear windshield is also perfect. TRIM & OPTIONS- This being the top of the line Special Fleetwood, it has more trim & more options than the other models. All of the exterior trim is in place other than the small louvers which go on the side of the rear quarters, just in front of the tail lights. Dad planned to leave them off to smooth up the side veiw of the body but they aren't too hard to find should you want to replace them. Much of the exterior trim is in excellent condition & needs only polishing to be show quality. A few pieces will require some work to get to that point but all are usable. Both the front & rear grilles are in good condition. Both bumpers are very straight & solid. The original chrome finish is tired but looks good for a rat rod as it is. This car had working power windows in all four doors. The rears do need a little help but I would imagine that a good cleaning & lube of the regulators would cure that issue. The front seat is power & WORKS! As we said above, this car has working power steering. This Caddy is also equipped with a factory Frigidare air conditioning system! Everything is there with the exception of one line distribution block which mounts on the passenger side inner fender well. I have found these everywhere for under $100 but have not got to that point yet. The compressor & clutch feel good. I doubt it would take much to have this thing blowing icicles. TIRES & WHEELS- Last week Dad installed a brand spanking new set of narrow white wall radial tires on the factory steel wheels. When he had the tires off he cleaned & painted the wheels gloss black. He also installed a new set of bullet style chrome center caps with matching bullet style lug nuts. This REALLY sets the car off & gives it that RETRO feel. All four tires are balanced & still have the nipples on them. We have put maybe 20 miles on these tires. Three of the factory hubcaps are in the trunk & included with this auction. The fourth had a puncture in the metal so was disgarded. * This is a TRUE auction! * NO RESERVE! * Low starting bid! * You set the final price! * Bid what you think the Caddy is worth to you! * If you are the high bidder at the end... YOU WIN! TITLE- Georgia is a non-title state for vehicles older than 1986 & didn't even start issuing titles for new cars at all until 1961. That means that when this 60 Caddy was sold brand new, it was sold with no title. Therefore this Cadillac is exempt from title here & has no title. However, if you live in a state which requires a vehicle of this year to be titled, I WILL PROVIDE YOU WITH THE PAPERWORK YOU NEED TO GET YOUR TITLE QUICKLY & EASILY. This means the winning bidder will get a T-7 bill of sale, a state VIN inspection certificate, a gray GA registration card & an official letter from the state of GA confirming that this vehicle is exempt from title in this state. This paperwork will allow you to register the vehicle if you live in a non-title state such as Georgia. This paperwork will also automatically transfer into an actual title if you live in a state which requires a title on a vehicle of this year. I know some of you may be thinking that your tag office is hard to deal with & they just will not issue you a title if you don't have a title from the seller. I understand your hesitation but please believe me when I tell you... they have absolutely no choice but to issue you a title on this vehicle. Every County in every State is governed by the rules of the United States Department Of Transportation. The law says that if a vehicle is brought from a non-title state into a title requiring state & there is valid paperwork from the non-title state... the title requiring state MUST issue a clean, clear, title for that vehicle in the new state. It's the law & no matter how hard to deal with your tag office may be, they WILL issue you a title. There are several states which don't require titles on older vehicles. If there wasn't a unified law to cover these vehicles nationwide, people who moved from a non-title state to a new state may very well find that their very valuable classic automobiles couldn't be tagged in the their new home state. That would be absurd. I have sold classic vehicles to buyers all over the USA including Hawaii, several to Canada, a few to the UK, several to the Netherlands, one to Iceland, one to Spain & even a few to Australia. No one has had any trouble obtaining their title. You won't either. It is as easy as renewing your car tag. BIDDING- Please only bid what you are prepared to pay for this very rare Cadillac. Anyone wishing to inspect the car or have the car inspected is welcome to do so, but inspections must be completed prior to bidding & prior to auction's end. If you have little or no feedback please do not bid without first sending me your contact info through the ASK SELLER A QUESTION link in this listing so that we can speak on the phone prior to you placing your bid. I have encountered a couple of crooks/ scammers here on eBay who have cost me both time & money. This will no longer be tolerated so if you are not a SERIOUS buyer, PLEASE MOVE ON. All members with a genuine interest in this car are more than welcome to ask questions. All will be answered promptly. If you look at my feedback comments you will see that all of the REAL buyers have been very happy after dealing with me. Many of the comments are from people who have been very happy with classic cars, street rods, motorcycles & diesel trucks they have bought from me. I have sold to satisfied buyers all over the world! I know you will love this car. SHIPPING- Shipping costs & arrangements are the responsibility of the buyer. However, I have assisted buyers & their shippers in the pickup of several vehicles over the years. I can recommend several shippers who have performed well for buyers in the past or you can simply click on the link found right under the price in the upper section of this listing. The link will say (vehicle shipping quote available). If you click on that link, eBay will automatically give you quotes from 3 or 4 reputable automobile shippers. These quotes are generally very reasonable. I can work with them on pick-up times etc.. but you will have to make your own arrangements with them. I will work with you & your shipper so that they can get this car to you as fast & cost effectively as possible. However, no matter where you live,or how you choose to pay, the legal point of sell will be here in GEORGIA as that is where I live & where the vehicle is located. As always, you are more than welcome to pick this car up in person. I will be happy to pick you up at the Atlanta Airport or local Amtrac station, free of charge, if you would like to rent a U-Haul truck & trailer to haul the Caddy with then simply turn the U-Haul in at your local dealer when you get home. If you live close, you may choose to drive the vehicle home, however, the breaks do need some attention. These Big Finned Boats are getting harder to find everyday. The fact that it's a Caddy means it can have four doors & still be extremely cool! The bubble top, hard top design means NO post between the front & rear doors. Everyone can see & be seen in this classic beauty! Unlike other sedans, the roof of this Caddy has the same flowing lines as the rest of the body. In 1959 & 1960 Cadillac produced truly iconic cars. This Fleetwood is a real piece of American history! Whether you want a satin painted retro cruiser or a show room restored museum piece... this rare hard top is a great place to start. Plus you can drive it while you decide! Thanks for your interest in my Dad's car. I hope you win it! JD This vehicle is being sold as is, where is with no warranty, expressed written or implied.
