Vehicle Detail

Up for auction is a very Cool Original and Super Rare 1971 Olds Cutlass SX 455 4 Barrel(L32 HC) ......... a Rare vehicle for 1971 with just 1,820 Cutlass Supreme SX 2 Door Hardtop's Produced! This is a very Original 455 Powered Cutlass SX that is nicely Optioned with a Beautiful color combination and the all important Original Documentation. This Cutlass SX appears to be wearing all of its Original sheet metal and there are no signs of any patches or rust problems. This is the REAL DEAL with the Original BUILD SHEET from under the Front Seat as well as Documentation from the Oldsmobile History Center and the car is also Registered with the Cutlass SX Club. I have included pictures of the Build Sheet, Oldsmobile History Center Documentation and more in the auction and there is a large 3 ring Binder filled with Documentation including owner history, Oldsmobile Historical Documentation and much more. This 1971 Cutlass SX was Built at GM's Arlington Texas Assembly Plant in the 5th week of November of 1970 before being shipped to Rice Oldsmobile in Knoxville Tennessee where it was sold New and would remain for much of its life. Its quite obvious that this car was never exposed to severe weather or any Winter driving for that matter. The underside of the car tells the story as far as Im concerned and I have no doubt that this car was garaged most of, if not all of its life. This Cutlass SX has No Undercoating and shows much of the Original Red Oxide paint on the Floors and Undercarriage as used on cars assembled at the Arlington Texas Plant and the Original Red Oxide Floors and Undercarriage on this car are absolutely amazing! You'd be hard pressed to find another Unrestored Original car from this era that looks as nice and clean underneath as this one. Keep in mind as you look through the pictures that the underside of the car received nothing more than a good old fashioned cleaning with some light soap and water and a little rubbing compound in a few small areas. There were no pressure washers used and no chemicals and absolutely no paint work was done to the underside of this car. What your looking at is a beautifully preserved original undercarriage and this was just a light cleaning. The underside of the car shows paint inspection markings and such which were done on the Arlington Texas Assembly Line. The body on this car is super solid and appears to be wearing all of its Original body panels with no patches. The car is nice and straight and looks very nice from every angle. This 1971 Cutlass SX is a very nice Original example with its Original Matching Numbers 455 and its Original Turbo Hydramatic Automatic Transmission. The Original "L32" 455 4 Barrel 320 Horsepower engine runs beautifully and does not appear to have ever been out of the car. If somebody were to tell me that the engine was rebuilt then I would not be surprised as it runs perfectly with no noises, no smoke and runs super strong. You could not ask for a better running 455 ... its a great running original engine with that wonderful deep rumble that works its way out the exhaust through a pair of Flowmaster Mufflers which eventually exits through the Original Chrome Exhaust Tips. The Original "OD" coded "M40" 3 Speed Automatic Transmission shifts effortlessly and gives nice decisive shifts through the gears with no problems.... no slippage, no noises.... just a great shifting original Transmission. The Rear is the Original Factory 10 Bolt with 2.56 gearing which makes for a wonderful Highway cruiser. This SX is an absolutely pleasure to drive whether your on the Cruising down the Highway or enjoying a nice drive along a country road. Its even well mannered when driven around the city streets! The engine Compartment appears very Original from the Air Cleaner to the Exhaust Manifolds and has a nice clean appearance and everything appears to be quite original with the exception of some common maintainence parts..... a very nice clean original engine compartment. There are no known mechanical issues with this car as I have recently gone over the car from front to back and the car passed a very strict Pennsylvania State Safety Inspection. This Cutlass Supreme SX was sold New at Rice Oldsmobile in Knoxville Tennessee where it would spend most of its life before making its way to Florida and was then sold to a gentleman in Pennsylvania in September of 2001. The Cutlass SX had just 98,000 Miles on the car when it arrived in Pennsylvania nearly 10 years ago. The car was then used for the occasional car show and was always garaged. The car has seen little use over the last 10 years as it now shows 99,654 miles. This 1971 Cutlass SX is very Original all around and appears to have been repainted one time in its life in its Original Code "67 E" as shown on the Original Cowl Trim Tag. The underside of the Trunk Lid, Door Jambs and engne compartment all appear to be wearing their Original paint. The Code "67" Paint is the Original Sienna and the "E" is for the Sandalwood Vinyl Roof. The Interior is coded "989" which is also Sienna which makes for an absolutely stunning combination in my opinion. The Vinyl Roof is Beautiful and looks gorgeous on this car and the Interior is super nice and believed to be all Original except for the carpets which appear to have been replaced. The Original Interior is one of the nicest Original interiors that I have seen in many years and not only looks great but is super comfortable as well. This car is Nicely Optioned with Power Steering, Power Disc Brakes, Power Windows, Power Trunk Release, Air Conditioning, Tilt Steering Column with Deluxe Steering Wheel, Vinyl Bench Seat with Fold Down Armrest, Dual Body Color Painted Sport Mirrors, Tinted Glass, Electric Clock, Bumper Guards Front and Rear, Interior Courtesy Lights, Night/Day Mirror with Optional Light, Map Light, Deluxe AM Radio with Rear Speaker, Door Edge Guards, Passenger Side Sun Visor Mirror, Hood and Trunk Lights, Super Stock III 14x7" Rally Wheels, Body Side Paint Stripe and more. This is a very attractive Original car with very Nice Original Glass, Clean Original Chrome Trim and Stainless. The Electric Windows all work perfectly and the Power Trunk Release works as well. The Air Conditioning works fine although another can of R12 would make things a little nicer on the hottest of days. The Interior Map Light and Rearview Mirror Lights work as they should as do all of the other lights. Absolutely every light on this car works except for the Trunk Light which I believe to need a new bulb and I will get that done before the auction ends. The Dash Lights up nice and bright for evening driving and the Brake Lights, Turn Signals, High and Low Beams, Parking Lights, Heater + Defroster all work as they should. The Doors open and close beautifully and they lock and unlock with the keys. This car drives down the road like a new car with the Newer BF Goodrich T/A Radial Tires that you see in some of the pictures although I have a set of Original Goodyear Polyglas GT Tires currently on the car. The car also has all 5 of the Original 14x7" Rally Wheels coded "MA" which are correct and original to the car.... just a very Original car overall. The Original Uniroyal Spare Tire does not appear to have ever been on the ground and the Original Jack in super nice and complete. I could go on and on but I think you get the idea. This is just a very clean Original car and was built as one of those cars that you could sneak under the Radar of the Insurance companies. Keep in mind that the Insurance companies were starting to take a really hard look at the cars they were insuring and cars like this Cutlass Supreme SX would likely be overlooked as a High Risk or at the very least you can bet that the guy who was driving the 442 was paying a little more for his insurance that the guy who was driving and insuring his Cutlass Supreme SX..... afterall, the Cutlass Supreme was around for years and was often the car that was purchased in lieu of the 442 because of the price tag and insurance cost although this highly options SX was a fairly pricey car in its day. It was basically a 442 without the badging or a Wolf in Sheep's Clothing so to speak. You still got the big 455 making a conservative 320 Horsepower but there were no big "442" letters or any large Stripes going down the Hoods. These Culass SX's were surely one of those rare cars that many Muscle car guys never knew existed. The Oldsmobile Faithful knew exactly what they were and they have always been a favorite among diehard Oldsmobile guys! This 1971 Olds Cutlass Supreme SX is a very good Original example thats been well cared for over the last 40 years. Its a nicely optioned car with a wonderful color combination and its exceptionally original! The body is very nice and the paint looks quite nice as you can see from the photos. The Vinyl Roof is in excellent condition and the Original interior is Outstanding. This car runs and drives beautifully and I wouldnt hesitate to drive it anywhere. It has that super nice ride that you get from a good original Oldsmobile. The only issues that come to mind are the electric clock doesnt operate properly and I believe the Original AM Radio will need a new speaker and the Trunk Light will need a new bulb. Everything else is in good working order from the Lights to the Power Windows to the excellent running condition of the Original 455. Its just a great old car. Please feel free to call Tony 215-499-2693 with any questions as I would be happy to answer any questions or concerns. If you need more photos then please let me know what you would like to see and I will gladly photograph it for you. Please check my feedback and bid with confidence as I strive to give the best description possible. I welcome ou to come and see the car in person if your in the Philly PA area or from anywhere for that matter. Just give me a call and we can make arrangements to get together so you can check out the car in person. The car is obviously 40 years old and is sold as is but rest assured its a great old car and a fairly rare old car as well. Please feel free to call me at 215-499-2693 if you cant come to see the car although Id prefer a personal inspection if possible. These are old cars and everybody looks at them differently and this is one of the reasons that Ive added so many pictures and as much information as possible. I want the new owner to be happy with his or her purchase. The winning bidder should contact me within 24 hours of the auctions end and the car should be paid for in full within 5 days of the auctions end with no exceptions unless we have come to some other agreement beforehand. I will accept either bank check, cashiers check or bank wire transfer as payment or your welcome to pay for the car in good old greenbacks if you come to pick the car up within the 5 days of auctions end. The winning bidder is responsible for all shipping or transport cost although I would be happy to help with transport arrangements as I know several reputable insured professional auto transporters who can deliver the car safely to your front door at a reasonable price. Please call Tony 215-499-2693 with all questions or to talk about a buy it now. Thanks again for taking the time to read my auction and be sure to scroll down and look at the many pictures that Ive added to the auction. THERE ARE ORIGINAL ASSEMBLY LINE MARKINGS ON THE REAR AXLE AND ON VARIOUS PARTS OF THE SUSPENSION. IF YOU LOOK AT THE FLOOR PANS IN THE BACKGROUND YOU CAN SEE THAT THEY WERE JUST DIRTY FROM THE MANY YEARS OF ROAD DUST AND GRIME THAT GATHERED ON THE UNDERCARRIAGE. A LITTLE SOAP AND WATER AND THE FLOORS AND UNDERCARRIAGE LOOK SUPER NICE! On Aug-13-11 at 16:43:01 PDT, seller added the following information: I just wanted to address a few things about the condition of the car which several people have asked about so I thought it would be best to add as much information as possible with this revision. The body on this Cutlass SX is very nice and extremely solid. If you take a good look at the pictures of the undercarriage then these photos should give you a fairly good idea as to the overall condition of the body. Its a good solid car and appears to be a very original car overall. One gentleman asked me about rust and from looking the car over, I would say that this has never been a rusty car..... as I said earlier, just take a look at the completely original undercarriage and you'll get a really good idea as to the condition of the body. I have never seen Floor Pans or any Undercarriage with the original Red Oxide Primer looking so clean on any car let alone a 40 year old car with absolutely No Undercoating and No Undercarriage Restoration! The Original factory welds on the body panels are nice and crisp with nice wheel houses and nice rockers, quarters, etc etc. The only thing that I noticed was some light bubbling in the paint on the lower drivers rear quarter panel behind the wheel and after looking this quarter panel over closely, its as solid as a rock! The Original Quarter Panel and the Inner Panel are as solid as they come with beautiful Factory Original pinch welds. You will not be disappointed with the body on this Oldsmobile. Its a very nice Original car with a great Original body! The Paint on the Cutlass SX looks very nice and would be well received at any Local Cruise Night gathering or even Local Car Shows although I do not consider this car to be a show car. I have however, seen many cars entered in car shows that were not nearly as nice as this Cutlass SX 455! The Paint has some nicks and scratches that any car that gets driven is likely to get.... nothing terrible or offensive by any means. This 1971 Cutlass Supreme SX is a very attractive classic Muscle car that most anybody would be proud to own and it would make a nice addition to any Oldsmobile guys garage. Looking through some of the old paperwork on the car from previous owners, I was able to ascertain that the Air Conditioning Compressor and Evaporator were replaced with the correct Original type units back in 2001. This is nice to know because it tells you that the AC Compressor and Evaporator are not the 40 year old units but rather 10 year old correct original replacements. There were some other regular maintainence items replaced over the years as well and this Cutlass has always received proper care, maintainence and was obviously always garaged. I cant say enough about how well the original 455 4 Barrel engine runs. It always starts easily and runs very strong. Its an excellent performer all the way around and has more than enough power to put a great big smile on the face of any Classic Olds enthusiast! The Transmission shifts as it should with no problems. The car steers nicely and tracks beautifully down the Highway. The Brakes are excellent and the big power front disc brakes really bring this Cutlass to a stop in a hurry under any conditions. The car runs flawlessly and drives beautifully with the BF Goodrich T/A Radials and it looks great with the Vintage Goodyear Polyglas GT G60-14 Tires but the Vintage Polyglas Tires do not provide the same beautiful ride that the newer Radial Tires do. The Interior in this Cutlass is very clean and looks great. Its a very Original Interior and shows some very minor signs of wear but its nice enough that I wouldnt do a thing to the interior. The Lights and all of the electrical components are in good operating condition and the Trunk Light which I mentioned earlier which was not working is now working as it should. The Power Windows all work very well and open and close nicely at a fairly fast speed. The Power Trunk Release works perfectly and the Original Tilt Steering Wheel works as it should. The Heater/Defroster, Air Conditioning, Windshield Wipers, Horn, Gas Gauge, Speedometer, Odometer, Headlights, Brake Lights, Turn Signals, License Plate Light, Dash Lights, Under Hood Light, All Interior Lights, Trunk Light, Parking Lights, Courtesy Lights, Rearview Mirror Light, etc etc.... all work as they should. The in Dash Clock Does not work properly and I believe the Radio to need a New Speaker.... otherwise, absolutely everything in this car works just as Oldsmobile intended when this car was built back in November of 1970. The Side Glass was professionally tinted and it keeps the interior nice and cool when the sun is strong but if you dont like the tint then its easily removed and reveals the Factory Original Soft-Ray Tinted Glass. One last thing, I make a mistake about the Original Spare Tire. I said that it was a Uniroyal but its the Original BF Goodrich Silvertown Spare Tire. Its fairly interesting as the Original Spare is Mounted on the Original "MA" Coded 14x7" Rally Wheel and the Rally Wheel and BF Goodrich Spare were mounted together when New and Balanced and the Original Lead Weight used to Balance the wheel and Tire is marked "BF Goodrich". I thought this was pretty cool as I have never seen a balancing weight with the Tire Manufacturers name before. Thats about all that I can think of right now guys. If you have any further questions then feel free to email or call me and I will be happy to answer any questions or concerns that you might have. I have many photos if you want specific photos of any part of the car so please dont hesitate to ask. Thanks again for all of the interest in this Cool Cutlass SX 455...... I appreciate the questions, emails, phone calls and your bids. I will be dropping the reserve just one time and if the car sells then so be it and if not, no big deal as I would be happy to keep this wonderful Oldsmobile in my small collection of Vintage Muscle cars. Thanks again for taking the time to read through this rather lengthy auction....... Tony 215-499-2693 ps, I will knock off $300 from the winning bid if you do not want the Goodyear Polyglas Tires and will install the like New BF Goodrich Radial T/A on the Original "MA" Coded Rally Wheels.
