Vehicle Detail

As the old saying goes, cars are only original once. There’s something special about a tight car that hasn’t been disassembled and then put back together—they simply feel different on the road. Aside from a repaint in the original Sublime Green about six years ago and an engine bay detail job, this 1970 Road Runner is a numbers-matching, mechanically original piece showing an authentic 97,808 miles on the clock. This Road Runner still carries most of its original sheetmetal, although the quarters were replaced during the repaint. Panel gaps and alignment are pretty much as the factory did it, which means it’s highly original, but not as exact as we’ve come to expect from our restored cars these days. No matter, because it’s the color that will blow you away—there’s simply nothing like a Sublime Green car to make you stop and stare. Perhaps the most vivid of the day-glow hues, it works on the Road Runner because it was designed from the start to be all about fun. With a cartoon mascot (including correct dust trail decals on the flanks), an “Air Grabber” hood that’s fully functional, and a blacked-out hood, this car is all about eyeball appeal. The interior, however, is highly original and speaks volumes about how well preserved this car really is. The Road Runner was all about low-priced fun, so you won’t find frills like bucket seats and a console, but all the go-fast hardware is there. The shifter is Chrysler’s awesome pistol-grip piece, which perfectly fits the car’s playful personality, and the dash is full of useful gauges. The door panels, steering wheel, headliner, and dash pad are all original pieces, although the carpets may be replacements—it’s hard to say for certain, with my only clue being that they simply look too nice to be 40+ years old. The original AM radio still lives in the dash, and a recent set of embroidered Road Runner floor mats have been installed. The massive trunk features a new trunk mat and a full-sized spare tire with jack. Under that Air Grabber hood is a recently detailed 383 cubic inch V8, which is, in fact, the original one installed at the factory more than four decades ago. The head bolts were put there by the guys on the assembly line, the gaskets are original, and the only work that has been done has been purely cosmetic. The correct Air Grabber air cleaner remains, and wears fresh ‘Coyote Duster’ decals, the block wears a coat of fresh Hemi Orange paint, and a correct “Beep beep!” horn still lives on the radiator cradle. Key it up and it runs beautifully, with a muscular rumble from the new dual exhaust system and Flowmaster mufflers. The 4-speed shifts as it should, and the original 8.75-inch rear still lives out back. Clean floors, recent shocks, and a fresh gas tank round out the list of features an upgrades on underneath. The original 14-inch wheels now wear a set of 225/70/14 white letter radials, one of the few upgrades on the car. No, it’s not a show-stopping Hemi with a concours restoration, but rather a clean, honest car with a strong-running original 383 and a lot of authenticity. The price is right, and anything with a big block and a manual transmission is going to be a lot of fun to drive. And driving this one is the key—get in, fire it up, and hit the road without worrying about paint and road rash, that’s what this Road Runner is all about.
