Vehicle Detail

This is a no-reserve auction for a factory 4-speed 1977 Pontiac Trans Am. This car is currently running, drivable, and fairly roadworthy, but it is incomplete. I will try to describe everything I know about the car, but if you have any further questions I will provide contact information near the bottom of this description. I purchased this car locally a year and a half ago from a guy who did most of the tear down and some preparation, but the project stalled out for him when he bought a new house and moved. I basically purchased it as a disassembled rolling shell, with parts stuffed in the trunk and added to it when I had the time. The engine and transmission are not original, but I will get into the details of that shortly. ATTENTION: THERE ARE PICTURES POSTED WITH BLUE TAYLOR SPARK PLUG WIRES ON THE ENGINE WITH AN MSD 6A BOX. THIS IS THE IGNITION SYSTEM THAT IS ON THE MOTOR NOW. I HAD TO INSTALL 135-DEGREE WIRES BECAUSE THE 180-DEGREE BOOTS GOT CAUGHT ON THE STEERING SHAFT. THE MSD BOX WAS INSTALLED TO ELIMINATE THE HEI MODULE. THIS IMAGE DISCREPANCY IS JUST AN UPDATE. THANKS FOR UNDERSTANDING. Some of the work completed includes: *Disc-brake rear with 3.73:1 from 1980 T/A *Front suspension/subframe/rear completely rebuilt with PST polygraphite *NEW: inner/outer tie rods, centerlink, spindles, pitman/idler *NEW: brake lines, cables, calipers, rotors, master cylinder/booster, coil springs, KYB shocks *Larger '80 TT/A sway bars and all new polygraphite mounts *Rear quarters professionally installed, new floor partials installed under rear seats *Radiator rebuilt, lots of parts coated with POR-15 including subframe, rear axle housing, driveshaft *Borg-Warner Super T-10 transmission *1972 YS 400--very low mileage, w/timing gears, 1.52 roller tip rockers *#13 heads *New headers The factory-installed luxury options on this car are non-existent. No power windows, no power door locks, no T-top roof, no rear-window defrost, no cruise control, no A/C. It pretty much came off the Norwood line only to go fast. It does have tilt steering however. Overall, the car runs very clean but the carburetor is sloppy. At times it will idle clear then it will surge then raise then fall. Around 2500 it bubbles then it clears out again. It runs rich, then leans out. I tore it down and adjusted the power piston to the correct height and cleared all passages but it's still not smooth. It's just an old carb but it wouldn't be helpless if the right hands got a hold of it. The mechanical fuel pump went T/U last week and no one local had a replacement in stock (?!?!) so I put a 3/8"in/out Airtex electric pump in. It's not top-shelf, but no hard lines were hacked or holes drilled to install it. I have it there as a temporary option, but it would be fine as a permanent fix as well. The water pump also recently went T/U so that's a new one on there as well. The windshield needs to be replaced, the front right grill needs to be replaced, and although the hood is very solid, you can tell in the picture that someone had a bright idea long ago to drill tiny holes around the shaker hole to put a cowl-induction-type scoop on the car. The holes can be welded up and the hood would be perfect--no creases, folds, or weakness at all. The shaker has been cut open at the rear but the base is very much intact and complete. There is no terminal cancer anywhere on the car but there is some surface scale from previous attempts to strip the paint. All metal is solid and no surprises anywhere. Sure, you might be able to knock crud off the rear unibody rails, but you won't be dealing with rot anywhere. I am including pictures of the floors (front and rear) as well as the trunk, and the door jambs. All drivetrain components--engine, flywheel, clutch, transmission--are in very nice shape. The only concern I would like to address is the heads were not rebuilt. As the car is, the heads haven't been a problem but they need to be remanufactured if you are going to run this car seriously. Several valves looked to be thin or sunken into each head, but nothing was bent or burnt. I just cleaned them up and reinstalled. The tires are very near new at 95+% on new 15"x8" steel D-window wheels. The headers are new but need a little persuasion to get them in the right place. The passenger collector sits tightly against the subframe--I'd move it if I was keeping the car. The rest of the exhaust is just donor junk that I bolted up to keep the neighbors from complaining. I'll leave it on the car, but it's nothing to brag about. However, I am including an original set of splitter tips (not the fake junk reproduction that looks ridiculous) with the car. Also included is all the body molding, four wheel flares (two new), air cleaner plumbing, new rocker molding, and whatever else is in the trunk or laying around. There aren't a lot of parts this car needs to be complete. It is missing the carpet and headliner from the interior and that's about it. I have found no cracks in the dash, and the stereo is still a two-knobber so the opening is not cut out. The tach works, but the fuel/water gauges are pegged. The odometer is in excess of mechanical means, true mileage not documented. The aftermarket mechanical oil/water gauges are not permanently installed but are just resting in the console pocket. The driver's seat is very worn, and the rear shelf has some very funky carpet laid down. In one picture of the dash, you can see something fishy up near the VIN tag--that's just the trim tag that I left up there when I took a picture of the pair together. Overall, the interior is in pretty good shape though. The rear window louvers (with keys!) can go with the car as well, but one of the locks is missing. The car will also come with one ignition key and two door keys. As far as I know, all the electrical works. I've only checked the lights--interior and exterior--ignition, gauges, windshield wipers, and there are no hacks in any harnesses. Wiring throughout the car is very solid. The horns are not mounted, the heater motor is unplugged and I haven't checked the cigarette lighter. In case there is confusion over the images, I've posted pictures of the car's progression--when I replaced the heads, I took pictures along the way. The engine is totally complete as you see it in the videos, as is the car. There is an image of the lifter valley to show a little bit of the internal cleanliness as well as the timing gears. There is also an updated picture of the spark plug wires that includes the roller-tips rockers. I'm sure it's not as confusing as I think it might be, but I wanted to clarify any discrepancies between images. The car and engine are complete. I've posted pictures of the VIN tag, trim tag, and build sheet so you can see there is no funny business with any of it. That's my name on the title, which I'm very open about because I don't like doing business with questions and confusion and I don't expect bidders to either. With that said, I would appreciate any serious bidders to contact me within 12 hours of any bid (pre/post) if you do not have credible recent feedback. If you don't look legitimate, I may elect to remove your bid. This ad costs me a lot of money if someone flakes out, and it costs other buyers a lot of trust if deals fall through as well. It is just bad no matter how funny or harmless it seems to make deadbeat bids. Please don't do it. For shipping, I would prefer you take care of that, but I may be able to accommodate a short transit if the car needs to be driven to be loaded. By short transit, I mean I would drive the car to the Broadway Truck Stop if you arrange a driver to pick the car up from there. Otherwise, you are welcome to load the car yourself or send someone to pick it up once it is paid for. CONTACT ME AT 509-270-0044 if you have any questions that are not addressed here, or if you want to confirm your bid/my existence. I should be available throughout the weekend but on Monday 8/8 I will be out of cell phone range until evening. On Aug-06-11 at 20:30:39 PDT, seller added the following information: For anyone interested, the caster/camber/toe measures at: CASTER (L)+1.25 (R)+1.75 CAMBER (L)-1.1875 (R)-1.1875 TOE MARGINAL POSITIVE (OR "IN") STEERING WHEEL ON CENTER On Aug-07-11 at 16:11:14 PDT, seller added the following information: I replaced the "junky" exhaust this morning because one side actually fell off the clamp at the reducer. The glasspacks aren't much to look at or work with, but they should be sufficient for transportation. I hope? Anyway, some other updates: I locked the rear window louvers down as well, so they should be good for transport too. The rear marker lights are in, and all the tail lighting works, as does the fuel gauge. I found a replacement door handle for the driver's side, there is a package of papers that includes a bunch of original dealership forms, as well as the 1977 owner's manual, the cigarette (cell phone charger) receptacle works, and the trunk is pretty much full of good stuff that needs to be put on the car. This car really goes good, and really brings a smile....
