1955 was Ford’s first year with the homerun T Bird franchise with 16,155 of these special two place convertibles spawned. They were, so to speak, Ford’s answer to the Chevrolet Corvette and whilst the T Bird settled more happily on the luxury side, these guys approached 110 mph or better. Performance for our Bird comes from the factory original 292 CI V8 expelling 193 HP. This particular engine had a seven year production run, a winning testament to its reliability and performance. Our example here fires up nicely with the correct rumble and scoots around the town like a scene from Back To The Future. It is obvious this engine has been well maintained and is completely sorted. The same can be said for Ford’s automatic transmission. She shifts smoothly and without complaint. What a perfectly blended drive train set up. Matched with power steering and power brakes the car was remarkably modern for its time and is still a comfortable driver today. The exterior was beautifully restored approximately 12 years ago and given the car has only travelled a handful of miles since then, is in brilliant condition. There exist the customary very light surface scratches which come from towel drying over the years but nothing surprising or even disappointing. I walked around the 175” convertible half a dozen times looking for a paint chip or two but didn’t see a one. If there is any it will take a keener eye than mine to find them. The chrome was redone when the car was painted and although there exists light spotting, due to the expanse of time, they still polish up wonderfully. That also goes for the original Kelsey-Hayes wire wheels. They were restored when the rest of the car was sorted and boy do they glow. The factory optional off white convertible top is likewise in top shelf condition and I bet it probably has never ben rained on, it looks that fresh. The plastic rear window also presents nicely but let’s be honest, everyone knows nothing beats a glass rear window. The hardtop that accompanied the car when new has long since gone missing which isn’t too much of a surprise as the past owner never took her out with the top up anyway. Now to the interior. We have, what appears to be the original interior in place, from the dash to the seats to the carpeting. Their condition is very good indeed and perhaps telling that the 29,904 miles showing might be actual. The long-term owner we bought her from drove her very sparingly indeed and when he bought her, the seller claimed the miles where accurate. Due to the car’s age we are dealing with a exempt marked odometer reading so we can’t sell her as actual miles. Still, have a close look at this interior and draw your own conclusions. You are looking @ a well-functioning cockpit here. Everything works from the gauges to the Town and Country AM radio and even the clock. The past owner disconnected it because she runs down the battery but she is ready to crank back up, if you wish. Apart from the power antenna which now only runs manually, no we can’t find any issues. The power seat likewise travels just as it is suppose too. Same goes for the added on Vintage Air system installed 10 years back, she blows cold. This car has had 10’s of thousands of dollars invested in her above our asking price. Of course that is a sign of our times as this downward economy has touched everything. Still, a real bargain is on offer here and doubtless the first inspection will confirm the car’s qualities. We do have piles of past paperwork on her and they will travel with the Ford to her next happy owner. The happy comment is as sure as the sun rising in the morning………..have fun.
