Vehicle Detail

Up for auction is my 1980 Toyota FJ40 LandCruiser. If you’re looking at my ad, you probably already know that clean, unmolested 40’s are hard to find. Even more rare to find is one that’s not a rust bucket. So, if you’re looking for a truck to fix up and take to car shows, this is a great candidate for restoration. On the other hand, if you want to build up a sweet trail rig and want to start with a clean mostly original truck, this 40 would be great for that, too. If you’re like me and wanted a 40 to tool around town, you could drive this one as is and be guaranteed to turn some heads. The photos speak for themselves, this is an awesome 40! I’ve owned the truck for about three and a half years and put approximately 5,900 miles on it during that time, including the 1500 miles I put on it driving it back from Oregon where I bought it. I’ve garaged it the whole time and it’s been a great truck. I’m sad to see it go, but we don’t drive it and we no longer have the space in our garage so it needs a new home. You probably have a few standard questions you’d like to ask, so here’s my attempt to describe it better: First, it’s not completely rust free. If it were, my auction price would be much higher. A close look at the pictures shows there’s some oxidation starting to form in a few places such as the floor pans, along the corners of the headliner, some of the exterior hinges and hood latches and minor oxidation inside the truck up along where the rounded corners of the tub meets the back doors. (see photos). However, the tub threshold is relatively clean (highly unusual!) and where there is oxidation it doesn’t seem to go beyond the surface of the paint. I got stuck out in a rain storm once and noticed water dripping in from the top coming down along the edges of the windscreen. I assume this is the cause of the oxidation in the floor pans. To me, it looks like the caulking inside the rain gutter of the removable top needs attention (I’ve never had the top off and can’t tell if any previous owners might have). I’ve included some pictures of the top to show what I mean. That same rain storm got the inside of the glove box wet which looked to be related to the seam that runs along the base of the folding windshield where it meets the cowling. I used some water proof caulk on it and it stopped the problem from re-occurring (see picture). I suspect that at some point in the past, water got in this way and oxidized the numbers on the speedometer. They work just fine and you may not have noticed had I not mentioned it here. The truck has the original 2F motor, manual steering and 4 speed manual transmission with stock 3:70 gears. Although it’s not built for speed, I’ve had the truck up to 65 or 70 on the highway and it drives straight with no pulling or hesitation. The stock wheels with original hub caps are all there, including on the spare. The four tires mounted on the truck are Federal MS-351s (235/75R/15). The spare hanging off the back is a BFG All Terrain TA of the same size. The previous owner replaced a tie rod end, a drag link and had the alignment done. He also reported compression in the six cylinders as follows: 153, 145, 143, 148, 150 and 147 pounds. While in my possession, I’ve had the oil changed 3 times, had the steering box seal and differential seal replaced (fixed a small leak), fixed the parking brake cable, replaced the choke cable, replaced the gasket on the carb, replaced the master cylinder clutch and per Colorado state law, had it pass our state emissions test each year. I have receipts to show for the work that was done. A note here about passing emissions. One of the previous owners removed the smog equipment and replaced it with a header and a Holly carb (see photos). In some states like Colorado passing annual emissions tests requires the smog equipment to be there, so I have a catalytic convertor I put on the truck for the test and then remove it after I’ve passed (truck runs better and quieter without the cat). The pully and belt are there but the smog box is not. If you’re interested in returning the truck to stock, I acquired an original carb, air cleaner and most of the parts (not all) to put it all back the way it rolled off the factory line. They’re included in this auction. The seats are either in awesome original shape or a previous owner reupholstered them. There is one split in the vinyl fabric on the drivers side where the seat lever is (see picture). The passenger seat and rear seats are clean with no rips, tears or stains. (They stay folded up most the time so the seat belts left temporary impressions which you can see in the photos). The truck has the original bottle jack and jack crank handle thingie as well as the hub cap puller. There is dent in the passenger side bumperette. You can buy those form SOR if you feel the need to replace it. I mounted a CB antenna on the spare tire swing arm and had the radio techs at Ultimate Electronics run wire to a spot between the seats right in front of the console tray. The power cable is hooked up there as well and fitted with a quick disconnect so a CB radio can be removed from the truck when unneeded. The CB and antenna are not included in this auction. I originally bought my 40 to trick it out for off roading, but plans change and I decided to work on my 80 instead. The one time I did take it offroad I had difficulty getting it into 4Low. My TLCA friends judged it just hadn’t been driven in 4Low very often ( a testament to it’s great condition) and the transfer case shift lever was sticking. So, it’s been serviced for that as well and it’s new owner should have no problems. This is a great truck and I’m sure the new owner will be very happy with it. I’m happy to answer any questions and take more pictures if you’d like. I’m setting a fair reserve on the truck and intend to let the auction run its full time. Please don’t bid if you’re not serious or don’t have the finances. There’s no warranty expressed or implied. Please be prepared to come and get the truck within a reasonable amount of time after your winning bid (a week or so). Alternatively, you can arrange to have a car transportation service pick it up at your expense. I can help with logistics on that. Thanks for looking and good luck bidding!
