Whilst they always cornered that segment well the performance side was left, principally, to Pontiac and Chevrolet. That all began to change in the mid 60’s and the tip of Buick’s performance spear was, without question, the Gran Sport. You could tick the order box for this high performance option package when selecting a Wildcat, Century, Skylark or Riviera. Production of course was limited with just 10,743 of these’68 GS Skylarks made. The current owners purchased this GS 15 years ago after the restoration works were performed and have enjoyed her to the tune of about 2,000 miles per year since. We know the rear quarters were replaced then but the balance of the sheet metal appears original. This could be down to the fact she spent a good deal of years in Texas and away from the challenges of our Northern climate. The Buckskin Metallic lacquer paint has aged very well indeed, a testament to the professional restoration that was done. She has been well polished and protected over the years as the shine is very strong. The GS has just a minor chip or two but nothing needing extra attention. The chrome has likewise held up nicely with only a couple weaker areas that could use some minor sorting. The light tan vinyl roof is the right color combination to sit against the Buckskin Metallic. I know the popular prejudice runs in favor of black, white or red on most cars but when you’re talking the late 60’s……..think shades of brown. The previously restored light tan interior looks circa ’68 all the way and the bucket seat center console combo are the only way to go. The car was highly optioned for its time with all the modern comfort conveniences, PS,PB, PW, Tilt Wheel and more. The A/C is factory and she may need just a Freon recharge to cool the Buick down but we can’t determine for certain. The radio works as she should and pulls in the stations loud and clear. The rear seat compartment provides ample room for two adults and has had little use over its lifetime. The 400 / 340HP engine appears to be the original and fires up instantly. The extra pulling power of the GS option makes the Buick a blast to drive. The handling characteristics of these midsized GM platforms are perfectly suited for this performance package. These motors, along with their Turbo 400 automatic transmissions, are a bullet proof duet that have set reliability records for GM for years now. They are also easily maintainable and there isn’t a reason why they won’t continue that long march into the record books. The 4 Goodyear ST P215/70R tires have substantial tread life remaining and our the preferred tires for this GS. Regular maintenance has routinely been performed on our Buick and she is a ready and reliable classic driver for your next road trip or car meet. She offers much style and performance for a fairly low price of admission. Terms and Conditions of Sale We take time to carefully describe each vehicle and include a substantial number of photos.
