Also, if you win the auction or otherwise buy the car, if you request, we’ll include the framed photo of your choosing, of your new SPG! History: "Classic" Saab 900 models are becoming attractive as a special interest automobile and enjoy a growing cult status among enthusiasts. The combination of unique, "aircraft inspired" appearance with innovative quality engineering and pleasing road manners make these cars particularly appealing to those who appreciate automobiles. Convertibles and turbos tend to attract the most interest, though the increasing rarity of well kept "unmolested" examples are making nearly all variants potentially collectable. As Saab was a low volume manufacturer, most Saabs are relatively uncommon and any Saab limited edition model is considered particularly unusual. 3-Door 900s have a strong following among those who appreciate Saab's closed 900 models — in particular the iconic turbocharged models including the 900 SPG (a high-performance version of the 1985-1991 Saab 900 Turbo 3-door typically equipped with leather interiors, aerodynamic side panels, and upgraded suspension components). In 1984, Saab introduced a high performance model known in Europe as the Aero. The Aero/SPG was the first Saab to be delivered with the 160 bhp (119 kW; 162 PS) 16-valve turbo motor. In 1985, the first year of consumer production, the Aero/SPG was delivered in black and in silver (in markets other than USA). In the US the black cars were featured with tan leather interiors. In Canada and in the rest of the world, the cars were black with red leather interiors. 1985 was the only year of the Aero/SPG when a color other than dark grey was available on the SPG in North America. Production of the SPG was extremely limited and paint color availability varied by year. The final year of production was 1991 in the USA. In total, over the course of six years, just over 7,000 SPGs were built and imported to North America. In the rest of the world, Aeros were equally rare—especially those loaded with leather interiors, A/C and other luxuries considered standard by upscale North American consumers. The SPG is fondly regarded by car collectors and Saab enthusiasts. A 1989 Saab 900 SPG owned by Peter Gilbert of Wisconsin, was driven over a million miles, before being donated to The Wisconsin Automotive Museum. Peter Gilbert claimed a million miles out of the turbocharging unit in addition to the engine itself. He was awarded by Saab with a Saab 9-5 Aero. This lovely SPG We are proud to offer this quality example of the first year of the 900 Turbo SPG. The vehicle had a recent service/oil change and is a pleasure to drive. Brakes are strong, without pulling side to side or vibrating. The pedal has firm pressure and inspires confidence for spirited drives! Transmission also feels strong. These are notoriously finicky transmissions, and this one doesn’t make any “crunch” noises in any gear. Engine makes good power, does not smoke or seem to drip/leak any oil anywhere. There is under hard acceleration a slight miss or hesitation around 4000RPM. However, it does not happen all the time or in all the gears. Clutch feels strong, without slipping, and engages about halfway through the pedal travel. Cooling system and turbo are good, without smoke or overheating. The AC system does not seem to be working, it likely needs a re-charge. Overall, this is a very smooth driving, fun car that the new owner will enjoy thoroughly as we have! Other notable things (good and bad):- Body molding/trim behind passenger side door needs to be attached better. It isn’t bad, but the metal trim piece that clips to the body needs to be re-installed and comes with the car.- As is imaginable on a car this age, it has a few dings here and there, but is overall VERY straight.- Windshield has about a six inch crack on the passenger side lower corner, but does not obstruct the driver or passenger view.- It is missing the lenses on the inner part of the headlights, one is included, but the other is gone.- Needs one of the fog lights replaced (see pics).- Driver’s seat upholstery is bad. The rest of the interior is in really nice shape, but that driver’s seat is an eyesore!- The transmission has a funny feel to it. It takes some finessing or just about five minutes of driving to get the feel for it. Call and we can discuss this further as it is hard to explain! - It should also be noted that these 900s are tough to find in this nice of shape, but we are a FULL DISCLOSURE DEALERSHIP! Anything we know, you’ll know too. We just think that is the best way of doing business. Some positives:- Low miles, 148k. (Odometer does work).- Headliner is in great shape!- Power windows work well.- Sunroof also works well.- No rust.- Dashboard has maybe two hairline cracks. This is the nicest 900 dash I’ve seen, and we’ve had four of these in the past two years.- Tires are all matching and have great tread.- Stereo is new, and had an iPod hookup. Overall, this is a wonderful car with good performance, great gas mileage, outstanding cargo room, and is a blast to drive. The best part? These SPGs are appreciating in value! It should be also noted that the motor was not detailed or cleaned up in these pictures at all, so you can see the engine as we received it. Disclaimer:Due to the nature of business these days, especially online, please keep the following in mind:Besides any issues I mention in the ad, please keep in mind this is an old car, and though it has been well taken care of and is in good shape, it is an older car and my description is as honest as can be but with all things subject to relativity. If you went through the car with a magnifying glass and fine toothed comb you could find faults for sure--as you can with any car, and so the car is sold “as-is” and pre- purchase inspections can help take some guesswork out of any car purchase so I encourage them.
