Vehicle Detail
Sometimes there’s just no secret about a car’s former life. Collector cars often have stories to tell, and perhaps that’s what makes them so interesting. Many cars give you clues, and none are so insightful as the fender tags on muscle Mopars, which detail the options selected by the original owner. You can often see trends and an owner’s taste in the colors he chooses, and most were custom-built with very specific tastes in mind. Others, however, show a single-minded purpose as in the case of this 1968 Road Runner Hemi: no options, just a lightweight body and the biggest, nastiest street motor ever devised and a 4-speed transmission. This one can only be considered a weapon. Don’t believe me? Here’s the fender tag: CAR: Plymouth RoadRunner 2-Door Pillar Coupe ENGINE: 426 cubic inch Hemi 2x4-barrel carburetors TRANSMISSION: 4-Speed Manual Floor Shift TIRES: F70x15 Red Sidewall, nylon belted MODEL YEAR: 1968 BUILD DATE: September 08. AXLE: 3.54/3.55 Rear Axle Ratio, Sure Grip INTERIOR: Deluxe Trim Grade, Vinyl Split Bench Seats. Silver on Black Interior. PAINT: Monotone Red Paint. OTHER: Black Upper Door Frame Color. Black Horizontal Accent Stripe. MOLDINGS: 25: Drip Rail Mouldings ABC OPTIONS: A1: 26in Radiator Coming off a recent rotisserie restoration, this Bright Red Road Runner is a high-profile muscle car that will command respect anywhere it goes. The bodywork is well done with crisp details and excellent panel gaps, and the finished product is much nicer than new. Two-stage urethane paint was used to create a mirror-like shine, accented by a simple black pinstripe and the basic blacked-out hood treatment and subtle Hemi badges. First-year Road Runners received only a simple decal on the leading edges of the doors and deck lid, staying true to their back-to-basics mission of high performance and low cost. Chrome is nicely done, the decals and badges are accurate, and the stainless window trim has been polished. But the restorer was careful not to over-restore this one, because that would defeat the purpose for which it was born: dominate the streets. Basic was the word of the day inside as well, and this Road Runner features the standard black split bench up front, and enough room for three friends in back. Fresh seat covers, new foam, and crisp door panels have been installed, and because basic doesn’t mean shabby, this one is extremely nice. The crisp gauge faces suggest that they’ve been rebuilt, and the 490 miles showing on the odometer are little more than shakedown test miles since it was completed. And although it wasn’t noted on the fender tag, an original Music Master AM radio lives in the dash, complete with those unique roller knobs that are easier to use than you might think. There’s a purposeful look to the shifter sticking out of the transmission tunnel, and as an original 4-speed car, this one has the proper fittings and sheetmetal that are often missing from the clones. This car is no clone, and under the hood lives a date-code correct 426 Hemi that has been fully rebuilt to stock specifications. Restored by a well-regarded Mopar expert, the details are correct throughout, including the Hemi Orange paint on the block that has been wiped clean on the serial number pad for authentication. That big chrome air cleaner wears only a simple, small ‘426 Hemi’ badge (which is really unnecessary anyway, no other engine looks like this), there are factory-style hoses and clamps throughout the engine bay, and the firewall wears a correct ballast resistor. And you can forget performance-stealing accessories like power steering and brakes—this car was built for one thing and one thing only. The 4-speed transmission is also a date-code correct piece driving an indestructible Dana 60 full of 3.54 gears on a Sure Grip limited slip (although I’m sure this one probably had a set of 4.10s or more during combat). The floors are as nicely finished as the body, and it sports correct torque boxes that many Hemi clones don’t have, proof that it’s legit. The heavy-duty suspension that was standard with the Hemi has been rebuilt, and it tracks straight and true on the highway. The manual drum brakes take a pretty good shove to stop the car, but if you’re man enough to handle the Hemi, it won’t matter. The only significant deviation from stock are the Flowmaster mufflers, which quite honestly make the Hemi sound like the full-race piece it really is. The perfect finishing touch are the plain-Jane steel wheels and dog dish hubcaps wearing reproduction Firestone redline bias-ply tires. Look at the workmanship on this car (we have photos of the restoration showing the level of detail that went into it), the pedigree, and the attention to detail throughout—this is a seriously nice car. Yes, it’s basic, but that’s the appeal and this Road Runner makes no apologies. There are no secrets about its past life, and the unabashed dedication to speed above all else makes this the purest sort of Hemi. Never designed to do anything but win, this is exactly the kind of car it was born to power: light and strong with no frills. If that appeals to you, this is the Hemi you’ve been looking for.
