Vehicle Detail

Offered for sale is a 1985 (last year of production) Volvo 244 Turbo. The car spent its' entire life in Alabama and is 98% rust free. I have many, many photos of this car so please email me if you want to see more. This car has approximately 132,XXX miles on it, although the speedometer cable's plastic retaining ring recently broke, so the actual mileage is a few more than that - but not much. This car is silver with a black leather interior. The paint is faded and will need a respray, and there are a few small dings. The worst of it is the driver's side fender, which was dented mildly in a minor fender-bender (literally) which is noted in the vehicle history report you can read for yourself below this description (click the Vehicle History Report link in the vehicle details section above to expand the full report.) That will probably need replacement. Otherwise, the body is in fantastic shape. The spare tire and tool wells (the infamous butt cheeks) are perfect, as are the rockers, frame, and floorboards, with the exception of one small (about the size of a nickel) rust spot on the right rear floorboard. If you are looking for a 240 Turbo to restore, you know how hard it is to find one in this condition. The stock Turbo grille was replaced with a GL grille at some point, and a piece of trim is missing at the rear. The bumpers have a few nicks and should be replaced if you are restoring the car. The exhaust is motly good, but the tailpipe (from the rear muffler out to the world) is rusted / rotted a bit. That part is cheap and not hard to find. The taillights are not in great shape but will pass inspection. The interior suffers from the typical Volvo 240 interior issues; cracked dash, cracked seat leather, cracked door pockets, and faded rear deck. The dash, deck, and door pockets are easy to repair or replace; IPD sells door pockets and reinforcements which I have always found to be excellent, and their dash covers for the 1986 and newer 240 are also high quality. The seats are easy to replace and any 240 sedan seats from any year will work; I personally like having the later model cloth seats installed as they grip your arse better in hard corners. Mechanically this car is very good. It had the alternator, A/C clutch, and belts replaced within 150 miles, and is in good running condition. I do not have this car registered (it still has a clear, clean, unsigned Alabama title waiting for the new owner) so I haven't done too much driving (about 50 miles total, mostly below 40mph), but it starts, idles, stops and shifts very well. I haven't had it up to overdrive speeds yet, but have tested the O/D and it appears to work perfectly. The plastic detent which locks out reverse is out of adjustment, so you can shift into reverse without engaging the collar, but that is a simple fix. The engine idles smoothly and the turbo (new three years ago according to the prior owner) spools up well. The only thing that is less than great about the operating condition of this car is the electrical system. An aftermarket alarm has been installed and susbsequently deactivated, and I suspect this to be the issue. The gauges operate intermittenly, but when operational provide good feedback as to the health of the engine. Overall, a few hours of tracing the wiring faults would do it good. It appears that there is an intermittent ground fault in the instrument panel circuitry. The engine wiring harness, a common failure point on these cars, was recently wrapped wire by wire with heavy duty electrical tape, and does not have any shorts or breaks. A new harness would be needed for show, but the current one is perfectly functional. The car can be driven as-is, but as it has been sitting for some time it would be wise to tow it to its' next home. If need be, I can deliver the car a short distance. This car has all of the options that came on the Turbo model, including power windows and locks, power side mirrors, Virgo 15 inch alloy wheels (center caps are missing, sorry) manual sunroof (works perfectly) A/C (needs a recharge but has new components as indicated earlier) and the full Turbo gauge pack including Turbo-specific primary instrument cluster, boost gauge, voltage meter, oil pressure gauge, and small-diameter clock (the clock face has a small crack, which is very common on these - replacements are cheap and easy to come by). In addition, this car has several rare options, including cruise control (functionality unknown but all components present and accounted for) leather shift lever boot (I give it a 7 out of 10; it is dirty and a bit dry but without major cracks, and the zipper, plastic tabs, and button are in good shape) fog lights (lenses cracked, but with rare Volvo plastic covers) heated driver's seat, and more. I am asking $1000 including extra parts such as a spare instrument cluster, a very nice spare Turbo / GLT steering wheel (the horn contact plate on the original wheel is missing; this wheel is in great shape except for a few nicks on the lower front face) some taillamp pieces, and more. This car is worth more for parts than I am asking for it - it's just too nice to part out. This would be a very easy restoration project for a Volvo enthusiast, or a great candidate to race due to the sound, rust-free structure. It would also, if you do want it for parts only, be a fantastic parts car for your restoration project, due to all of the rare options in good condition and the low-mileage solid drivetrain. I have too many projects and am starting to thin the herd - my loss, your gain. Please email me with any questions. This car is located in Newton Centre, MA 02459. I'm not interested in trades, sorry. I have many other pictures available if anyone wishes to see more, and I welcome inspectrion in person. Please contact me prior to the end of the auction to discuss payment. Thanks for looking, and good luck bidding! On Jun-01-11 at 21:01:13 PDT, seller added the following information:
