Vehicle Detail
1980…………….Ronald Reagan was elected President, Pittsburgh Steelers won the Super Bowl and everyone wanted to know “who shot J.R.” and Pontiac was still riding the Trans Am success wave. Presented here today is perhaps the most widely recognized, envied and copied rendition of the Trans Am. She appears, as she was born, freshly painted in the original black exterior, black interior color palate with gold striping and gold screaming chicken decal on the hood. So this example is pretty much the picture that forms in people’s minds when they think of a Trans Am. This particular style was a 1979 redesign that Pontiac carried through unchanged for this 1980 model year example. Fitted with the 4.9 Liter Pontiac Turbo V8 producing 210 HP, the engine is mated to the bullet proof 3 speed automatic transmission. The car fires up quickly and shifts smoothly all the way to “The Empire Strikes Back” era. The car has factory A/C but is nonfunctioning @ the moment. All the parts appear to be there but she is being sold with the air not operational. The car was owned by a collector with strong mechanically abilities and although the engine bay carries 30 years’ worth of grime and use, don’t mistake that image for believing she isn’t mechanically good to go. She is indeed fully sorted and ready to travel. All the gauges, including the clock, are in working order. The car was fitted with a modern radio with a I Pod accessory plug and is likewise, 100% functional. The traditional honeycomb wheels are surrounded by Goodyear Eagle GT II 225 tires with strong tread life still apparent. The 40,478 miles showing on the odometer are not the actual miles as they are in excess of the 1980 5 digits capacity limits. The car benefited from a partial cosmetic restoration two years ago and has travelled less than 500 miles since. The interior is a mix of new and nicely detailed original pieces. The seat covers along with the carpeting were replaced and the cabin is in very good to excellent condition. The exterior boasts the factory T Tops, (we have the original factory leather covers), and the glass does have the customary surface scratches that accumulate over the years. The car was stripped down to the bare metal and repainted and then decaled and detailed as you see her. The application of the paint was done by the owner/enthusiast and whilst it shines beautifully it falls below a professional application. Some runs in the paint or, more likely, the clear coat are visible and there is some areas of spotting in the paint. A cut and polish service to the car would add nicely to the T/A. We always welcome first hand buyer or buyer’s agent inspections to examine any of our offerings. We recommend these inspections to provide the buyer’s confidence in all transactions with Masterpiece. The original Owner’s Manual and the Build Sheet will all travel with the car and no doubt be kept for an additional 30 years. We all know these Pontiacs are one of the few collector cars presently trending upward in price and @ the price on offer here represents a solid long-term value.
